Talks with his personal God. Sabel darts, fists and bullets flying. Conspiracy and intrigue around every corner. Like every Seeley James book I have read, I didn’t want to put it down and I don’t think you will, either.
The plot could be from the news headlines…
Death and Conspiracy: A Jacob Stearne Thriller – a review by Rosemary Kenny
Talk about Dan Brown plotline meets Mission Impossible thrills and 007 spy shenanigans and you still haven’t covered all the bases!
Seeley James really has a magic touch when it comes to writing about MC Jacob Stearne and his ‘support team’ (not really present in this novel), at Sabel Security, that’s led by the lovely Pia Sabel, plus the riotously funny interaction Jacob enjoys with his ghostly (Roman messenger god of tricksters), advisor Mercury, who may or may not be real – or all in Jacob’s mind.
They’re all well-developed and very engaging characters, while the plotline would make a great script for the next James Bond or Mission Impossible movie.
Death and Conspiracy is the 7th and final book in the A Jacob Searne Thriller series, which is bang up to date, with the very real and present danger posed by terrorist organisations, (in this case Neo-Nazis, with a fanatical quest to bring about the downfall of other religions and start new ‘Crusades’ against each others’ followers world wide).
Why not try Death and Conspiracy by the wonderful Seeley James for yourself – you’re guaranteed to be completely spellbound until the very last page!
DEATH AND CONSPIRACY: A Jacob Stearne Thriller by Seeley James is a fast-paced, action packed thriller. Although this is the seventh book in the Sabel Security series, it can be easily read as a standalone. Each book contains continuing characters arcs, but the plot is unique.
Jacob Stearne is taking time off after his last mission for a romantic weekend in Paris with his girlfriend. As he waits in a bistro, Mercury (the Roman god is a figment of Jacob’s imagination and/or a manifestation of his battle-hardened combat sense) points out two possible terrorists about to enter a crowded cathedral. Jacob flies into action, but the eyewitnesses and the video of his heroic act, can be misinterpreted and some are accusing him of being one of the terrorists.
The French authorities and the CIA use the misunderstanding to leverage Jacob into helping them infiltrate an international conference of neo-Nazi fanatics to help uncover the next big attack. As he gets deeper into the group, he can trust no one, but at the same time he undermines his own credibility.
Can Jacob survive and stop the terrorists before thousands die and the world erupts into chaos?
This is such a roller-coaster-ride of a thriller! Mr. James has written a serious and topical thriller plot with great characters and lots of action, but he also has interspersed humor with the internal dialogues between Jacob and Mercury. I found it difficult to put this book down because of all the twists and turns.
I always feel like I should be watching these books on TV or at the movies instead of reading them. Thrills, terrorists, quirky characters and fast-moving plots make me a very happy Sabel Security series reader every time!
I received an ARC from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. In this, the 7th Sabel Security book, Mr. James is taking a detour into the thriller genre, and boy has he hit the ground running! Since Jacob and his awesome sidekick, Mercury are two of my favorite characters in all literature, I was thrilled (see what I did there?) to find them in another “fine mess”. As with the previous six Sabel books, there is plenty of action, suspense, and twists and turns. At times I felt like I had fallen into a whirlpool (which isn’t always a bad thing!). I really enjoy an author who keeps me on my toes and guessing who the “bad guy” is, and once again, Mr. James fits the bill. With his books I always find myself going from breath-holding tension to laugh out loud sarcasm and since sarcastic humor is my favorite kind, I’m always in hog heaven with these books. I can’t wait for the next installment in the series to make its appearance. If you haven’t picked up this series yet, you really need to. You are missing out in a big way!!!
Best one yet! Almost impossible to put down! Jacob and Mercury are in rare form! Constant action, adventure, and surprises while trying to stop a truly diabolical terrorist plot. Loved it!
“Heroes aren’t made. They rise up out of the dust when needed and return to it when the danger passes.”
What a fabulous story! Death and Conspiracy by Seeley James is a rock-solid, tension-filled ride that is completely entertaining all the way through. Jacob Stearne’s girlfriend has left him during their romantic Paris getaway, but that is the least of his worries. When this ex Army Ranger takes down two terrorists in a church in Paris, the action kicks into high gear and never stops until the highly explosive ending that will leave you craving more.
Jacob is an unusual protagonist because his constant companion happens to be Mercury, the winged messenger of the Roman gods, who may or may not be a figment of Jacob’s imagination. Either way, Jacob is both blessed and tormented by this jive-talking, used-up deity who is either helping Jacob in times of trouble or betting with the other gods that Jacob won’t survive this next dangerous caper. While Mercury often steals the show, Jacob is not without his charms. He is quick witted and lands on his feet (most of the time), but he is also delightfully flawed.
Some of the plot points might become confusing, but don’t despair. The author brings everything together brilliantly and with a great deal of flair. Seeley James also expertly balances the serious with the humorous. The interaction between Jacob and Mercury lends a bit of comic relief to the serious and quite disturbing plot of racism, terrorism, and white supremacy that is too realistic for comfort. But Jacob and his team of both real people and an imaginary (maybe) god are on the case, and together they are all courageous, audacious, diverse, and wholly entertaining.
Seeley James knows how to spin a tale using well-crafted prose, perfect pacing, and gifted characterization. You will definitely have difficulty putting down Death and Conspiracy, and if you haven’t already, you will probably want to get busy reading the rest of this author’s books. His writing is outstanding, well edited, and absolutely riveting.
If you like faced-paced international intrigue, magnetic characters, and an engrossing story line that makes you ponder humankind’s unbelievable capacity for evil as well as its capacity for heroism, then Death and Conspiracy needs to be next on your to-read list.
