I read this second in a series back-to-back hoping we’d get past he rather chaste references to sex… we had passionate kisses and illusions to sex – e.g., waking up the morning after… but nothing ever happened… nothing…. The murder-mystery aspects were okay but the gay characters never seemed to really click. Off camera, maybe, but we never got to know about it. Sad…so if there’s a third book, I won’t be reading it. 🙂
I’m ready for the third book! This second in the series continues with ‘my new friends’, the characters as they continue the adventures and investigations with many elements that my mind tries to figure out. A really fun read and hoping this becomes a long-lived series – I’m hooked!
Emory Rome has been fired as a Special Agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and is now a partner with Jeff Woodard and Virginia Kennon at Mourning Dove Private Investigators. He’s talking to a lawyer about suing to get his old job back, but he’s not sure which direction he wants to go into.
In the meantime, he will do what he does best … investigate death. In this case, a federal employee has blown in through a window on the 29th floor. Where did he come from? The cops are deciding if this was an accident or suicide… really???
And who is the man wearing the odd ski mask that seems to be following all of them?
What I enjoy most about this series of two (so far) is that the murders are on the peculiar side. This author adheres to the a “no guns or knives” philosophy for murder.
In addition to figuring out ‘who’ .. these Private Investigators need to find out the ‘how’ before they can find the ‘why’. There are lots of suspects … all seem to have secrets of one kind or another … the man who has now replaced him used to be his boss before the other man was promoted … his wife who seems to be having an affair ..and has just taken out a large insurance policy…. his therapist who may or may not be a real therapist.
I also really enjoyed the characters. Emory and Jeff have a budding relationship and Virginia has decided that she is much more than a secretary. I loved how they all relate to each other … mostly with humor, maybe a little sarcasm.
Although this is second in this series, it reads easily as a stand alone. However, I do recommend starting with the first book … MURDER ON THE LAKE OF FIRE.
Many thanks to the author / TBC Reviewer Request Group (FB) for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This five-star thriller was hard to put down! I was on the edge of my seat as I read about the near-death experiences faced by Jeff Woodard, Emory Rome, and Virginia Kennon! And that cliff-hanger… can’t wait for book three in the Mourning Dove Mystery series! Well worth reading!
Murder on the lake of fire, Is destined to be a classic mystery of who did it through mental twists and turns that never let you catch up, with so much more than a murder to try and solve . You’re allowed a front row seat visualizing lives destroyed and new loves grow. Immensely enjoyable journey.
This was an amazing read! The murder was crazy and the journey to solve was great – and more WTF moments like I read in the first book. I’m definitely following this series and and can’t wait for book 3.
