Shane Wallace has made a decent life for himself in Last Chance. He built his own home on his mom’s property to take care of her, owns an automotive repair shop, and when he wants to get laid, Portland isn’t too far away. Not too shabby for the boy who spent his childhood getting bullied and feeling alone. Shane’s content to leave his past behind him…until one of his childhood tormentors comes … comes back to town.
Maxwell Sullivan never planned to step foot in Last Chance again. Here, he was Maxwell, a teen who suffered in silence while everyone thought he had the perfect life. Now, he’s “Van,” the erotic artist and photographer. He’s only here to help his mom tie up some loose ends after his father’s death and to apologize to Shane. After that, he’s heading back to LA for good.
Shane never thought he’d have anything in common with Maxwell, but there’s a depth to Van that surprises him. Van knows what it feels like to be alone. He sees Shane in ways no one else does. There’s a shared connection neither can deny. Somehow, despite their rocky history, they get each other.
It’s not long before the two are so drawn to each other that they tumble into bed—sometimes with Van’s camera involved. Their chemistry in and out of the bedroom is undeniable. Except nothing is ever black and white. Shane can’t leave his mom and Van’s life is in LA. With two different lives pulling them in opposite directions, their picture-perfect ending might not be in the cards.

I liked this book for it’s ups and downs….
Bring a box of tissues and your heart
I can honestly say this storyline caught me off guard. I wasn’t prepared for the emotions that it had me feeling. The title is perfect for this work. The story itself was so enthralling and had that aspect of ‘don’t turn your head or you will miss something’ feeling to it. When you read the book, you’ll understand that sentence. And you MUST read this book. It is so worth your time.
One of the main characters that is so richly described from page one is Shane. He is worth knowing just for his character—as in, what makes him who he is. The next man we meet is Van. He, too, is someone that I enjoyed getting to know. Not only for his character but entirely different reasons as well.
The supporting characters in the story are all intertwined beautifully. And that makes the book full, and it flourishes in its richness. Besides the heat, the feels, and the heart, this author leaves no emotion untouched. That is what makes a good read, in my opinion.
My only regret is that I can not give this book a 9-star rating.
This cover is beyond HOT! and matches the story within…Sooo good!
What happens when you remove the background noise and only concentrate on the now? Using part of the title as a springboard: this book had more depth than I expected. I was unaware that “depth of field” referred to a photographic technique where you make the background fuzzy and make the foreground more pronounced. Much like this book did.
Maxwell and Shane live in a small town, Last Chance where Max comes from a prominent family and Shane lives with his emotionally afflicted mother after his father left them. Max is also a bully and loves picking on Shane. But the full story is much darker. Max leaves for LA at 18 years old hoping to never return.
Twelve years later Max, now Van comes back to Last Chance, his father died and he’s helping his mother clear out the house. He meets Shane who has come into his own and he’s HOT, if you’re into men, which both Van and Shane are…hmmm. The mothers of both men play an important part in this story, being such opposites. You’ll see. Find out how these men have become more than expected.
If you like explicit but eventually loving M/M, angst and fully developed characters with whom you can empathize, you must read this book. I loved it!!! I know this book will stick with me for a while. It was funny, sad and completely spell-binding.
Shane and Van with their hurtful past was a beautiful story to watch unfold. Shane really was a selfless person to be the sole caregiver of his mom plus his forgiving nature toward Van. I love how they fell in love and how their story ended.
H-O-L-Y-S-H-I-T! This book deserves so much more than 5 stars! Riley Hart You’ve outdone yourself this time!
I love everything Riley writes, but this book took it to a completely different level of LOVE!! I cannot agree more with my GR friends, that this right here is her best work to date!!!
My heart broke for them both, so much shit they’ve been through, but can still come out on the other side with their heads held high. This book has a bit of it all, pain, jokes, confusion, cuteness, strength and we can’t forget the sex, it was soooo HOT. Like walking on the sun, HOOOOT!!!
If I were to recommend a book to anyone, it would definitely be this one.. Straight to my top 10 of 2017
Depth of Field, is my first book by this author. It’s a adorable story, about Shane and Van’s incredible chemistry. And the bedroom activities are hot AF!!
“Don’t let other people steal your joy. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s not to let other people take what you love. Hold onto that shit.”
The story had some inconsistencies that threw me out of the story, but other than that, I had a goofy smile on almost the entire time reading it!
“People put too much stock into the right time. There’s no right time for anything. “
A rating…gorgeous story. Definitely recommend.
I am a huge Riley Hart fan – if you love M/M romance, you will love this!
Excellent! Riley Hart is one of my favorite offers and once again does not disappoint.
Loved this book
A page turner!
Great fun read!
Maxwell lives life to please his parents until he graduates from high school and disappears. Shane is tied to a town he can’t leave…taking care of his mom. When Maxwell returns after the death of his father, at his mother’s request, conversations lead to confessions years in the making.
This a beautifully written book that will remind you to open your years and the importance of forgiveness, second chances and the need to trust.
