Dead Wood is what great mysteries are all about: love, hate, faith and vengeance, all wrapped up in an explosive story that simply refuses to let up.
“Dead Wood is a fast-paced, unpredictable mystery with an engaging narrator and a rich cast of original supporting characters.” -Thomas Perry, Edgar-winning author of The Butcher’s Boy.
“From its opening lines, Dan Ames and his private eye novel DEAD WOOD recall early James Ellroy: a fresh attitude and voice and the heady rush of boundless yearning and ambition. Ames delivers a vivid evocation of time and place in a way that few authors achieve, nailing the essence of his chosen corner of high-tone Michigan. He also deftly dodges the pitfalls that make so much contemporary private detective fiction a mixed bag and nostalgia-freighted misfire. Ames’s detective has family; he’s steady. He’s not another burned-out, booze-hound hanging on teeth and toenails to the world and smugly wallowing in his own ennui. This is the first new private eye novel in a long time that just swept me along for the ride. Ames is definitely one to watch.” — Edgar-nominated author Craig McDonald
Dan Ames’s writing reminds me of the great thriller writers — lean, mean, no nonsense prose that gets straight to the point and keeps you turning those pages.” –author Robert Gregory Browne
“As gritty as the Detroit streets where it’s set, DEAD WOOD grabs you early on and doesn’t let go. As fine a a debut as you’ll come across this year, maybe any year.” –author Tom Schreck
Enjoyed this book. Kept you turning pages!
Excellent writing, plot and characters
If reading about physical evidence is enjoyable to you, then this is the book for you. Lots of violence Main character, a PI, is a bit too flippant for my tastes.
This is the first book that i have read from this author—it will not be the last—–
It starts with a shocking murder and is a roller coaster ride from there.
I like the friends that John has and I like the way that John and the Chief of Police interact. You can tell that they are related.
I thought I knew who the killer was and I was not …
I liked the story and the characters. I didn’t like the unnecessary foul language.
Intense intrigue and action!
John Rockne’s police career barely made it past his probationary period, but that is what happens when you mistakenly deliver a victim back to their murderer. Now Jack is a PI in Grosse Pointe where his sister, Ellen, is the Chief of Police. He is hired by Clarence Barre, a country singer/songwriter, to solve his …
I enjoyed the beginning of this series. The main character is likable and gets himself into many dangerous scenes in this book. I liked the plot. I was kept entertained throughout the entire book. I want to read more from this series.
Great thriller – highly recommend!
Good mystery story that had many twists. I was confused at times where the plot was centered as so many divergent plots. Suspenseful ending was redeeming.
I had a hard time getting into this book. Stopped reading it and never finished it.
The book dragged in parts, almost redundant or too much detail repeated. It did not seem realistic at times. But maybe Pzis sometimes have more guts than brains, but he did seem to be portrayed as a sensitive. Caring man, as well.
Loved the sarcasm of the main character
I kinda liked the premise, but I dunno. I just couldn’t get too involved. Skipped a lot to the end
Left me wondering what else was going to happen!
Thought it was a good read. Would recommend it.
I really liked this book
Very good read. Humor and angst and information all in one package. Had most of the why figured but the details and colateral lines stay hidden for a while.
love this series!!! hard-boiled detective, fast and furious and phenomenal.
Dead bodies everywhere. Cold water everywhere. Clues everywhere. Very complicated and entertaining.
Excellent start to finish good read I recommend it
