Daywalker Brynne Kirkland survived a hellish upbringing as a product of a madman’s lab. Tough, driven, and devoted to her work in law enforcement, Brynne has never dared to risk opening her heart to anyone–least of all a handsome immortal from a world on the verge of war against hers.Atlantean warrior Zael left the intrigue of his realm several lifetimes ago, along with the battles he fought as … fought as one of the queen’s legion. As a free-spirited loner walking the fringe of two worlds–that of his secretive and powerful people, and the outside world belonging to mankind and the Breed–it was never his intention to return to combat and bloodshed. Nor had he imagined that he might ever be tempted into anything stronger than desire . . . until he meets Brynne.
Thrust together as allies of the Order in the fight against a diabolical enemy, Zael and Brynne embark on a mission that will ultimately force them to decide between duty to their people, and a passion that defies all bounds.

3 stars – I liked it
Daywalker Brynne Kirkland survived her hellish upbringing with Dragos and now refuses to trust her heart with anyone. But the handsome Atlantean Zael won’t let her hide anymore.
This book finally dives deeper into the Atanteans and what they can do. It was fascinating getting to learn more about their abilities, especially when paired with the crystal. Zael has been a playboy from his introduction but we actually get to see the man hidden underneath finally. I enjoyed Zael, especially since he was dedicated to keeping his people safe from Selene.
Brynne was a difficult heroine for me. She was always so determined to keep people away constantly that I found myself bored with her character for a while. I did like her more towards the end of the book once her secret came out. I enjoyed Zael and Brynne together but felt their relationship was slightly rushed at the end of the book.
Overall, I enjoyed the progression of the story with the Atlanteans. Zael and Brynne were an ok couple but were not my favorite, nor were they very memorable.
After the strong roles they played in the previous book, Bound to Darkness, and seeing the sparks between them, I was glad the mysterious Atlantean, Zael, and loner breed female, Brynn, got their story. Each installment of the serious is an easy, pleasure for my Midnight Breed-loving heart.
Defy the Dawn is the fourteenth installment of a series that doesn’t work well standalone as the overall story path continues from what came before it.
The Order of Breed vampires face danger from two sides in their work to protect humans and their own people. Opus Nostrum is a hidden terrorist organization attacking the Order and other peace-seeking organization. Their agenda is still hidden, but their methods are insidious and lethal. But more scary are the secret race of Atlanteans led by revenge-seeking Queen Selene.
I loved the action-packed excitement of these series when the battles are never easy for the Breed. But the romances are just as exciting. This book splits time between some battle scenes between the Order and Opus and between the romance. I enjoyed the story, but also felt a little detached. I think it was the push and pull in the romance as well as the feeling that the story felt like two halves that didn’t mesh as well as they could have. Lucas and the rest of the Order are fighting Opus and then it flips to Brynne’s secrets and the romance. And then the romance pair has their own isolated adventure for the last section. Not bad things, but just felt disjointed to me so I felt a bit distant.
The romance doesn’t involve members of the Order or the newer generation which had me curious about the pair. This one involves a breed female who came from the group experimented on by Dragos and discovers she is sister to Tavia, a heroine, from earlier in the series. Brynne’s had a rough row to hoe and holds everyone at arm’s length ignoring all overtures from Tavia and her friends to get close because of her fear that they will reject her because of her big monstrous secret. She tries to push Kael away and even says and does some ornery stuff to do it. She knows where to jab because she has more interest and attraction in him than she wants to admit. Kael is Atlantean, but he rebelled and left when he saw Selene doing things that were wrong. He defended his friend Cass and protected his daughter, Jordana, and now has the work of building a relationship with his own newly discovered daughter, Dylan. He’s fascinated by the prickly Brynne who he knows is attracted to him and hiding something big. I loved how he didn’t put up with her issues and worked to prove that he didn’t care once he knew her ‘dreadful’ secret. He accepted her no matter what, but it ends up being Brynne’s great fear that does the worst damage to her happiness.
Things are left in an ominous place as always- though no cliffhangers- and leaves me excited to see what is coming next for the vampires of the Order. This is a wonderful long-lasting paranormal romance series and I can heartily recommend it to other PNR lovers.
Ekizael, or Zael to his few friends and allies, has a tentative alliance with the Breed. His own people are now threatening not only the Breed but also the humans. Once again Atlantis’ queen has grown too big for her boots and now Zael must find a way to combat her plans.
He may be able to conjure nifty light in his hands and zap himself from place to place but when he meets Brynne, he feels something new and downright frightening – love!
Brynne is Breed but she was also experimented on and she feels like a monster. She has now connected with her half-sister but she still feels as though she must hide her true nature – she’s been run out of town if they found out her true nature!
Zael is intrigued by Brynne from the initial meeting and even follows her back to London – just in time to help when JUSTIS is attacked.
I did find it a bit hard to navigate as even though I loved meeting the original Breed and their mates and children, I did feel that Zael and Brynne sometimes got lost in the shuffle. Still a good story just lacked the emphasis on the leads I felt.
One of the best series I own
A great addition to the Midnight Breed series. I enjoyed the read and I really loved Zael, but unfortunately, Brynn didn’t really endear herself to me. However, still a great read!
As with all of this author’s books, wonderful read. Some books are better than others but all easy, entertaining reads.
I loved this book would recommend
Great read! I love this author
Lara Adrian could write a grocery list and I’d read it!
I always enjoy the books in this series.
They are exciting, entertaining, and never boring. I always enjoy the story lines and become involved with the characters as well. as well.
Great series.
I enjoyed the Two main characters. Because of who and what they are it gives the Breed Society more options to beat their enemies in future books in this series.
It was a decent read but not memorable.
Absolutely love the his entire series, and this book continues the high level & attention to detail this prolific writer consistently shows!
Great writing w wonderful characters. Her best book of all the ones I’ve read.
