This is book 4 of the series & the 3rd one I’ve read. Somehow, I missed #3 & am definitely going to have to go back & read it. The 3 I’ve read have all been 5 star reads.
Doris Cudlow is our amateur sleuth. I love how N.C. Lewis seems to have broken all the cozy rules in creating Doris. She’s not young, pretty, or have several men competing for her attention. She also didn’t inherit a house & business. She’s middle aged, slightly overweight & rents(when she can afford to pay!) a room in a boarding house. She divorced her husband because of her drug/ alcohol problems, but still loves him. And she’s constantly under or unemployed. In other words, she’s real. But she doesn’t dwell on these things.
Mrs. Lintott is her landlady , who knows everybody & everything. If Doris is out, by the time she gets home Mrs. Lintott knows where she was & exactly what she was doing. She’s a real winner! I get a big kick out of her. And, she really has a good heart.
The postie (mailman) is another great & unique character. He gets everybody in town to bet on things Doris does or may do. Even Mrs. Lintott bets with him.
This book had an extremely strong mystery. I thought Deadly Chapel (book#1) had a strong & unique mystery, but this one is just as strong.
Honestly, this one really gave me the creeps at times. I could feel how spooky the setting was & feel Doris’s fear.
The only con I had was that Doris’s good friend Grace gifted her a 6 pack of beer. Even if Grace is unaware of Doris’s past, Mrs. Lintott knows & she delivered the beer to Doris. I don’t think she’d have done that.
These books are fun, quick reads that really pull you in to Doris & her life in Skegness. Another standout in the series.
So, take a trip to Skegness & enjoy. Just watch out for the seagulls!
I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. And, believe me, I wouldn’t continue to read them if I wasn’t loving them. Too many books to read & life is short.
For the readers haven’t read other adventures of Doris Cudlow, she is the main character of the books.
She lived in London, and now she lives in Skegness, a small village on the coast.
Her dream is work as journalist for a local newspaper.
Skegness seems a quiet, boring village, but strange things happen.
nice books with a mistery stories, funny wonderful characters, enjoy!
Each book in this series is better than the one before. This time Doris fills in as an overnight security guard at a seemingly haunted museum. Many twists and turns in this cozy mystery! The writing is skillful, the plot is tight and multi-layered, and the characters are well developed and believable. It was an enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to reading more of this author’s work. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
