After months of silence, here she stands on my front porch, waiting to be let in again. But it’s the same play every time, and I know how this ends – I give her all I have and she carries it with her on the way back to him.I should turn her away, but I won’t. Couldn’t do it if I tried.Because no matter how many times she pops back up, pulls me in and drags me under, it will never be enough. I’ll … never be enough. I’ll always want more.
More of her.
More for us.
And she’ll always choose him.

Meagan Brandy is a straight up savage!!!
SAVAGE, I tell you!
She decimated my heart and did an evil cackle while she threw me in a pit of starving pigs that ripped my body to shreds.
(Okay that was graphic but seriously…)
This book is the reason the word ANGST exists. I mean how many times can she put our poor hearts in a vice, slice them open, and leave them bleeding out before we die?!?!
Apparently, as many as she wants! Defenseless Hearts is thoroughly devastating. Its heart breaking, mind numbingly tragic. It’s starrcrossed lovers making Romeo and Juliet look like a fairytale. To clarify, it makes them look like a Disney fairytale. Defenseless Hearts is more Grimm in its heartache. But dont let my ranting scream you off, because it’s worth every heartbreaking, soul crushing minute.
Everyone needs a Hero. And Hero deserves HER.
4.5 beautiful
First off I would like to start by saying that if you haven’t read Fumbled Hearts (Tender Hearts #1) you should definitely start by reading it first. Although it is not necessary because the story is about different characters, I feel like there is too much history between all of them and not reading it makes a few things harder to understand.
BUT that being said….
What a beautiful love story.
I absolutely love Parker. His love, his passion, his perseverance for the heroine made my heart ache and swell at the same time. She on the other hand bugged me a little bit throughout the story, but in the end I came to understand why she was reacting the way she did.
Meagan did an amazing job portraying the characters emotions. The pain, the love, the hate, the happiness, you can definitely find it all wrapped up into one perfect love story. AND my favorite part of it all: the friendship.
A must read
My hearts defenses totally went down the drain!
Can I just say that Meagan Brandy totally freaking know how to rip and tear at your heart until there is nothing left. Like why does she keep doing this to me. Buuuutt, and it’s a big BUT, she also puts it back together a little differently, and a little more perfect than before.
It took me such a long time to read this book. NOT due to it being bad, because its phenomenal. But due to my heart not being able to handle it. Parker, I love him, I wanted his HEA and while he gets it; there were times I absolutely just couldnt deal and had to set it aside. This story seriously broke my little heart then put it back together. The strenght, the loyalty, the love, the self sacrifice are freaking everything and more with Defenseless Hearts.
Everyone needs to read it and read it now!!
Before I even try to form complete sentences to express my love for Defenseless Hearts, if you haven’t read Fumbled Hearts:
1. What the ever loving Fuck is wrong with you
2. Drop what you are reading and get to reading it, because you need to prepare yourself for Parker “Hero” Baylor
5 stars is just not enough. This book was a perfect combination of everything that will may you have all the feels. There is truly no real words that I feel can express how this book grabbed me from the very beginning. I wanted Parker’s story after I read Fumbled Hearts and Meagan Brandy gave so much more that I ever expected. Now with that being said let me see if I can give this masterpiece a review that will do it justice.
Just like Brandy’s first book I gave me characters that I loved like Parker, Nate Lollie, Kenra for starters. Then there are those characters that I just could push off a cliff into piranha infested waters, like Liv and Killian.
Parker is that guy that is the hero for everyone in his life. He didn’t have an easy childhood and when he’s finally able to breakaway he’s finally able to live. But, there is that one somebody that he wishes would be there with him. The one girl that has owned his heart.
Kenra feels that she’s trapped, and there is no way for her to find away out. For her she’s living the way she needs to protect everyone that she loves. But, there is still hope for her.
This book is definitely one that is on the top of my favorites for the year. And I can’t wait to see if we will be honored with getting another couples story (big hint hint for Brandy, I now want Ari’s and Chases story). I only with that I could read this one for the first time again.
This book! I had already loved Parker as a character from Fumbled Hearts and was pulling for him to end up with Kenra. Meagan made their journey one to remember. I wanted to help Parker fight for her, strangle Kellan and shake Kenra to fix it all! Not only did I fall in love with them, but the rest of the “cast” I can’t wait to read the next of the series and inevitably fall more in wok with her writing!
