Lies and love. This is how a war starts.
A life for a life. That’s the mafia way. Damian Rossi owes his life to a man who is ready to collect. That payment comes in the form of an arranged marriage to the daughter of another leading family in the Chicago Outfit. He’s ready to follow through, even if that means making sure Lily knows she’s his.
Lily DeLuca isn’t being given a choice. Forced home … choice. Forced home to marry a man she doesn’t know and back into a life she’d rather forget, her world is full of half-truths, buried pain, and uncertainty. But Damian is nothing like she expects. His motives aren’t clear. Her beliefs are being tested.
When it comes to this world, no man can be trusted. Someone is ready to flip the Chicago Outfit on its side all for the promise of something better. But no one runs a clean game and these men play for keeps. When blood begins to paint Chicago red, four families will be divided by loyalty, hatred, and revenge. There is no hiding. There is no safety.
No one is deathless.
No one.

OhMgee. This audiobook is so good. I absolutely enjoyed listening to it from start to finish. I had some emotional moments, but it’s ok I enjoyed them all. Lots of Hawt moments. I need more of Damian and Lily.
Lily must return home and marry Damien for her safety. The joining of these two families can help strengthen the Outfit, or maybe help these two families take it over. Following Lily’s story is intense, and I could not stop reading. Lily reacts as I would have, so I can relate to her. Damien is scary at first, I was not sure what to make of him, but as the story progressed, I started to fall for him as Lily did. Their story is not easy. Suspense, drama, and murder follow them everywhere. Keeping secrets is the way of the Outfit and Lily must do so to protect Damien. Damien and Lily do not have a typical relationship, or even a typical arranged marriage. I loved the twists in the relationship, it gave the story depth.
Roberto Scarlato narrates the Outfit members perfectly. His accent fits with each character. Mr. Scarlato has an easy to listen to voice and he keeps a great pace. Mr. Scarlato has a smooth female voice that is easy to tell apart from his male voices. Mr. Scarlato brought this story to life.
This book was such a great start to the series. I loved that Lily was such a strong character and fighting family expectations and an arranged marriage. Damien wants to be a ghost in the mafia but he gets brought into the spotlight. Now they are finding each other at the beginning of a mafia war.
I’ve listened to a few performances by Roberto Scarlato, and he always has such a solid and smooth narration.

In Chicago, the mafia is called the Outfit. This story revolves around the four Italian families that run the Outfit: Trentini, Rossi, Conti and DeLuca with Terrance Trentini as the head of the Outfit.
Lily DeLuca has returned home to take her rightful place in the family. Her parents were murdered and her oldest brother, Dino was left in charge of her and her other brother Theo. Now that Lily is 21, she discovers that she is to be married. An arranged marriage to Damien Rossi, the Ghost of the Outfit. Damien owes Dino and he’s called in his marker.
This marriage will happen even though Lily is opposed. She doesn’t want to marry this man she doesn’t know. But she soon finds out that she does know him and he remembers her very well. Lily is opinionated, passionate and never backs down from letting Damian know she doesn’t want to marry him. Damian loves Lily’s feistiness, beauty and that they share a similar past. There is an attraction between the two and the slow tearing down of walls between Lily and Damian creates a liking and eventually a love between the two.
The Outfit is on a path of destruction. The four families begin spiraling out of control with paranoia, taking sides against one another, and plotting revenge. While this marriage should be a time of families coming together, it’s a beginning of a war.
I know this was the first book in a series but there were a lot of characters. With four families, it was a lot to keep track. But as the story continued, it was easier and easier to know who everyone was. Lily and her girlfriends, Damien and his cousin and the other men from the other families are all important as the Chicago Outfit goes to war within itself.
I will say that the narrator did a nice job. I would have loved a female narrator as well but the male narrator did good inflections with his voice with the many different characters.
I’m excited to continue The Chicago War with book 2 about Alessa and Adriano.
