I read at least a quarter of this book and that was a struggle. BORING. Characters were not interesting, repetitive, no action, nothing in the least scary. I gave up.
Who does Konrad Savast remind me of? He most definitely is not Sherlock Holmes, even in the Holmesian fantastical adventures. I think that Konrad is more like the focused responsible Henri Davenforth combined with the sauve gentility of Sherard Seaton with a significant dash of the dour combativeness of Nathaniel Garrett. It is hard to find a good paranormal detective murder mysteruy series set in a fantasy world. This was a surprise and a delight. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys “The Angel of the Crows” by Katherine Addison or Sherlock Holmes or Harry Dresden.
I loved this series of short stories and all the characters within. Charlotte E English has done an amazing job crafting short mysteries that feel like full-length novels. She provides the perfect amount of world-building and backstory so that the reader can understand what is going on, without spending pages info-feeding to introduce the plot. The stories themselves are a great blend of dark and funny, creepy and lighthearted. Can’t wait to read more about Nan and Konrad!
A book that keeps you page-turning. Strongly recommended reading.
This is a great fantasy novel that has an original concept. Was a little slow in a couple chapters so I wouldn’t consider it a page turner by any means. Still a great book!
Intriguing. Death’s Detective is one of the most original series I’ve ever read. Konrad is the Malykant, a servant of the being Malykt, who presides over death. Whem a person is murdered, Konrad finds the murderer and delivers justice for the victim, usually by stabbing the murderer through the heart with a sharpened rib bone taken from the victim. In his quest, Konrad is helped bu Eetapi and Ootapi, two serpents from the spirit world. This volume contains four novellas; it was well written and creative. If you’d just told me about the premise, I would have probably passed on the books. But the author caught my interest quickly. The books also explore a deep friendship between Konrad and Irinana, an herbalist who sometimes helps with his cases. I strongly recommend this series.

Page turner.
These stories are simple, yet entertaining whodunnits. I like the primary characters and am interested in finding out more of their histories. These are fairly quick reads, so they are easy enough to get through in just an hour or two of reading. Volume 1 has four individual mysteries within it, The author combines, Victorian England, Magic and a Russian-like backdrop within what appears to be a different world from our own.
Loved this original take on a Victorian-like (more Eastern European) late 1800’s world with an intriguing main character. Konrad Savast is a disciple of the Malykant, a god of death and justice. He is the avenger. These read more like detective stories with some paranormal elements. Check them out – you’ll love the ghost snakes Ootapi and Eetapi.
