Very enjoyable
THE WAY OF THE BRAVE
Susan May Warren
The vast aloneness of Alaska gave Orion the space to breathe, to scream
Ham wanted Orion to join his private international company SAR. He didn’t want anything to do with special op’s any more, or anybody’s troubles.
The need to find Royal a teammate captured in Afghanistan burned within, , the reasons were enough to get him to board a plane to NY and meet Ham.
Enough with other people’s trouble, he needed to be in Alaska.
Jenny, still facing the terrible mistakes she made, almost killing a man
Climbing Denali was something she had to do, needing a guide, Orion comes to mind, she won’t ask, sure he wouldn’t even want to talk to her.
She tells the men to join her group of 3 women to climb Denali together.
The plot is mainly of them climbing, and the rescues that happen. What drives them is guilt, wanting forgiveness, to name a few. Good account of how dangerous it is. Their mantra is, don’t look down, and one step at a time.
Good cast of people have been introduce, so hopefully they will have their own story to tell. Being this was the first in this series, we had more background on Jenny and Orion, of where they were coming from.Overall will look for more in the series. Given ARC. Y Net Galley and Revell for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
DCI Walker is in charge of a case of a college student killed and posed on campus. Two more young ladies killed and posed in the same fashion. Forensic psychologist George from the university, offers to help develop a profile of the killer.
Walker’s daughter gets taken by the killer. Walker and George are two females working together to find the perpetrator. A surprise ending of who is involved in the murders. A page turner.
This is the first in the series after a novella, The Night Shift, and where we now meet Dr. Georgina Cavendish, or George. One thing I didn’t like was the shocking jump forward of ten years with no explanation. I would have liked to find out more about that story line and what happened with her superiors as it felt unfinished and we were left hanging with the jerk that had it out for her. Now, since this book opens with her new title of DCI (Detective Chief Inspector) you do know she bested the jerk in the long run, but since it’s ten years later, did he affect her job, slowing down her progress or what? Now, in this book there is a serial killer loose at Lenchester University, and we meet George as she discovers the first victim while sneaking a smoke after fighting with her newish live-in boyfriend. George is an interesting character that reminds a bit of Monk, the OCD detective from years ago. George doesn’t appear to have OCD, but she likes order and facts and has trouble with social cues which seems a paradox to her profession as a forensic psychology professor. Psychology is a messy science and very subjective. She wants to help and believes she has the tools to do so and pushes her way into the investigation to the utter dismay and all round pissiness of DCI Whitney Walker. Eventually, Whitney thaws and you discover she’s more human than we may have thought previously, which is a reason to stick it out if her character bothers anyone. They slowly form a tepid friendship. All while Whitney is facing tremendous pressure from her latest superior for a mistake from a previous case. He keeps threatening to take her off this current case, if there is one more mistake (as he perceives). It turns out it will take both Cavendish & Walker along with Whitney’s crew to solve these murders.
This is a mystery/thriller about a serial killer. A little light on the police procedural, but definitely not a cozy.
It is also a story about the unlikely partnership between a forensic psychologist who just might be on the spectrum and a DCI who is having a run of bad luck.
I found the mystery to be a bit predictable and called the serial killer about 1/2 way through, but there were some good red herrings and plausible suspects. Scenes from the villains POV were creepy. I did appreciate the well placed clues rather than pulling some villain out of a hat at the end. It was well thought out. Plus it was interesting to watch the relationship between Cavendish and Walker develop.
Recommended for fans of Bones.
One morning when she’s walking to her lecturing job at the university, dr Georgina Cavendish discovers the dead body of one of her students. She offers her help as a forensic psychologist to DCI Whitney Walker who turns her down. If more similar murders occur, eventually she reluctantly accepts the help of George as a profiler. The 2 women are complete opposites and at first, they can’t stand each other. As they start working together, they get to know one another and realise that there are things they have in common and that in a team opposites may be an asset. All the victims are students of the same university that ‘s attended by Whitney’s daughter, Tiffany who also knew some of the murdered girls.
I absolutely loved this story! This is a British detective as I like them best. Well shaped and believable characters with a normal home life and backgrounds, an exciting and original story. Nearing the end I did have a hunch who the killer was, but wasn’t sure nor completely right. I’m quite happy this is but the first book in a series, as it means there ‘s more to come.
I received a free ACR from the author, but this is a completely honest review
I loved this book! It was so hard to put it down to go to work or go to sleep! I highly recommend this book. I am so excited to read more books from this author.
