This is an incredible series (if you like Lara Adrian and Rebecca Zanetti, then you’ll LOVE this series!) Wow! Finally, Seth, precious Seth finds his love (with a little help from a toddler…) Some questions get answered and it just keeps getting better and better!
We’ve all been there where extended series are great at the beginning and then fall apart somehow later in the series. Not this one, Ms. Dianne weaves an incredibly interesting story, full of action and intrigue; with some hot, hot scenes mixed in. Great characters and some great humor too!
Seriously, if you want a page burner pick this one up. I do however recommend you read the series in order.
Truly an Epic read from Dianne. Seth’s book has been eagerly awaited and Dianne did not disappoint. So many emotional moments and one of the best romance ever between an Immortal and human. Lots of build up and then Bam! Make sure you have tissues handy! It Definitely has an HEA, but what a ride getting there! Highly recommended!
“better put your rain boots on. Because monsoon season is coming.” Funniest line ever! But you have to read this to understand what it means. Finally, we get Seth’s story. And what a story it is! I have loved this series from the very first book. And Seth is a very big reason why.
The Immortal Guardians is a group of, well, Immortals that have been protecting the planet from vampires for millenia. Each individual guardian has his own story, of course, being individuals. And with each book we learn more and more about the origin of these men and women. We’ve learned about the Others and where they fit in, we’ve learned about the “gifted ones” and what part they play in the creation of Immortals. We’ve learned about vampires and how it’s a virus that has infected humans that creates them to begin with, and how this virus eventually destroys them And we’ve learned about humans who find out about them all and how they react to the knowledge that such beings exist.
Throughout all this, we learn to love. We get to meet them individually, find out their histories and what makes them who they are. We get to love them each for their own personalities and not just for what they do to help our world. We even get to meet a woman from another planet who becomes the wife of one of the Immortals and has the first baby with an Immortal. And through all this, we watch their leader, Seth, watch over them all, as he has done for thousands of years, and does it, for the most part, alone, his only true companion his friend for thousands of years, David.
It’s a very lonely existence, being the leader of so diverse a group, being responsible for their well-being. While he does have David, and now recently Zach, to help him lead since they are almost as old as he is, it is still on his shoulders to make certain they all live through the horrors of fighting night after night against vampires who most likely have already succumbed to the madness that the virus inflicts on them. Through it all, since they have doctors and scientists trying to find a cure for this virus, they try to save what vampires they can until this cure can be found. After having found Cliff and then Stewart, vampires who desperately want to be a part of the Guardians and help fight the evils out there, who try so hard to fight this brain damage that has been caused by the virus, they now realize not all vampires are automatically evil, so they are constantly on the lookout for more that are basically good and want to fight off the effects of the virus as well. It is exhausting and heartbreaking work, and they must all fight diligently to keep humans safe and to protect each other, their seconds and their wives as well.
They have lost some of their brethren, most recently Yuri, and Stanislav. Although we find in Awaken the Darkness that Stanislav lived, the Immortals aren’t aware of this as yet as Seth’s story is told (and I will admit this a bit confusing since we already know he lives so it takes some of the angst out of the feeling of loss that is still going on in this newest edition). These losses, they are finding, are being put at the feet of an enemy that has proven to be extremely formidable, almost as powerful as Seth, and posing a threat to them all, but to Seth most of all.
This brings us to Seth’s story, and what a story it is. Surprises galore, excitement, heartbreak, laughter, it has it all. It had been awhile since I had read Awaken the Darkness, and so very many books in between that took over my thoughts, that I had forgotten how very much I enjoy the tales of these brave, dangerous and honorable, yet gentle and seriously goofy people. Dianne Duvall tells a tale in so gripping a way that you tend to forget you’re reading fiction and expect to meet one of these gentle giants at the grocery store or at a gas station, or just turning a corner some quiet evening. The characters come alive on the pages of her books, and this is such a rare thing, to be able to believe so fully in something so obviously fiction.
I will once again reiterate, Excellently Done, Dianne Duvall! Thank you for reminding me why your series has been one of my favorites for such a long time!
