Brother Cadfael must intervene when a prisoner exchange is interrupted by love and murder, in the Silver Dagger Award–winning medieval mystery series. In February of 1141, men march home from war to Shrewsbury, but the captured sheriff Gilbert Prestcote is not among them. Elis, a young Welsh prisoner, is delivered to the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul to begin a tale that will test Brother … will test Brother Cadfael’s sense of justice—and his heart.
By good fortune, it seems, the prisoner can be exchanged as Sheriff Prestcote’s ransom. What no one expects is that good-natured Elis will be struck down by cupid’s arrow. The sheriff’s own daughter holds him in thrall, and she, too, is blind with passion. But regaining her father means losing her lover. The sheriff, ailing and frail, is brought to the abbey’s infirmary—where he is murdered. Suspicion falls on the prisoner, who has only his Welsh honor to gain Brother Cadfael’s help. And Cadfael gives it, not knowing the truth will be a trial for his own soul.

I find Brother Cadfael to be a wonderful “detective.” Great characters and engaging plot. The historical setting makes it real to the time period and political climate and culture of the day. Great!
I love this series. Bought all of them
LOVED the Brother Cadfael mystery series set in the times of the 1st English Civil War!!
Wonderful characters with original story. Interesting how things done yesterday are similar today. As in finding the bad guys…enjoy a terrific story.
Ellis Peters is always worth reading.
I have enjoyed all of the Brother Cadfael books, but this edition was difficult for me to get absorbed into, because the Kindle editor/translator/transcriber was in love with commas. Commas were used in place of hyphens and thrown into the middle of sentences for no reason. I found this very disruptive to the story.
The Brother Cadfael Mysteries are a clever study of ancient sleuthing by a monk to deduce the murderer! He manages to see justice triumph evil in a time we wouldn’t think anyone would use deductive resin to solve crimes.
I love the Brother Cadfael mysteries. They explain the lifestyles of the various characters and are an interesting read.
This series is excellent if you are fascinated by the high Middle Ages in England.
Cadfael is one of my favorite detectives
I love all the characters in the Brother Cadfael Series! Ellis Peter’s writing style is such that you get caught up in the mystery early on, and are anxious to see who and what caused this mystery toward the end of the book. Highly recommend to historical fiction lovers!
