From the world of the bestselling Lexi Graves Mysteries… furnishing is a handsome squatter with roving eyes. Even worse, Ben Kosina, her predecessor at The Chronicle, has returned to claim his former job, leaving Shayne nothing but the obituary column and a simple choice: take it or leave it.
Her first assignment should be easy: eulogizing the accidental death of washed-up former child-star, Chucky Barnard, and filing her column. Yet when Shayne interviews the people closest to Chucky, his sister claims Chucky had everything to live for, suggesting his untimely death could only be murder.
Convinced this could be the perfect headline to put her life back on track, Shayne vows to find the truth, persuade a reticent homicide detective to investigate, and bring a killer to justice, all before Ben grabs her story and the killer makes Shayne his or her personal deadline.

Dead Ringer lands with an intensity that will keep the reader up all night if that is what it takes to solve the disappearance of a surprising number of young models and actresses. When Shayne overhears a comment about a missing actress, it drives her on two fronts. One, of course, is to make her way back to the front page, but even more important to her is the fact that no one even seems to realize that these women have disappeared. The only thing they have in common is their appearance, an appearance that is frighteningly similar to one of Shayne’s best friends.
After having helped solve two murders and snagging the headlining by-line, Shayne is more discontent than ever at the let down in her new job. The LA Chronicle isn’t a big name but it is a name in a big city newspaper and a stepping stone to something great, or it should have been until the investigative reporter she was supposed to replace returned just as she arrived to step into his shoes. Now she is frustratingly overwhelmed with obituaries and entertainment fluff. And the woman who had the job, and the guy, before her has walked back into the news room like she owns the place, and him. Shayne and Ben have reached a good point in their new relationship but Shayne isn’t sure it is strong enough to handle the return of Ms. Thing or the fact that he seems to have hijacked her big story. She couldn’t take it if he takes over her investigation of the missing women.
Fans of Camilla Chafer will not be surprised with the number of twists and turns we encounter through the story, but they still won’t be prepared for the surprises she has in store.
This was a fun book! I finished it in a day. It has great characters and plot is solid and moves smoothly. The mystery is not overly complicated, I knew the murderer as soon as the character was introduced. Several laugh out loud moments.
It is a fun read. A cozy mystery with a few twists and turns.
Great character building. Made me want more.
Camilla Chafer is wonderful. If you are looking for a well written, witty, cozy mystery she is the one to read.
Wonderful h, new city, new job, new friends in great situations. Well done, even if it was easy to figure out, it was a fun read.
This is a feel good story that starts with Shayne moving to LA for a big newspaper reporter job, but ends up being entertainment and obits reporter. The storyline evolves from sad and disappointing to happily ever after when Shayne discovers a death is murder and she scores the front page story.
Entertaining
Fun read to escape the daily rigors of life. Looking forward to reading second book in the series. Hope more to come.
Enjoyed this read.
Easy reading. Very entertaining
I don’t enjoy a book where everything has to go wrong. Is this an attempt at humor? Is it because the actual mystery isn’t strong enough to carry the story through the plot?
I loved this book. One of my first to read.
Enjoyable read. Fun characters. Just wish it hadn’t
ended so abruptly
Lot’:s of twists in the plot
Cute story
The lead character seemed like a real person with flaws and normal reactions. She was presented as a reporter with that type of curiosity and drive.
I thought it was without much of a plot. It didn’t hold my interest
Was a little bit predictable. Overall I enjoyed the book. Would I recommend it? Maybe for a light read.
Some unexpected things, some twists, some everyday life make this an enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed this book. I could totally relate to the female reporter and her adventurous endeavors. It was an easy read and very entertaining.