THIS BOOK WRECKED ME. And I mean wrecked me. I started crying and tearing up from Chapter 3 until the very freaking end. Meagan pulls zero punches with this one, literally shredding your soul apart page by page until there’s nothing left. I was a pile of unruly emotions and so many tears by the end of this book I didn’t think I was going to survive it. This story is not an easy read, it will wrap around your heart and squeeze until you can’t breathe, aching from the inside, leaving you with this heavy pressure that just sits on your chest until the very last page. Dang you Meagan for legit destroying me with this book.
Parker and Kenra are both so self-sacrificing. In a heartbeat they will choose other peoples happiness over their own which leaves them in this never ending cycle of pain and heartache that doesn’t seem to have an end in sight. I don’t know how many times I had to stop reading and take a breath because these two just kept breaking me down. Their love and compassion for not only each other but their loved ones elevates them onto a whole new plain. Watching them struggle with their feelings and everything that was set up to destroy them was hard to read at times. But trust that Meagan knows what she’s doing and she slowly pulls them up from the trenches, she lets them see how strong they really are.
Meagan took me for a deeply moving and soul searing journey with Parker and Kenra. I don’t think there is any way to really prepare for what happens in this book. But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. This story reached inside me and tore through each and every possible emotion I had leaving me a mess of feelings that I didn’t know how to sort through. I loved Parker and Kenra but their journey really wore me out with how much I was feeling while reading it. If you are looking for a book that will have you feeling all the things, than this is that book for you. But prepare yourself it’s not an easy book and you will definitely want to scream and rage, but at the end you’ll see that it was all for something, it was for love.
This was a fantastic story! Filled with emotional turmoil, suspense, love, laughter, EVERYTHING!! i loved how Parker had an undying love for Kenra and how the story shows that Kenra has an undying love for Parker as well. The emotional trauma these two went through to get to their forver love was inspiring and I thorougly enjoyed it!
It was like a nice family hug to be back in this little world. I’ve missed this family a lot and t his is the the embodiment of both angst and swoon. I don’t want to sound dramatic but I would unalive myself for Parker Baylor. There were obviously moments of great frustration and there was certain characters I would happily see run off the road, but for the most part all of these characters are precious, especially Lolli. She is who I wanna be when I grow up. I trust this author with a lot and she hasn’t done me wrong yet. But can we have more in this world? Please?
“I wish I could erase her fears and soak up all her pain. I’d drown in hurt if it meant she felt none.”
I absolutely loved Parker in Fumbled Hearts but I LOVED him in Defenseless Hearts. We see more about him and his friendship with Kenra, how that all started, how he’d do absolutely anything for her, and even though she keeps turning him away, he’ll never stop fighting for her. He puts his heart on the line for Kenra over and over again. He is soo swoony with his words, actions, just his overall presence!!! His friendship with Kalani is still strong and I loved seeing her and Nate in this book, along with some other characters, new and old.
I liked Kenra’s character. She seems to come off as weak, like she can’t stand up for herself, but when you get to know her and everything she’s been going through, we find out that she’s incredibly strong and doing all the protecting. Sacrificing herself, her happiness, for her loved ones around her. Her pull to Parker is undeniable, and she can’t seem to stay away from him, even though she knows she should, given her situation.
I loved all the interactions that Kenra and Parker had together, in the present and in the flashbacks. The tears were real in this one you guys. Oh my gosh, my heart! I won’t talk about it, because it’s a spoiler, but I did not see that coming and just… my heart hurts.
This book was beautiful and heartbreaking but I promise it has a happy ending. Parker is definitely a guy you want as your next book boyfriend. He loves hard and at times I thought his love interest Kendra
didn’t deserve him. However, she has many dark scars herself and she truly needs a hero.
Also if you love Lollipop and Nate (I do so much), from “Fumbled Heart” the first book in this series. They are in this book a lot. I loved that about this book so much, because, Lolli & Parker’s relationship is super special. Promise this is a heart read.
This book pulls on every heartstring. The journey Parker goes through to end up with his soul mate will make you cry and smile.
How in the world is it that every book I read by Meagan Brandy is amazing?
This book did not disappoint. I loved the character building that was in it, along with to follow-up with other characters from the previous. Just like all the other characters she’s created, these ones did NOT disappoint.
How can you continue guessing at what’s going to happen in books? If you are looking for an author that is amazing at writing, sucking you in, and leaving you with angst that just demolished you while leaving you whole……..Here’s your book!
This book was a little hard for me to get through. It wasn’t bad in any way. In fact the story was very good. I think the problem was Parker. He went through hell in this book and he is my favorite! It was so worth it in the end.
