When Chicago Black Hawks hockey legend Boom Boom Warshawski slips off a wharf and drowns in Lake Michigan, his private-eye cousin questions the accidental death report and rumors of suicide. Armed with a bottle of Black Label and a Smith & Weson, V.I. follows a trail of violence and corruption to the center of the Windy City’s powerful shipping industry. Dodging elaborate attempts on her life … life with characteristic grit and humor, the one-of-a-kind detective wends her way through a maze of grain elevators and thousand-ton freighters, ruthless businessmen and gorgeous ballerinas, to ferret out Boom Boom’s killers before they phase her out of the picture—permanently.

VI’s back and this time it’s personal. Although it appears like her cousin, Boom Boom Warshawski, a famous hockey player, slipped off the wharf, VI smells trouble lurking in the depths of his shallow grave. 4 of 5 stars to Deadlock, the second book in the VI Warshawski thriller mystery series by Sara Paretsky. When it’s family, you won’t stop …
This is the 2nd book in the Warshawski series. I like that the main character is a female detective. It’s completely different from the Kinsey Milhone series by Sue Griffith, but very good. The characters are believable and interesting. The plot was a little complicated but I don’t think that made me enjoy it any less. I recommend this book.
Early in the series, this book goes far to establish the main character. She is fun and enviable—smart, independent, attractive and eats real food, but remains fit!
Not so good as many of hers. The story sorta dragged as she tried to drag in too many bad guys.
Paretsky is always a good read!
Paretsky is a favorite. Love her style. Interesting information on shipping on Great Lakes. Good mystery.
Sarah Paretsky is always a good read, and this one was no exception. Just the right amount of intrigue and action!
One of my favorite characters!
Sara gets better with time.
Like all the books I read written by her the characters are interesting and engaging and there is always a great storty. The plot develops over time and draws me in.
This book in particular had an interesting plot and as always it was well researched in areas that related to the plot, even though it was fiction.
Enjoyed a lot.
I’ve read this author for many, many years and I’ve never been disappointed.
This author always keeps you guessing.