Wow what is there to say about this book? I would give it 10 stars if that was possible it was so good. I laughed, I cried, my stomach dropped to the floor. Seth’s book was something I think all Immortal Guardians fans were looking forward to and Dianne Duvall did NOT disappoint. This book was everything we could hope for and more. We learn some new things about Seth, his family, David, and his origins. I was not expecting the revelations but loved them none the less.
Leah Somerson was a surprise for Seth, but she fits in great with all the Immortals. I mean who would have thought that she would look at them and say “get some rain boots because monsoon season is coming” that was probably the best statement in the book next to everyone’s prank on them. I’m glad we got to see the toll that everything was taking on him and Darnell and David telling him to delegate to the other elders, Jared and Zach. Jared is having a blast with actually something to do teleporting all over the world helping Immortals kill vampires. I can’t say anything more without giving some spoilers. I enjoyed this book so much and am glad that we were given the ability to read Seth’s book. I can’t wait to see who is next. I really hope that either David or Jared is next in line.
Those of us who have been reading Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians series since it began have been eagerly awaiting Death of Darkness, Seth’s story.
It delivers! It is everything I could have wanted from this book and more–action, intrigue, and a love story for all time. Can’t wait for the next one.
Book source ~ ARC. My review is voluntary and honest.
The Immortal Guardians have been fighting for the safety of humanity for thousands of years. Seth is their leader, the stern disciplinarian, the mother hen, the worrier – he is the heart and soul of the Immortal Guardians. But he’s not like the other Immortal Guardians. He’s one of the Others and one of his former brethren is targeting him through his beloved Guardians. Gershom has lost his damn mind if he thinks Seth is just going to stand by and let him hurt and kill humans, gifted ones, and Immortal Guardians. Oh, hell no!
When Leah Somerson walks into his life, for the first time in several millennia Seth is torn in his duty. He must protect everyone, but he’s so lonely. Dare he allow himself to explore a relationship when Armageddon is about to break loose? As the other Guardians cotton onto Seth’s attraction to Leah, he may not have a choice. For the first time ever, they are plotting against him. But don’t worry, it’s really for him. Hell, if it were a Facebook relationship status it would say “It’s complicated.”
This series continues to sit in my Top Ten Favorite Series List. I sound like a broken record when I write my review for each story that comes out. I love it. I love them all. But Seth’s story…man, oh, man. Dianne Duvall outdid herself with this one. First of all, it’s massive. And Seth deserves every single page. Besides, there is a lot going on! Then there’s the characters. They step off the page. Almost literally. Strong women, strong men, a wonderful mix of paranormal elements, action, hot yummy steaminess, tension, laughter, and a whole gamut of emotions. I care for each and every character. Except the villains, of course. I started plowing through this book the day I received it, staying up way, way, way past my bedtime. I didn’t have a chance to finish it in one sitting, but I finished the next day. I even went back a few chapters to reread since I was so tired the night before I was afraid I may have missed something. I was so embedded and invested in the story it took me a few days to recover from my book hangover. I love and hate when that happens because I mourn the book world when I have to return to the real world. It doesn’t help that these stories are set in my home state of North Carolina, only about an hour from my location. It makes the setting even more real for me.
I don’t know what else to tell you. If the thought of starting yet another series is too daunting (trust me, I know that feeling) then have no fear. You can definitely read this book as a standalone. However, if you haven’t started with book 1, do so. Right now! *cough* I mean, please do so. Honestly, this book will have so much more depth and delicious richness if you do.
I have loved all of the Immortal Guardians books. But Seth’s book is the one I have been most excited about reading. Dianne Duvall did an AMAZING job on Seth and Leah. They both have had very painful pasts. But the more time they spend together and get to know each other, being friends just isn’t enough. We finally get to know the real Seth, and it totally blew me away. This is an amazing book and I can’t wait for the next to come.
