On a scale of one to dead, Stephanie’s accidental date with the mysterious, uber-sexy god of Death, Theo, ends at a six–as in ‘feet under.’ But, he’s not ready to give her up. When he plots to rip apart The Underworld, Stephanie becomes the pantheon’s last hope at thwarting Theo’s downward spiral and saving creation, possibly earning herself a slice of goddess-hood in the process. There’s just … slice of goddess-hood in the process.
There’s just two little problems.
One, she’s a ghost.
And two, the well-known deity standing in the way of her happily-immortal-after has a reputation for being a tad . . . possessive.
Throw in sizzling chemistry, near-miss accidents, soul-changing travel, a magical gown, plus a wine bar full of secrets, and you’ve got a paranormal romance unlike anything you’ve ever read.

My goodness, what a fun and original story! I enjoy paranormal romance, but this was like none that I have read. I feel like I barely know what to say about it because it is just such a unique read that has to be read to be fully appreciated. The book is told in the alternating viewpoints of the hero and heroine; he is Death, and she is one of his soul calls. He escorts souls to the afterlife when people die. The heroine is zany and quite amusing; the hero, as you might imagine, is a bit more serious. His “life” has been lonely and quite humdrum, and he is very intrigued by her. They actually do have chemistry that sizzles off the page. The story takes some surprising twists and turns. The book is very humorous in places. I enjoyed the way that the contemporary world and the world of Greek mythology interplayed in the story, and I am definitely looking forward to the next book of the series. I hope the author can surprise me with the next installment as well.
Let me just start by saying this, I don’t tend to read PNR. I’ve only read a few but this one is amazing. I fell in love with Theo right away. Throw Steph into the mix and I couldn’t put it down! Tk did an amazing job at pulling me into the story and never letting me go. I’m definitely looking forward to reading Hades book next!
Death On Line One is a unique paranormal romance. Why unique? So many PNR’s I come across are centered on vampires, werewolves, shifters… you get my drift, you know what’s out there. And those are all PNR’s that I love, but I truly adore nothing more than a totally new take and that is what Death On Line One offers as a story inspired by Greek mythology.
Full disclaimer, I adore mythology. It is seriously an obsession of mine so I was beyond excited to read Death On Line One and Ms. Barber delivered in spades… even though we start with Steph who has nothing at all to do with mythology. She is just your basic girl with a complicated relationship with her mother (who doesn’t have that?) and a successful matchmaking service… despite the fact she herself may be considering the crazy cat lady lifestyle.
Until her phone rings.
She assumes the sexy voice on the other end is yet another set-up courtesy of her former starlet mother. Especially once he tells her that he is Death.
Wait… WHAT?
Yes, folks, Death (aka Theo) was calling and he wanted a date. Before you judge, let’s be honest, we’ve all had worse offers.
Their whirlwind—because time waits for no man, not even a Greek primordial—romance culminates in Steph’s demise, the real reason Death was calling her. But the love they found has offered a light. If Steph is willing, she can try to overcome three trials to find a happily ever after with Theo. One that will never end.
But she has to weigh that heavily in her own mind. Are the emotions following their one night together worth the heavy toll the trials will take on her? Can she trust in what she has found with Theo enough to withstand whatever is thrown at her?
That, my friends, you will need to read to find out for yourself.

This is such a fun book and an awesome twist on Greek mythology (mostly Orpheus and Eurydice with a few twists). The world building, the modern/the PNR is seamless and fun, the humor is cute and on-point and the chemistry between Theo and Steph is super swoony. These are characters you massively want to root for to find an HEA even if that means overcome fate and death and has plenty of awesome side characters who will have you clamoring to get more stories. This book was such a pleasure to read and I can’t wait for more.
I can’t get over how wonderfully unique this story was. In a way, it’s kind of a retelling… but only if you really, really stretch your imagination. Ms. Barber uses characters and ideas from mythology, but she twists and turns them into her own very, VERY enticing tale. I was floored by how innovative and delightful this read was. As a debut novel, this one knocks it outta the park for me. I can’t wait to see what else Ms. Barber’s got in store for us!
Holy guacamole, y’all. You wanna talk smashing debut? Look no further than Death on Line One by T.K. Barber. This book positively blew my readerly hair off, and in the best possible way. Not only is the title clever and on the nose in a delightfully unique way, but the story itself follows suit.
Barber has a way with words that’ll leave you yearning for more. And her skill with world-building—and playing off already established ideas in unique and wonderful ways—will leave you clamoring for the next in this contemporary mythology-inspired series. Plus, her characters are relatable and dreamy, and the supporting cast she’s created is to die for… no pun intended.
I had so much fun with this read. Although the characters are inspired by mythological beings, the contemporary setting and fun modern twists are a total treat. Barber found some truly fantastical ways to use the present time to frame fabled lore. And some of the dialogue had me positively in stitches.
I would recommend this book whole-heartedly to anyone who loves romance, but certainly to anyone with a penchant for the paranormal. Barber’s twist on old favorites and skilled use of tropes will leave you breathless.
T.K. Barber weaves a wonder of voice and character that will keep your heart pounding with laughter and suspense. Theo is EVERYTHING! You will fall for him in an instant, then over and over again. Who knew Death could leave you always wanting for more?
I could not put down this book. So much swooning with the perfect mix of action and heartache in this epic twist on Greek mythology. Stephanie is a sassy leading lady who is independent, smart, and over twenty-five! She has flaws but grows through them throughout the book. I will not spoil anything. Nope. You have to read. Theo is a God. Hot, flawed and will do whatever it takes to save Stephanie. Their love is to die for. 😉 The supporting cast adds to this character-driven story. Each has a completely different personality that enriches the plot. I am so excited that this is the first book in the series because-these supporting characters…HOT. This author knows how to write. Her unique style will grab all your feelings, ALL OF THEM, and leave you impatiently waiting for the next book!
An engaging read from the first line. Death On Line One is a fast pace, witty, exciting read that left me wanting more. The author has created characters that I want to hang out with. The plot moved along with no dead spots, always keeping me interested in what was happening. A wonderful debut novel from an exciting new voice in fiction. Death On Line One is a great read for anyone who enjoys romance, mythology, fantasy, or any combination of those genres. I can’t wait for the next installment.
