This was my first experience reading Judith Lucci and it surely won’t be my last. I have always been partial to Medical Thrillers and C/M/T, and so I started this book thinking it was a medical thriller like a Robin Cook novel. I was wrong.
Here we have Alex Destephano in VA, working in DC, with her fiance Jake in the Middle East tracking down a terrorist leader. Both plotlines unfold independently but are clearly intertwined as Alex and Jake are always checking in as they can. Suddenly, Alex is drawn back to Louisiana to help with the investigation of a series of suspicious hospital murders and Jake undergoes his own challenging mission to take out Faisal Muhammed, a major figure in global terrorism. Any brief synopsis I give here doesn’t do the book justice as it does not convey the suspense and how masterfully the reader is drawn into the stories.
No spoilers here, you have to read the book. It’s a perfect book for a quarantine day or two. If I had one nit to pick it would be that I felt that the two storylines ended unevenly. The conclusion of Jake’s operation in the Middle East ended well, with a nice surprise element that brought it to a conclusion. I can’t say the same for the medical thriller line and the resolution of the sequence deaths in New Orleans. I was looking for more in terms of medical and clinical analysis once Alex was brought in. I felt the killer was too easily identified and it brought the storyline to an abrupt conclusion.
Yet, a wonderful, entertaining book that I can highly recommend. I am grateful to the author and the publisher for the ARC which introduced me to the series. I have voluntarily left this review in which I sincerely recommend the work.
Demons Among Us is the 7th book in the Alexandra Destephano Medical Thriller Series by Judith Lucci. Each of the books are meant to be read as a standalone, but together, they pack a mean punch!
Alex Destephano balances her career in Washington with her family life in Virginia. But one night, an unexpected snowstorm catches her with her Grandfather and their driver far from home and on dangerous icy roads. At the same time on the other side of the world, her fiancé Jacob is fighting a different fight, but one even more dangerous as he waits tensely for the chance to put the leader of Isis in his sights. An ultra trained sniper, Jacob has waited for his team to have the chance to get close enough to capture Faisal Muhammed. Now, in a matter of moments, they’re only a breath away from success. Meanwhile, in New Orleans, someone is on the hunt for victims who don’t deserve to live, in his opinion. A simple procedure that nobody notices and one less leech to drain the public coffers. After all, why should we all have to pay for the likes of them to live?
I love these kinds of books, with different plots going on, separate from each other but linked together. The suspense builds and it’s nearly impossible to put the book down, no matter how late it is! Well done!
WOW! Judith Lucci has done it again! Alex is now living in Virginia with her young son and grandparents, and working for HHS in Washington. Her fiancé Jeff has just left on a mission to the Middle East when she goes to New Orleans to investigate a series of mysterious deaths at the hospital she used to work for. Judith Lucci has masterfully woven together characters from the Alexandra Destephano series with characters from the Dr Sonia Amon Medical Thrillers to create a very exciting story. With danger surrounding all of the characters, this book will keep you up all night just to find out what happens!
This book links the Alexandra Destaphano series with the Dr Sonia Amon series. Alex now works in DC as a medical analyst studying suspicious deaths and she is drawn back to her old hospital in New Orleans by these investigations as it is one of the locations of suspicious deaths. Her fiance Jacob is in the Middle East on a mission to capture Dr Amon’s father Faisal Muhammed, one of the world’s most feared terrorists. The chapters alternate back and forth between Alex and Jacob, combining medical mystery with anti-terrorism. It was a riveting book that kept me on the edge of my seat. I have read all the Dr Sonia Amon series but I have not read all the Alexandra Destephano series. I need to catch up so I can then move forward with her in what I hope will be more upcoming books. I love Judith Lucci’s style of writing and her wonderful characters that make me feel like I know them. Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an ARC of this book.
A number of deaths in hospitals that were not expected. They all have medication in their systems that was not ordered or charted. Alex is sent to New Orleans to investigate the most recent deaths while her fiance is in the middle east on a mission to capture Faisal of ISIS. This novel will give you two thriller stories and keep you wanting to continue reading.
This was a whirlwind of a book to read, in a good way 🙂 As a reader, you hop from Washington DC, to Syria, to the family farm in Virginia, and down to New Orleans.
This is the first Alexandra Destephano book I’ve read. I was pulled in the first few chapters during the snowstorm and seeing the characters’ relationships with one another. Though I hadn’t any prior knowledge of them, I immediately cared for Alex and her grandfather on that trek back to Virginia from DC. I was worried for Kathryn and Mary at the farm when Belle appears, and I knew there wasn’t anything good going to come of Jacob and Digger being sent to Syria on a mission.
I enjoyed the pacing of the book and how it switches settings and point of view. I also really enjoyed the characters and their interactions with one another. Without giving too much away, if I had a criticism, it’d be that I wish I knew more about the background of the killer and his motive. We don’t get a scene with the killer talking to anyone after being caught, which might’ve added that resolution for me as to “But, why?”
I look forward to reading the previous six Alexandra Destephano books and learning more about these lovely characters.
