Kylie’s new job is turning out to be a real killer…When quiet, unassuming Jessica Hilyard mysteriously disappears, Kylie Hatfield promises Jessica’s sister she’ll find her. So what if she’s technically just the office assistant at Starr Investigations? It’s the perfect opportunity to prove to her boss she has what it takes to become a real private investigator. But when the evidence starts to … when the evidence starts to link Jessica’s disappearance to a dangerous serial killer, everyone warns Kylie to back off the case—the police, her boss, and Linc Coulter, the maddeningly sexy ex-soldier who’s training (or trying to train) her nutty Newfoundland dog, Vader, and making Kylie crazy in the process. But nothing’s going to stop Kylie from becoming a full-fledged private investigator…not even the threat of an unexpected murderer, who wants to take more than just her life.
By turns humorous, romantic, and downright chilling, Deadly Act, the first book in the Kylie Hatfield Series, will delight fans of Kendra Elliott, Melinda Leigh, and Rachel Caine.

Liked the determination of the main character, Kylie to be a private investigator. This had good characters, romance and suspense.
This is the first novel in a new series by two authors new to me, Mary Stone and Bella Cross. They have done a masterful job creating characters that are relatable, fun and delightfully quirky! I admit though that was the main female character, Kyle’s dog that made me pick up the book. Her black Newfoundland puppy, Vader, shares my black and white carrier’s name. My Darth Vader, called Vader for short is no Sith Lord! And I have long wanted to include him in my own story. So I picked up the book to see how the authors had used the dog in their story. And I fell in love! Vader is a big fluffy doofus of a dog. His antics made me laugh until I cried. But even more wonderful is that he is a perfect partner for the zany Assistant P.I Kylie. Kylie is a magnet for trouble and Vader while seemingly silly is really very good at protecting his partner from the bad guys.
The Ashville that the authors have created is a perfect backdrop for the character’s adventure ! There is plenty off suspense with many twists and turns to keeping you guessing to the end . There is also romance between two opposite personalities (Kylie and dog trainer, Linc) that also kept me on the edge of my seat . I kept wondering if they were ever going to realize that their differences would give them balance. From beginning to end this book was a delightful romp that kept me enthralled on a snowy Missouri afternoon ( by the way finished it in the wee hours of the morning it was just that kind of a book).
A real bonus is that the prequel was free for subscribing to the authors’ website. And the series is available under Kindle Unlimited so it makes it ready to pick up as soon as I clear some space in the library! I am recommending this book to all my dog mystery friends! Well Done Mary and Bella! Keep on writing!
Kylie Hatfield has taken a job as assistant to a private investigator which leads her into doing some investigating on her own. When Jessica Hilyard, a quiet local girl, disappears Kylie is on the case as it seems everything about the girl tells Kylie that Jessica wouldn’t have just taken off especially not without talking to her sister. Kylie promises the sister that she’ll do everything she can to find an answer. However, things are more complicated than they seem and Kylie is now in the sights of a killer. In addition, Kylie’s relationship with Linc Coulter is heating up. Linc is training Kylie’s Newfoundland, Vader. He also heads up the local Search and Rescue team and trains SAR dogs. The two of them must work together to find the killer.
This book had me hooked from start to finish. With lots of action and intrigue, “Deadly Act, grabs your interest and doesn’t let go. It’s well-written with well-rounded characters you’ll love getting to know. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the rest of the series.
Another page turning up all night read. The book takes you into so many directions. Twists makes it more chilling. To much use of the f-word.
Very good read. Kept me on the edge of my seat.
Kylie is a feisty young thing and wants to prove to the world that she can be a PI. She takes many chances and danger comes her way!! I can’t wait until the next book comes out!
This is the first of a new series by Mary Stone and co-writer Bella Cross. I enjoyed the book once I was about a quarter way through. It was a little slow paced and exchange between the main characters was kind of childish at first. After Kylie really started focusing more on finding the missing person, it started to get interesting. Lots of twists and turns. Looking forward to to future stories about Kylie and Linc.
I enjoyed reading this book can’t wait for next one
Kylie promises Jessica’s sister she will find her. But Kylie isn’t really a detective, private or otherwise. She is an office assistant at Starr Investigations. But that doesn’t stop Kylie, even when everyone tells her to back off! Can she find Jessica? Did a deranged serial killer get her and will Kylie be next? You will have to read the book to find out. This story has mystery, humor, some romance, and a dog! What’s not to love? I voluntarily reviewed a free ARC of this book.
A new Co-Author brings a completely different viewpoint on a serial murder mystery
This new mystery introduces us to Kylie Hatfield, office assistant to a private Investigator. Kylie aspires to become a real private eye while overestimating her abilities to perform that sort of work. Deciding to take on a simple missing person case soon leads her into tracking a series of characters, all of whom bear a certain eerie similarity.
Accompanied by Vader, a huge adopted Newfoundland dog, Kylie looks into a trail of clues. A local police detective seems to try, simultaneously, to discourage her investigative efforts and seduce her. Help and guidance also comes from Lync, a dog trainer who is helping her train the unruly dog to be more manageable. A plethora of odd events keep the plot moving towards a climactic conclusion.
I had a hard time getting into this book, but after the first 2 chapters I could hardly put the book down. It introduces us to Kylie, who isn’t really sure what she wants to do with her life, but is working as an aid to a private investigator. She has a big furry dog, a Newfoundland, who is always at her side, She gets involved in a case and this leads to mystery, romance and some humor.
I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
Authors Mary Stone and Bella Cross have teamed up to bring us the delightful new “Kylie Hatfield Series”. We are introduced to Kylie Hatfield, a young college drop out who after not deciding on what to do with her life has decided she wants to enter the at times not so glamorous profession of being a Private Detective, rescue dog Vader; Linc Coulter, a Search and Rescue specialist who also trains dogs for this specialized job (he has also agreed to TRY and train Vader and Kylie as dog and master) and his four legged canine friend Storm. We also meet Greg Starr of Starr Investigations who is an old time investigator ow probably wishes it was sit the 20th century, and YES, he is Kylies boss.
As I mentioned earlier, Kylie is a college drop( and yes she does act a little spacey at times much like some others I have known until they can find that niche they feel comfortable in) and Linc also is a college dropout for a different reason. He left a promising career in law and his families fortunes to join the military. Now, like many young men he is learning it has a price to pay as he faces his demons at night and alone. Rather than surrender to these demons as many have done and are doing (approximately 22 veterans a day commit suicide after giving up on themselves), he is using his skills with Storm and other dogs to help others in their time of need.
As Kylie follows supposedly innocent and unconnected items to look into a disappearance (she is NOT an investigator as Mr. Starr keeps telling her so she CANNOT investigate it), you must read this book to see how everything and everyone will fare. This simple disappearance turns into a ??? READ IT!
