I have only read one story in this book, “Things That Are Just True”. It is a wonderful read! The story takes you on a journey then puts in a GREAT twist that I didn’t see coming. It finishes off with the new twist and how it affects the beginning. Corinne O’Flynn is a great writer and I will be looking for more of her books.
That was awesome! Each story was creepy and very original! Most creepy stories seem to follow a specific formula, these completely left hat formula behind. I absolutely loved them! The only thing that disappointed me was that they seemed too short, I would have loved to read these as full length novels!
Four Fits of Fear is an appropriate title for this collection of short stories. A great read for Halloween or anytime that you want a little scare!
“The Missing” by Kristi Helvig makes you never want to wander alone into the woods after dark! Jess is a young woman who decides to take a shortcut through the woods in order to get to a party on time. However, will she ever reach her destination or will she encounter something supernatural that will change her life?
“My Final Gift” by Sue Duff introduces the reader to Russell Ratchet, a young man who never knew his father. Maybe that is a good thing….
“The Escape Room” by A.G. Henley finds four friends who decide to go to an escape room after graduation. They have an hour to solve the puzzles within and “escape”. But, when things start to go wrong, they aren’t sure if it is a game after all! The ending to this one was a real surprise and a definite twist I wasn’t expecting.
“Things that are Just True” by Corinne O’Flynn is an eerie tale of good vs. evil. Can there really be good without evil? And, how is it kept in balance? Is there someone here on Earth that is keeping the balance and, if so, how is it being accomplished?
Each of the stories were creepy and entertaining. Not extremely scary, but very thought provoking and gave me a few moments that had me looking around while I was reading.
I was given a copy of this book by one of the authors and chose to review it.
I found that each story kept me going, always wanted to find out more. What happened need more! Great atmosphere to the storyline of each story. Want more from the authors of the stories. Each character was believable in its own environment. The creepiest held up to the end with a couple twists and turns thrown in there. Perfect for the fall read and curl up with a good book. Loved this book!
I was provided this ARC by one of the authors in exchange for an honest review. There are 4 stories by 4 different authors, as well as sneak peeks over books by each author. I don’t typically read anthologies but this one sounded so intriguing.
The Missing by Kristi Helvig was a good story. I was guessing until the end. I would have liked a little more to it but I enjoyed it. Solid 3 stars. The sneak peek of Wing Collector left me wanting to know what happened next. It seemed a little scattered but I will be finding this book to read in full. I would give this story 2 stars.
My Final Gift by Sue Duff left me with my mouth hanging open. I had not expected what happened. I would love to read a full length book based on this story. This is a 5 star story. Fade to Black – I need to know more about these visions and how a magician plays into it all. 5 stars and I will be trying to find this book.
The Escape Room by A.G. Henley also left me with my mouth hanging open. It makes me rethink going into another escape room. It gave me chills. Probably because even though there is a remotely small chance, something like this COULD happen. I also loved how it did a countdown. This story was 5 stars in my opinion. The Scourge sneak peek was definitely a different genre than The Escape Room. I’m interested in knowing what happens next. It seems like it could be a fantasy/horror type book. 3 stars.
Things That Just Are by Corinne O’Flynn caught me by surprise. I didn’t see that coming. For that, I give the story a 2. I didn’t like the whole ‘file this under’ theme. I felt it was definitely overdone. It was such a short story and it repeated those words numerous times. Ghosts of Witches Past is a 3. Another one where I am curious as to what happens next.
Overall, the anthology is 3.5, rounded up to 4. I appreciate the opportunity to read these stories. If you are a fan of fantasy, this is definitely the anthology for you. I did like how they each had their own suspenseful angel.
Dead Night: Four Fits of Fear – Four stories by four authors of which I may have read the book(s) of two. Each author gives a sneak preview of a book, “also by” book listing and their bio. I contacted Ms. O’Flynn to review her books a long time past.
Corrine O’Flynn, Things That Are Just True – I’ve read books by this author before and liked them. While this story started a little slow from her usual work, the intrigue picked up and the story moved at a faster pace. While the nine-year-old boy ran the gamut of emotions, his father remained at an even keel, almost too calm. Her sneak peek is Ghosts of Witches Past, which is a good story. Needs minor editing. 4*
Kristi Helvig, The Missing – This may be my first read by this author. Well written, but I don’t care for this age group and I really didn’t like the main character. I found her selfish and self absorbed, and stupid. After she reaches the purpose of the story, it gets a lot better. The story reminded me of Twilight Zone and Cryptkeeper episodes. Needs minor editing. There’s a sneak peak for The Wing Collector, which I didn’t bother reading. 3*
A.G. Henley, The Escape Room – This is my first read by this author and I dislike this short. The characters aren’t likable, but stupid. They didn’t think anything through and wanted to use their hints without making an effort. I got bored and stopped with chapter three, although I read the last chapter and wasn’t impressed. There’s a sneak peak for The Scourge, which I didn’t bother reading. 2*
Sue Duff, My Final Gift – This is my first read by this author and I like this short. Very well written, full of suspense and intrigue, the perfect story for Halloween. Good characters and what they did to help the main character. Needs minor editing. There’s a sneak peak for The Weir Chronicles, which I didn’t bother reading. 4*
