Well, I’m an effing moron. It took me forever to read this book. But not the way you’re thinking… so, let’s go from the beginning.
I’d been waiting for this book to be finished for what felt like for-freaking-ever. I had the fortune of getting a teaser from the author early on and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. So, as soon as I got my ARC (thank you very, very much Ms. Paige) I started it.
Now, everything that followed was on me. I wasn’t really in the mood for a dark-ish, twisty suspense, but as I love (and that is l.o.v.e. LOVE) Victoria Paige’s work and since she seriously knows how to keep you engaged, I read half the book in one sitting (well, make that one lying, as it was at night, but you get what I mean). When I woke up the next day (really, really sleep deprived) I just wasn’t in the mood to pick it up again. It could be that I wasn’t feeling Ella as much as I usually do with Ms. Paige’s female leads… ok. OK. More like I just didn’t like her because of how they met, even when I started to get the picture of why she did the things she did.
Last night I sat my stupid ass down and forced myself to restart it. And this is why I want to kick my own behind, hard. This book was FUCKING AWESOME. Ms. Paige has the ability to always keep you guessing. Whenever you’re sure you know where things are going she blindsides you with a twist out of nowhere that you would have never predicted.
Now, yes, Jake is the epitome of OTT alpha, and no, I don’t give one flying fig. I LOVE how Victoria Paige writes alpha males, I’m pretty sure all of her H’s are borderline (if not completely inside the category) OTT, but in a way that you want your own OTT alpha hot guy to follow you around. Well, I do anyway.
I really enjoyed the story, I think it was fresh and out of the norm especially with all the dark themed BDSM related reads now out there. I believe that even without the high-octane action her books are usually filled with, she still managed to keep the action and suspense flowing pretty much from start to finish.
P.S. I could never 100% like Ella, I understand now what and why she went through the things she did, but still can’t completely agree with her reasoning. Although by the end of the book I loved her, there’s a tiny little mini piece of me that just couldn’t completely connect with her. So this is why this is a 4.5 stars read for me and not a full 5 stars.
I think this book needs to be read when you’re exactly in the mood, but even if it ends as one of those that you hate to love, if you start it, you won’t be able to not see it through.
