Hunting a killer within New York’s urban jungle becomes the biggest case of Alexandra Cooper’s career in this blockbuster thriller from New York Times bestselling author Linda Fairstein. A wild heart beats within New York City. Amid concrete and skyscrapers, the Wildlife Conservation Society works to preserve and protect the animal kingdom both within and beyond the borders of the five … borders of the five boroughs. But dangerous creatures don’t always have claws and fangs, as Assistant DA Alexandra Cooper and NYPD detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace know all too well. Predators lurk close to home, and in the aftermath of the shocking assassination of an iconic public figure—someone Alex has worked with for years—the trio must unravel the motive behind the shooting to discover who is the bigger snake: the killer or the victim.
The murder investigation provides more questions than answers, as a tangled mess of secrets slowly comes to light. From street gangs to secret societies, from big-game hunting to the illegal animal trade, from New York City zoos to the highest offices in city government, Alex has her work cut out for her—especially since the task force handling the investigation, led by the US Attorney, seems to be more against her than with her. As tensions rise between Alex and the feds, she must determine just how far she is willing to go to uncover the truth—and uphold the integrity of the office she has so proudly served.
Deadfall proves once again why Linda Fairstein is hailed as “a champion teller of detective tales” (USA Today).

I recommend Deadfall to anyone who likes woman-in-jeopardy or procedural murder mysteries. Because this is a good one. The books starts with the murder victim dying in our feisty heroine’s arms. Then while she is weak and vulnerable she is interrogated by some tough investigators. I felt so happy that so far I live such a dull life and have to get my excitement by reading riveting fiction like that of Linda Fairstein.
I first read Linda due to Bookbub and then I bought this one and was not disappointed.
I enjoyed “Deadfall”, and I’m hoping that the Alexandra Cooper I have grown to know and love has finally returned. The last book was depressing to read, because the main character was depressed and traumatized, after occurrences in a prior book. In the first half of “Deadfall”, Alexandra is still depressed and not functioning on all cylinders. In the beginning of the book, her boss is killed in front of her, as he was racing to meet her, and Alex is suspected of willfully drawing him out to be assassinated. She is, of course, forbidden from assisting in the investigation, because she’s a suspect, but that never stops our fearless heroine. Working with Mike and Mercer, she is able to start drawing lines between big game hunting, importing illegal ivory, and importing drugs. Mid-way through the story, she gets really angry, and the old Alex comes back to life, ready to kick butt and solve crime. The informational settings for this book are the two zoos in New York City, and, as usual, the author provides great information about the zoos, as well as the topics involved in the crime. I love Linda Fairstein’s books for the great characters, but also for the great descriptions of behind-the-scenes areas of her famous settings.
All of her books are great. All of her books I have to backtrack to see who is talking. But all of her books are great. I have to give more than one word to describe her books. I hope she still writes. She is one of my favorite authors.
Great series but not the best book in the series. Alex is much weaker than in previous books and this book depends too much on having read the previous book in the series.
In the heart of Manhattan, District Attorney Battaglia is hunted down and shot, falling into the arms of Assistant DA Alexandra Cooper on the step of the Met. The story of Deadfall accelerates from there as investigators and reporters speculate on what led him to find her that night. Was the DA targeted because of a previous conviction or current investigation? Had the shot been intended for Cooper?
The search for answers drives Alex, her boyfriend NYPD Detective Mike Chapman, and Detective Mercer Wallace into dangerous, dark places of intrigue, political ambition, and international trade. Start this book early in the day or you’ll spend the night up for just one more chapter, and another, and another.
The Alexandra Cooper series grows stronger and richer with each book.
Ms. Fairstein writes action filled, realistic books drawing from her years as ADA in NYC’s SVU. Being a New Yorker I like the realism and accurate local references.
I am in the process of reading the whole collection of Alex Cooper books.
I really like all of her books.
have read many other books in the series. characters and stories are engrossing, endings surprising and page turner.
Deadfall by Linda Fairstein is the latest in the Alexandra Cooper series. It starts with the murder of Alex’s boss Paul Battaglia. As he was calling to speak to Alex on the steps of the Met, he fell into her arms after being shot in the head. Now Alex is under suspicion for being involved in the murder because of her suspension from work and the previous tensions with her boss.
Alex is questioned harshly and Mike, Alex and Mercer work to find answers to the murder. As they dig into Battaglia’s past a few surprises await them!
How was Battaglia affiliated with the same secret hunting society as Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the Order of St. Hubertus? Who is the mysterious Diana? How does illegally imported ivory, drugs, and hunting big game weave together to warrant murder?
This book is filled with different suspects and reasons Battaglia could have been silenced, and now Alex has become the focus for a hired sharpshooter. We will hike with Alex through the high desert mountains, run with her through train yards, and hide with her in the wild edges of a zoo. This fast paced thriller keeps you turning pages!
Deadfall is Linda Fairstein’s 19th Alexandra Cooper book. What finominul book and series !!! Filled with LF’s glorious, action-packed thrilling page turning and unpredictable twists and turns. As a former NYC ADA she builds stories around headline news. I MUST read this series as each book first comes out !!! This time, Thank You to Penguin Group Dutton for allowing me, through NetGalley, to read Deadfall as an ARC. I am voluntarily posting this review. After the murder to NY’s career DA, Alex learns a new and much darker meaning of the term Deadfall. Though on leave because of a past case, this Asst. DA is never ‘off work’. And as one case leads into another, Alex is on the trail of the murderer. Also as a target. With her loyal friends, NYC Detectives Mike Chapman (now lover) and Mercer Wallace, become educated and consumed by a dangerous business. The worldwide illegal animal trade. Suprising vast. Who are the major players and who is being played ?!? Are all officials good guys ?!? No matter, Alex, Mike and Mercer will prevail but at what costs ?!?
