I am both a sinner and a saint, but I bleed vengeance. For years, I’ve lived in the grey… until her.Avery Washington didn’t belong in the shadows, but I dragged her into the darkness anyway. One kiss, and I would stop at nothing to possess her.One caress, and my need to destroy wavered. Our attraction was poison and pleasure. They say the devil recognizes his own, but I never saw Avery coming. She’s … say the devil recognizes his own, but I never saw Avery coming.
She’s determined to light the matchsticks, and I can’t resist going down in flames…
Defied is the final book in the Blood Duet and should not be read before Sworn.

Wow, this book had me saying, omg, wait…what the hell and just had me all around shocked…which is saying something. This was a real page turner, I couldn’t and didn’t want to put this book down. Lincoln aka Captain America aka Thor aka Mr. Hot Cop is a real badass, I mean like The Badass of all badass’s. If I was in trouble, I would definitely pick him to have my back, the whole hot cop thing is just an added bonus. There was a scene in the book where he storms in, kisses the breath out of Avery, gains a male fan that developed a little man crush on him. “I want to be you when I grow up. Seriously, man-crush status over here.”. This was one of the funniest scenes I have ever read, and yeah Lincoln’s just like that. Love me some Lincoln, double dibs, all mine. The heat between he and Avery is seriously intense.
This book was full of crazy ass surprises, one after the other. And nobody is ever who or what they seem. It was a safe read, which I appreciated, Avery and Lincoln only had eyes for each other and so much heat. A shit ton of drama and suspense. No om or ow drama. So many questions but an equal amount of answers. No epilogue per say, but we do get a glimpse of them in the future and the things they’ve accomplished and where they are at. This was not the traditional love story, but it was just as effective and I absolutely floved it. Maria Luis is a great writer, one of my favorites, but she really outdid herself with this duet….congratulations.
I Was so looking forward to diving into the second book in the Blood Duet series and Defied (Blood Duet #2) certainly didn’t disappoint; this started exactly where we left off in Sworn and almost immediately we are thrown right back into the thick of things.
“Defied” was action packed throughout and I so enjoyed reconnecting with both Avery and Lincoln.
In this second volume, we finally get the answers we have been waiting for and I felt that we finally got to fully bond and empathise much more with both Avery and Lincoln.
Finally comprehending the reasonings behind there outward personas and life choices.
In return, this made me feel so much more connected to our leading couple; I was so invested in the final outcome for these two.
This was really easy to get lost in and “Defied” managed to absorb me fully almost from the beginning.
Its told in dual POV and also has some interesting and also some very unsavoury individuals.
In Defied I was sucked right into the colourful ambience of what was ultimately the dark belly of New Orleans.
I adored the dynamic between Avery and Lincoln very much and thought that together they made a fantastic pair.
Their broken pieces just fit together so beautifully and when these two stopped fighting there feelings the outcome for both was fantastic and addictive reading.
This also had just the right balance of action versus sexy times and the emotion here was incredibly believable; I actually wanted these two to pull through the shitstorm ahead.
And most important of all they were both so very likeable; totally the cherry here for me.
“Defied” at its heart was well written and a truly positive experience for me.
Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC of “Defied (Blood Duet #2)” of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Defied starts right where Sworn left off at that cliffhanger that left us gasping and needing more. OMG! Maria Luis knocked us flat out as Lincoln and Avery completely blew this story out of the water in the conclusion to this duet. This story was absolutely amazing and left me glued to my seat. A 5 hr flight never flew by so fast in my life!
I don’t even know where to begin! I loved this story and the drama and the connection between Lincoln and Avery. This story was full of suspense and secrets and had so many revelations that my head was spinning. While I will admit there were times I was confused trying to keep the names and secrets straight I was completely consumed and addicted from the get go. Without giving away any spoilers, Lincoln and Avery are now dealing with the repercussions at the end of Sworn. But now when their pasts collide will they be able to work side by side or will they be dragged down into the dark path they both have fought so long to escape?
Gah!!! This story was FANTASTIC!!! I love how the author was able to highlight the fact that amidst the hopelessness and despair Lincoln and Avery lived in, they both felt that happiness and love was within their reach with each other. Particularly, Lincoln made Avery feel like she wanted more out of life than hiding in the shadows and likewise, Avery became the reason that Lincoln wanted to leave the realm of darkness and depravity that he has lived in his whole life. AAAh!! EVERYONE needs to read this duet!! I seriously am so addicted to this author’s words and I can not wait for more!! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula
OMG where do I start with this review. I love Ms. Luis’s pasts works and to say she has hit a homerun with this duet would not be doing it justice. Perhaps saying she has stretched her writing to a new height might be a description. My only problem is I have no idea where to begin without giving away to much. So let me start by simply saying buy the Blood Duet, you will not be sorry.
We left off in book 1 (Sworn) with a complete OMG Cliffe moment (which I won’t spoil here). Things will come to light that will have Jack and Avery fighting for their lives along with their own personal demons. The twists and turns in this thrilling duet will have you guessing and on the edge of your seat at every turn. Who can they trust, can they even trust each other, is anyone who we actually think they are? You will find yourself drawn into life in the shadows and underworld of New Orleans as you experience the shady dealings of the towns politicians and everyone Avery and/or Jack have ever known. Your heart will break and soar and break again as you follow these two broken souls who have fought to survive since they were teens. Two people who would give up everything just to belong and know what it’s like to be loved.
I can’t recommend reading and following Jack and Avery’s life stories enough. The highs, the lows, the thrills, the chilling, the suspense and even the romantic and humorous moments will keep you turning page after page and contemplating its ending. KUDOS Ms. Luis for an amazing duet. It’s definitely been one of my favorites for 2018. 2 Thumbs Up.
