The Dresden Files have taken the genre of paranormal mystery to a new level of action, excitement, and hard-hitting magical muscle. Now, in Death Masks, Jim Butcher’s smart-guy private eye may have taken on more than he can handle…Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But he also knows that whenever things are … that whenever things are going good, the only way left for them to go is bad. Way bad. Such as:
• A duel with the lethal champion of the Red Court, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards…
• Professional hit men using Harry for target practice…
• The missing Shroud of Turin—and the possible involvement of Chicago’s most feared mob boss…
• A handless and headless corpse the Chicago police need identified…
Not to mention the return of Harry’s ex-girlfriend Susan, who’s still struggling with her semi-vampiric nature. And who seems to have a new man in her life. Some days, it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you’re charging.

You can’t go wrong with Harry Dresden. I’m behind and hoping to catch up in this series. Between the world building, constant danger, villains of supernatural and human variety, and one amazingly cool lead character, it’s easy to lose yourself in the pages of these books. Death Masks is awesome!l
Wow, where to start with this book. While of course I really enjoyed it and am still maybe a little too much in love with Harry, this book felt like a lot is happening, almost too much.
Things got wild and often a bit confusing, and it felt like there was too much crammed into this book.
The red Court still wants Harry dead for the events in the last book and challenge him to a duel, a priest hires him to find and retrieve the stolen Shroud of Turin, Susan is back (sort of) and of course many, many other things happening along the way.
Like mentioned I think there was almost too much happening and at some parts I got confused a bit and had to back track, other things are still left open and to wonder, but hinted at.
Like his parents, or more his mom. Again we get some hints, that there is way more to it but again we are left wondering.
Of course we see some familiar faces that come along and help Harry or in some parts put him in his place.
Yes. Susan came to Harry, things got hot and complicated and a bit sad. I always liked Susan and she still is one my favorites and I hope we get to see more of her.
Also I have to say it again his friendship to Murphy is still one of my favorite things of the series so far, that and that Charity really doesn’t like him. It cracks me up band makes it soo much more fun and real, that someone really dislikes him and realizes how dangerous he is/ can be.
We learn some surprising g things about Marcone and I’m curious to see if we learn more about that later on.
Overall I really enjoyed, I wished we would get more of Bob and now also Thomas, he seems to be lurking, like we will learn more about him. I do really like him and hope to get more off.
I rate it 4, I would have rated a bit higher but, there was just too much going on that it felt a bit crammed and confusing.
I’m very much looking forward to start the next book.
I have totally enjoyed the entire Harry Dresden series.
have read the entire series. love them all
Jim Butcher has crafted yet another intricate, fast paced novel that you won’t be able to put down!
Most everything by Jim Butcher is amazing.
But I’m biased because I love this whole series…
Harry has to juggle many elements to right wrongs and determine what he truly wants.
What can I say? It is another amazing magical thriller featuring the witty, sarcastic wizard, Harry. It is exciting, edge of your seat action with paranormal elements and an examination of humanity. It was so enjoyable, I can not wait until the next one.
“It isn’t good to hold on too hard to the past. You can’t spend your whole life looking back. Not even when you can’t see what lies ahead. All you can do is keep on keeping on, and try to believe that tomorrow will be what it should be—even if it wasn’t what you expected.”
I’m doing a re-read of the Dresden Files and with each book, I’m reminded why I’m so freakin’ in love with this series! If you are a fan of kick ass stories, even if you aren’t a fan of the paranormal, I can’t recommend this series enough!
Book 5 is another fight extravaganza. Dresden is in over his head like always. This time he has to recover the stolen Shroud of Turin…yes, that shroud.
He is fighting with three Holy Nights by his side. Treachery and deception make the plot interesting and twisty.
The monster fights are unusually good. The dialogue is snappy but I didn’t like the way this book ended. Otherwise, a nice read.
I have read the whole series. I have enjoyed all of the books. Each is well written.
Great series on warlock detective in Chicago
For fans of the series.
I love Harry Dresden and his world so of course i recommend it. great characters and action, even if sometimes you get mad at them for screwing up.
Love this series. Skins Game is the only weak one, no apparent connection to the meta story. Yet.
The world Jim Butcher has created with his Harry Dresden series never disappoints. Highly entertaining.
Best. wizard ever.
Simply outstanding.
you should tack the book away no one will read it
I love all of these books!