I really enjoyed this story about these two women. Each with their own problems trying to just do their jobs and keep people safe. I enjoy how the characters are feeling out the other while trying to work together.
Really enjoyed this story. Did not want to put it down. Really good at delving into the characters and motives. I received an ARC of this book.
This is the first time in reading this author with her expert drawing me to the novel. Really liking the challenge the mysteries can give you this one fills that order.
Whitney is whom we get to meet first with soon after Georgina thanks to her find. You are given the opportunity to follow them in finding the clues and solving this. It will twist you up at times keeping you on your toes. They have alot of personality that it is easy to stick with them. The intrigue in this is high caliber. All the murders are different but with some of the same. Had my nose in this from beginning to end.
I enjoyed this book. Finished very quickly because I had to. Because I needed to know the truth.
This is a great start to a new series. The female lead characters are both strong women but so very different in their personalities. Whitney Walker is a detective who has worked for all that she has. She has raised a daughter and is the now helping her mother and brother. She is all about the job. Georgina Cavendish is a professor at the local college. Her family is well off and pretty pretentious. She doesn’t show her emotions and comes off as being snobby.
The two cross paths during an investigation of a murder on the college campus. Their first few meetings are a lot of clashing as you would expect from the two very different women. I found it great that they found a way to work together and become friends.
The mystery in this story was intriguing. There were a number of suspects and enough surprises to carry this to a satisfying ending. The author presents the steps to solving the crime in a very logical manner.
I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more in the series.
Deadly Games is the first book I’ve read by Sally Rigby and I loved it. She’s brilliant at laying out the plot so the reader is left wanting more until the very end.
I’m new to British procedurals and found I really liked the way that the story moved forward. The crime was methodically broken down and made you feel like you were right in the planning room along with the team.
The characters were imperfect and real, with family problems, personal challenges and room to grow.
Dr. Georgina Cavendish is head of the forensic psychology program at the university. She’s has a plan for everything, and likes to have her life organized and predictable. Spontaneity is not in her vocabulary.
What happens when she discovers the body of one of her students on the campus grounds? How will she handle having her life shaken up by circumstances—should she offer to help?
DCI Whitney Walker doesn’t have time for fools. She worked hard to get where she’s at and she tells it like it is. Her life is a bit of a mess, but she gets the job done.
There’s just one problem. When a body is discovered on the university campus she finds herself being rubbed the wrong way by the witness. She doesn’t like the stuck-up professor and definitely doesn’t want her help.
As the body count mounts Cavendish and Walker find it necessary to work together.
I loved the not-yet-friendship between the two. They are abrasive with each other, yet grow in mutual respect as the story progresses.
The author grips your emotions at just the right moments and had me guessing until the end.
Great book. A copy was given to me by the author and this is an honest review.
I was lucky enough to have gotten a ARC copy of this book from the author. I am volunteering to leave this review. This book will keep you guessing till the end.
this is the first book I have read by this author! Wow! lots of mystery and twists and turns. DCI Whitney and Dr George are trying to find the murderer of college girls. Very complex and interesting characters. Lots of suspense, this book keeps you wanting to turn the page, could not put it down. What an ending!
This is the beginning of an exciting new series featuring DCI Whitney Walker and Forensic Psychologist, Dr. Georgina Cavendish. It all begins when George (Georgina) finds the body of a college student who has been murdered. George is a teacher and researcher and wants nothing more to help the police find this killer.
Whitney and George are polar opposites. Whitney has a tendency to do things her own way and not about the consequences later. This has caused her supervisors an untold amount of frustration. George is a planner, resistant to changes, predictable. How these two women go from not liking each other to becoming, if not life-long friends, colleagues who can and do work together to reach one goal …. bring justice to the victims and put away the killer.
This student is not the only one to be found …. very similar to the first girl. Alternating chapters give the reader an insight to the mind of a killer .. and to how law enforcement go about looking at possible suspects. And with an entire college to look at, the suspects are plenty.
When the killer targets Whitney’s daughter, also a college student, things become rather fraught in fear and anger. There are surprising twists and turns leading to an unexpected ending.
Many thanks to the author / TBC Reviewer Request Group (FB) for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A great whodunit with wonderful character interactions. Each new fact leaves you going …oh, well then maybe… all the way to the very end of the book. Unlike most mysteries I didn’t really figure it out till the very end which made for a great read.
The author takes you on a journey with two totally different characters who make for a pair of talented investigator working at first, at odds but then who come together to solve the crime. Can’t wait for another book with these two, I’m hooked!