5 well deserved stars! Everything we needed for Seth’s story-and then some! We get a wonderful romance with a super feisty hero, action for days, and all kinds of questions answered. However, we mainly get SETH! I love Seth, to be honest I think everyone who reads this series, loves Seth. As the leader of the Immortal Guardians, Seth has had only one love and that was thousands of years ago. He never ever thought he’d find love again and it was so much fun getting that story-finally. If you love paranormal romance and haven’t read these before, you are definitely missing out. Or even urban fantasy with a romance fans would love these books. Highly recommended to adult readers.
Love this series
I gave this 5 stars because I can’t see how to give it 6. This is book 9 in the Immortal Guardians series and I’ve been a fan since book 1. Learning Seth’s story was fascinating and of course seeing old friends is always a treat for me. This is one of my favorite series ever and I highly recommend it.
This book was everything I could hope Seth’s book would be. I really enjoyed the fact that Leah was in her 40s and had suffered her own loss. I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll just end on this ” BRAVO” And it was well worth the wait I look forward to seeing what comes next
The Immortal Guardians are a refreshing take on the standard vampire story. Even though a newcomer will comprehend the events in Death of Darkness, Seth’s journey should be experienced from the beginning. I always recommend discovering all the books in a series.
Death of Darkness represents a world of individuals who can kick serious a**. They are fiercely loyal and consider one another family. As a group, they help defend humanity against supernatural threats. The Immortal Guardian males are formidable and protective without being condescending or frightening. The Immortal Guardian females are as capable as the men in all areas, which remains a crucial factor to my enjoyment of this series.
What I enjoyed: Death of Darkness comprises a highly anticipated novel for me and in no way did it disappoint. As the leader of the Immortal Guardians, Seth has supported the weight of their world on his shoulders. It was pleasant to witness him relax a bit. While several conflicts were cleared up, there was a sweet intertwining of the burgeoning romance between Seth and Leah. Their relationship was unrushed and a friendship forged over time, even though it was clear from the beginning the two were romantically perfect for each other.
The wit that makes up all of the Immortal Guardians books was present, as was the seductive appeal of the lead. Several moments of suspense kept me on my toes, one, in particular, really got my blood pumping.
This series is a constant fixture in my to-read list of urban fantasy/ paranormal romances. I highly recommend it.
I could hardly contain myself and listed to this beautiful story that answered so many questions!
This was beautifully written, flowed smoothly and was so overwhelmed by seeing Seth find his love, his equal who brought out a side of Seth I believe we all knew was there. Leah was a joy to know and come to love, and her bubbly personality was a balm to Seth which Leah provided a safe haven where he could be his true self . The story never felt rushed or choppy, but I just wanted it to continue!!! Gersham proved to be a formidable enemy and the build up as laid out in all the books was a true work of art. The ending obviously opens up a whole new chapter [s] for the IG’s.
I have high hopes and wishes that this talented author is going to continue her IG storyline to the delight of her followers. I’m now starting all over [again x 10] at the beginning knowing more about Seth & David, as to what subtle innuendos I may have missed.

Narrator Performance:
Such an awesome book! There was action, humor and of course romance. There were a few times that I had tears in my eyes plus instances where I was like “Holy sh*t!” Duvall put some majorly big surprises in this one.
Kirsten Potter continues to be one of the best narrators out there. She constantly delivers a fantastic performance. Her acting is always realistic and the number of voices and accents that she has in her arsenal is astounding.
I’ve been waiting for Seth’s book since Darkness Dawns and oh my was it worth the wait. From the start there’s laughter, swoon worthy moments, and excitements. Every question you’ve ever asked is answered. One minute I’m laughing, then I’m screaming, I forgot the breathe a few times with how intense I was with this edge of your seat page turner. All 17hrs and 16 mins of this audiobook was worth it. Kirsten Potter you kicked ass. There’s no one else for the IGs, you know them so well. So many different characters and I’m able to distinguish each voice. You are a phenomenal narrator. If you don’t already have this book, get it. Better yet, if you haven’t listened or read this series, you’re missing out. Start with Darkness Dawns, I guarantee you’ll love them all. Fast paced action, humor, romance, and steamy sex scenes.
“Here. “ She shoved three large towels at his chest. “Get out of those wet clothes and dry off. Don’t worry,” she promised with a grin. “I’m not going to take advantage of you.”
