Fans of this genre will pick out the bad guy very early in the book, making it feel padded before the reveal. Learning the killer’s identity of a long-ago murder takes a bit more time but lacks the punch of a surprise because there are only so many characters who could have committed the murder. That unresolved murder is a thread throughout. Purity Island is a great ironic name for the story setting and what happens in a place that doesn’t live up to its name. The heroine’s growth from an abused girlfriend to a strong woman feels realistic as does the growing trust she feels for the handsome and charismatic hero. Overall, though, tying all the threads together takes a lot of pages.
Murder, Abuse, and Love.
Oh wow, where does one start!
It’s not often that I am totally hooked from page one but this one had me.
Brilliant, clever writing that has so many twists and turns it will have you in a spin.
Great characters that you will be loving and hating and will have you shouting at the book like you would if you were watching a movie.
The relationships between the characters are brilliant, and they are something that you would expect from a small community like Purity Island.
A place where everyone knows everyone else, and most have grown up together.
When Nell returns to Purity Island she is hoping to escape an abusive and controlling relationship with her fiancé Caleb. But very quickly she finds herself becoming embroiled in even deeper trouble.
She knew going back wasn’t going to be easy because of what happened to her best friend Lizzie when they were both teenagers; but nothing could prepare her for how some people still felt that Lizzies death was all Nell’s fault.
Someone really wants Nell to leave the island, and are prepared to make that happen, but why?
Who can she trust?
What if Caleb finds her? He is determined to make her pay for shaming him by leaving him. Because in his mind; she belongs to him. None else will have her!
Just BRILLIANT!
This book hits the ground running and almost never stops! The first pages draw you in, keeping you hooked as the story is slowly revealed.
The characters are realistic and well written, from abuse survivor Nell to psychotic Caleb. There’s plenty of suspension throughout the book, with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing almost until the end.
A great read for lovers of psychological thrillers! Highly recommend.
Previously been published under the title The Darkness Beneath
Nell, running from an abusive partner, returns to her aunt’s home .. a place that her partner does not know even exists. This is not the only secret she has.
As a teenager, she was hired to babysit. She had a friend cover for her so she could spend some time with her boyfriend at the time. That night, intruders broke in and killed her friend. She has never forgotten nor has she never stopped feeling guilty.
Upon her return, she finds that not everyone is happy to see her. Her friend’s brother, in particular, heartily blames Nell and makes it clear that she is unwelcome there.
Someone has targeted Nell in a scare campaign. Her friend’s brother? Has her abusive boyfriend found her? Or someone even closer?
Suspenseful from the start, it becomes more so as the story progresses. Suspects are many..and they all bear watching. There are secrets that someone will kill to protect and Nell is front and center. With a possible new romance in the making. I enjoyed how Nell and Alex, police chief, related and interacted with each other. As with most families, there are problems, some small, some insurmountable. I liked how everything meshed for a terrific reading.
