This book drew me in and held me delightfully-captive from beginning to end. The palpable tension held me in thrall. The plot kept me guessing. The characters were realistic, likable and identifiable. And, every settings was described in such a way as to make me feel like I was an actual bystander in that scene. Once I started reading this story, I knew this was a book I wasn’t going to be able to put down!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Bookouture in order to read and provide a voluntary and honest review, should I choose to do so.

DEAD MEMORIES (D.I. Kim Stone Book #10) by Angela Marsons is a British police procedural that never fails to keep my nose in the book from start to finish. I know I can pick up a D.I. Kim Stone book and be engrossed by both some of my favorite characters and an intricate plot.
In this addition to the series, there is an unknown person recreating every traumatic event from Kim’s past down to the smallest detail. Someone wants to emotionally destroy Kim and Kim and her team believe the finale will be her death.
Kim has spent years catching and caging dangerous criminals. Now, she and her team need to sift through all the possible suspects from her past in a race to save her life.
I am never disappointed by a book in this series! By the time an author gets to this many books in a series it can become stale, but not this one. Angela Marsons has written a protagonist that is emotionally complex, strong and lives for the justice she provides for the victims she stands for. Her team is not just filler, but each has their unique qualities and characteristics which make them as integral to my love of these stories as Kim. This plot brought back all the villains I have loved to hate and still Kim comes out on top with the help of her team.
I can highly recommend this addition to the D.I. Kim Stone series and really the whole series! If you have not read any of these books, you are definitely missing out on one of the best series in this genre.
Thanks very much to Bookouture and Net Galley for allowing me to read this eARC for review.
Definitely a page-turner. I hadn’t read the other books by this author but I was able to get into it quickly. The world building and descriptive nature of the book is something else. A fantastic writing style and definitely an author I would check out again.
I believe I repeat this comment every time I review a DI Kim Stone story– this book is even better than the last one. In Dead Memories, Marsons uses a unique methodology to share many of the secrets Kim holds close to her chest, or boxed up as she admits, with her team and the readers. Every crime scene is a vignette, so to speak, of a horrible event Kim endured in her childhood. The more I learn the more my heart breaks for the young child and the adult who believes she must carry her burden alone.
In this case, many of the men who Kim arrested in the past are serving time in the same prison. They have a Kim “Hate Club,” where they plan how to get back at her. The question is who among the many people she arrested is capable of these horrific crimes and how did they find out the details of her past?
Tension starts early on, not only in the quest to find the killer, but the fear that Kim won’t handle the revelations of her childhood. Her team surprises her by their reactions and support. Even Woody makes allowances to help her get through the case and remain emotionally intact. Shockingly, the strong and dependable Bryant has a slight melt down worrying about his boss. So many emotional moments for everyone involved.
I must caution anyone who is tempted to read this book out of order. The mystery is intense, but all the backstory is lost without knowing what happened in the previous books. Also, begin this book in the evening only if you are ready to give up a night’s sleep—it is hard to put the book down. I highly recommend Dead Memories to DI Kim Stone fans, and the series to anyone who loves a well-researched and executed police procedural. Trust me on this!
I was thrilled to be approved by NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of Angela Marson’s latest book. The past ties in with the present in this one and Kim is faced with a decision. To either accept the truth or deny it.
A young couple found chained to a radiator bring back a host of memories, mirroring a dark time in Kim’s childhood. Although the case has startling similarities, it becomes very clear that someone wants her to relive the pain she once suffered, Kim is not unduly phased overall. The traumatic events of her childhood—a haunting theme throughout the series—has been summarized in this tenth instalment. But even though someone is ‘picking at the closed boxes in her mind,’ she is one of those exceptional people who takes strength in weakness. Tough, hard-wearing and deliciously assertive, she’s certainly not immune to emotion.
There are former felons stoking hatred from behind prison walls and other cases to be investigated. With seamlessly thick, complex plots and a crime team to die for, you can’t help loving these books for the way they’re written. I like Alison for her bottle, Woody, who appears to get more devious by the minute and, of course, tolerant and unflappable Bryant. With a cast of capable characters returning with every ‘episode’, the uber-sharp Kim Stone has to be one of the best detectives out there. A twisty, fast-paced plot stocked with red herrings, Marsons aficionados will be very happy to add this book to their bookshelves alongside other Kim Stone novels.
BIG thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. This is an honest review for a thoroughly enjoyable read.
This is the tenth book in the Detective Kim Stone series. Detective Stone has one of her most baffling cases as the scene originally looked like an accidental overdose death, but quickly shifts to a murder investigation. Kim was shocked when she saw the scene, the handcuffs, the Coke bottle, the young man dead and the young woman barely alive. Someone had staged the scene to duplicate a tragic event from her earlier life. When the next case involves a middle-aged couple found dead in a burnt car, she knows that someone is sending her a message. Kim is worried that she might be taken off of the case and agrees to have Dr. Alison Lowe, profiler, monitor her behavior during the investigation. Who could be so evil as to take the lives of innocent people to taunt her? She knows the killer might be coming after her next and investigates those that she has helped incarcerate to see who could possibly hate her that much. She comes across a “hate club” at the prison and she is the one they all hate. The story is involved and intense and it took a little while for me to follow the action, although I think it helped that I have read, and enjoyed, all of the Detective Kim Stone books. Ms. Marson knows how to get you “hooked” so that you don’t want to quit reading until the book is finished. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review.