He actually smiled then. “Would you be offended if I expressed disappointment?”
Death of Darkness is the mind-blowing, phenomenal and literally earth-shaking ninth entry in Dianne Duvall’s amazing Immortal Guardians saga. Seth receives his well-earned HEA with a riveting story that will heartily take your breath away. This tale will work well as a stand alone read if that is your preference, but fans will be tinkled pink as all their favorite characters from previous books play supporting roles. Series’ fans can also expect to be elated by stunning revelations about the Guardians’ past. Can a cure for the virus be around the corner?
Have you ever read a book in which you dread every time one of the lead characters’ phone rings? For millennia, Seth has been the father-figure for the Immortal Guardians. Celibate since tragically losing his mortal wife and children long ago, his family has since solely consisted of his beloved Guardians. He feels their joys and pain and takes complete responsibility for their safety. Since the villainous Gershom has risen in power equal to Seth’s, the danger to Seth’s beloved Guardians has been exponentially increased. The situation has dissolved to where workaholic Seth is on duty 24/hours a day in a never-ending struggle to keep his family safe from Gershom and his minions. Precious stolen moments with his adopted daughter, Ami, and his granddaughter, Adira, afford him a rare smile. Then, Seth meets Leah and experiences a joyful break from his bleak existence. Seth tries to deny himself the pleasure of Leah’s company but his friends, family and fate conspire against him.
Leah is a confident, mature human woman in her forties with a painful past somewhat similar to Seth’s losing her husband and child in a shocking accident years ago. She has clawed herself back from a depressing existence and now owns a children’s store which Ami and Adira frequent. Since the Guardians can’t be too careful with Gershom about, Seth and David visit Leah’s store to ensure that she’s not mind-controlled by Gershom. His visit aligns with certain adorable moments in which Adira plays match-maker linking Seth’s and Leah’s hands. But, Leah doesn’t want to be Seth’s cougar girl-friend so they agree to be friends until Leah is attacked.
I love Seth and Leah. He’s gorgeous, strong, generous, responsible and kind. She’s self-assured and hootingly rolls with the flow. Their banter is precious and her comments especially provide a plethora of laugh-out-loud moments. The chemistry between them is sweet and hot, hot, hot. Even days after finishing this book, my heart continues to sing for this couple.
Following please find a few of my favorite lines from Death of Darkness:
“Leah,” he whispered. Heart slamming against his ribs, he knelt beside her.
She glanced at his hand on her breast. “C-cradle robber,” she accused with a faint smile. “If I’d kn-known that was all I had to do to get you to feel me up, I w-would’ve gotten shot sooner.”
—
Seth ditched his pants.
Her eyes widened.
“Don’t say it,” he warned as he knelt on the edge of the bed.
“Don’t say what?” she asked, still staring at the hard length that strained toward her.
Grasping her delicate ankles, he eased her legs apart. “Big hands, big feet…”
Her lips twitched as she met his gaze. “Fine. I’ll just think it.”
—
“It storms when you make love?”
“Apparently.”
Turning back to the large warriors in the hallway, Leah flashed them all a grin. “Well then, boys, you’d better put your rain boots on. Because monsoon season is coming.”
Death of Darkness is teeming with passion, humor, action and suspense. It is a perfectly paced paranormal urban fantasy paired with a timeless romance. The book is big consisting of nearly 700 pages – all WITHOUT A SINGLE DULL MOMENT. NADA! NOT A ONE! I’m thrilled that there is more to come in this superlative, wonderfully fun, gripping series. I wonder whose story will be told next…? I hope dreadlock David’s is coming up soon, but I’m game for anyone’s in Dianne’s Immortal Guardians universe!
I love love love this book and definitely love the author. Dianne Duvall is one of my favorite authors. I would recommend this book to everyone and all of her other books as well. She has an amazing way of telling a story and keeping you on the edge of your seat. You will not be able to put this book down!!!
Immortal Guardians is my all time favorite book series. And Death of Darkness is probably the best of them all. Love Dianne Duvall’s work.