Meagan Brandy knows how to stir all your emotions, turn you upside down and inside out. Parker is loyal to his friends and family, loves hard whether it is his best friend Lolli or the girl that has his heart. Its not all sunshine and rainbows, no no no this book had parts that were frustrating, heartbreaking hard to read but not to be put off you will cry, laugh, and scream your way through it. Talk about a heartbreaking angsty read that’s not to be missed
“She might be his as far as labels go, but I live inside her, just like she does me.” – Parker Baylor
Parker Baylor has been in love with Kenra Monroe since he was a freshman in high school. The first time they met, they were drawn to each other. However that same day, somebody else showed an interest in Kenra. As the years went on, their secret friendship and stolen moments were all they had. After all, she belonged to someone else, and Kenra never could quite find the courage to leave. Alrick Falls is a small town, one that Parker has wanted to leave once he finished high school. His best friend Kalani gave him the opportunity to leave and he took it. When Kenra shows back up, Parker wants to turn her away, but he can’t, after all she is his kryptonite. Can the two figure out how to make this work between them, or will Kenra do what she always does and go back to the guy she shouldn’t?
I don’t know if I have ever yelled more while reading a book! Sometimes you just want to reach through the pages and slap the characters, and that is what I wanted to do with Kenra. I’m pretty sure I went through every emotion on the human spectrum while reading this book. This book was a journey, from start to finish I was enthralled and couldn’t put the book down. I needed to know what was going to happen and I needed to know if my Parker was going to finally get the love he deserved. This was a great addition to the Tender Hearts Series, and I love that we got to catch up with Kalani and Nate, while learning more about Parker and his relationship with Kenra. I also loved that we got to see even more of the friendship between Kalani and Parker. I promise this book will leave you begging for more, in the best possible way!
This book is sooo good, I couldn’t put it down I ended up staying up until 3am just so I could finish, I needed to know how it ended! Defenceless Hearts had me hooked from page one until the very end, I loved every moment.
The angst, drama, intrigue, family loyalty along with the love is what makes this such an epic read.
Kenra has slowly become a shell of her former self, but the strength she has to keep going and do whatever she has to to keep her family and loved ones safe is what had me love her so much.
Parker is selfless, careing, loyal and willing to give anything the the girl he loves the strenght she needs even if it leaves him broken.
I love how Parker is able to give Kenra strengh and bring her back to herself and pull her out of the depression she deals with.
I cannot wait to see the read the next book in the series.
Great storyline and easy to read. The female lead is not as strong as the previous lead but the story is still original with a well thought out plot and very descriptive characters
A man who fell in love and wasn’t going to let go no matter what and a woman who was so strong, even though she felt weak, would sacrifice everything to protect her loved ones.
Parker loved Kenra for what seemed like forever, but their timing was never right. Kenra was always off again or on again with Kellan. They were set to have the perfect life…but something just felt off to Parker.
Parker is now in California finally free of all his past. And with his bff’s help, he is able to move forward with nothing hold him back. Kenra shows up at his door with his sister in tow. His sixteen year old pregnant sister.
Their past just won’t stay there. Even engaged, he can;t hold back his feelings and neither can Kenra. Life is complicated. Things are not always what they seem. The perfect life is anything but.
This story was an emotional roller coaster. Half the time I wanted to smack Kenra and the rest of the time I wanted to hug her. So much was going on…we got to see quite a bit of Lolli and Nate, who I adore. We met a bunch of new characters that I hope get their own stories, especially Payton. That girl deserves a HEA. And Parker and Kenra’s story, although their road was wrought with heartbreak and sacrifice, in the end it was beautiful.
I binged these books after finding this author through her book Boys of Brayshaw High. She is definitely an automatic 1-click for me!
Defenseless Hearts is the second book in the series of Tender Hearts, i highly recommend book one Fumbled hearts it was also a great read, plus you get some back story on these amazing characters.
From the very beginning it grabs your attention and you don’t want to put it down. There’s moments with Parker that will have you annoyed with his girl but have faith in her everything happens for a reason.
You’ll want to one click this bad boy when it comes out.
One of my favs of 2018
I have really enjoyed this series, and Parker’s book is no different. The glimpses of Lolli and Nate, entwined with Parker and his leading lady, really make this book something special.
Through the majority of the book, when Parker got turned away, I wanted to scream and yell and smack some sense into his lady, but when all was said and done, it made the ending so much more meaningful.
There is so much I want to say about this book, but every time I try to work out the words, I hit spoilers. Just know, that you need to read this one!! Today!
