I absolutely loved this novel. It was such a blast for me to read that it made me want to reread it. It has everything a mystery novel should have. It’s action packed and very entertaining. Wonderful characters that have a great world build to them. It’s unpredictable and funny in places. Talk about a page-turner. This is a novel that you need to read.
Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie by Mark Nolan is the first book in the Jake Wolfe series. This is an amazing start to what is an incredible series and will really capture your attention from start to finish.
This book is absolutely gripping and exciting to read. I found it to be fast paced and I really could not turn the pages fast enough.
I loved the main character – he was such an interesting person and really made the book all the better. I became really invested in his story and had to read more to find out what would happen.
The is such a strong start to a series and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you have don’t so already buy this book today!
Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie (Jake Wolfe #1) is an action-packed thriller. This gripping tale is one rollercoaster ride with lots of twists and turns you don’t see coming. It is a suspenseful thriller that is so engrossing that the end is upon you before you know it. As much as there is action galore and a barrel of suspense it is also funny. Jake and his best friend Terrell just crack me up. Not to mention Cody.
Jake Wolfe is ex-military, and also a photojournalist for local news. Whilst following a lead for digging up dirt on a high-profile lawyer, he witnesses his murder, putting himself in the path of the killer. What ensues is a game of cat and mouse as the killer is hell bent on tracking down Jake. But he is not the only one that wants to take Jake down, his ex druggie alcoholic fiancée is abusive and unhinged and a sociopath who is a police officer and a major bully also want a piece of the action. He has found an amazing woman but can he hang on to her?
Mark is a unique and dynamic storyteller and he packs a punch with his vivid vision and portrayal of fully developed characters and never-ending action.
This was my first time reading any book by Mark Nolan. While I did enjoy the story I felt like it dragged on just a bit. However, it did keep me engaged and I did find myself wanting to find out what was going to happen.
Jake Wolfe is a former Marine who is employed as a photojournalist. His boss gave him the task of tailing a high profile attorney to see if he could uncover some dirt on him. What Jake found himself in the middle of might have been more that he thought would be involved. While watching the lawyer and several of his buddies talk it up on the fairway he witnesses his subject get murdered. Jake inadvertently sees the assassin hiding in a tree and gets a picture. The assassin, known as The Artist, is picking off lawyers for a big pay day. They aren’t just any lawyers though, they are high profile, the kind that bring you media attention. The Artist has been doing this job for years and will not be brought down by a man and his camera. There is an even bigger pay day waiting for him of he can also take out Jake Wolfe, a man who is causing more trouble than he knows. Who will come out ahead in this game of cat and mouse? Will the luck of the Irish stay with Jake or will his luck finally run out?
Having not read a lot of Mark Nolan’s previous books I was not sure what to expect, but this book is worth a read!
Nolan’s plot and then sub plots are a big feature with this book, they draw you in further and further down twists and turns until you don’t know where it will end and then suddenly it draws to a close. The author has a great ideas and shows these throughout his writing, keeping the reader entertained and engaged throughout the book.
The characters, main and background, are really well fleshed out so that the reader knows their backgrounds/history and why they act in the way that they do. The interactions between them are funny and entertaining as well as informing the reader on what the next action will be.
This book is fast paced and with tonnes of action thrown in to keep us all on the edge of our seats, it’s a book that kept me reading well into the middle of the night.
As a whole the book is a brilliant read and I would suggest it to any one who wants to get into the action genre of reading.
This is Book 1 of a series titled “Jake Wolf”. I want to admit right off the bat that I read Book 4 first. In respect to his character development, Nolan starts here with the same interesting mix of characters. Marine veterans who are friends for life, dogs which always make a good story for me and even a gorgeous boat. What more could you ask? Well…you could ask for all of that to be woven into a great story with good and bad guys and some action.
I’m having a difficult time vocalizing what I thought of this book. Here’s why…I fell in love with Mark Nolan’s characters in Book 4. Jake and Terrell; even his dog, Cody, made this series. I think he wrote action scenes as well here as he did in Book 4. However, I do think this was a little too long and I think it bogged down in a few places. That’s difficult for me to say because I am in love with Book 4.
So, in summary here’s what I think. I think Mark Nolan grew as a writer between Book 1 and Book 4. I am not professing to be any judge of writing skills. I’m just giving you my reader’s view; it’s just what I felt. I think his characters have grown and become comfortable throughout his books. This is very important to a reader. I think I had better read Book 2 and I think he better keep on writing more about Jake, Terrell and Cody.

What did I like? I am not a veteran but almost all the men in my family are and I totally support them in all instances! This was the best book that I have read in a long time that had my emotions run from high to low…. Laughing and crying! I admire both the Vets and the cops for the dedication that they have for what they do. This book hit a spot in my heart and I was caught up in the chase!
@ddeegott What will you like? Three of the most amazing lead characters that will be your favorites for the year! The mysteries are unusual, suspense is so high, action and adventure galore, vigilante justice with a vengeance, unique and unusual characters to fall in love with, emotions in high gear, witty dialogue that will keep you laughing and a little romance with two strong and more than a little stubborn people will top it off. I am looking forward to the next book which will release next month. I received this from the author for an honest review with no other compensation.
This first book in the Jake Wolfe series by Mark Nolan was a very taut and suspense-filled action adventure story as one government made killer tries to stop another government made killer. It was also combined with showing a great respect for all classes and types of emergency first responders, our military service, as well as other law enforcement agencies. It was also a very warm book about the relationship between military dogs and the bonds they form with their handlers. And, of course, it was also about a developing love story. Even though the book was rather long, the story sped right along to its designed ending. In between all the gore and bloodshed, the author infused several instances of humor to keep the story from becoming too maudlin and dark. This voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books is nearly 2 years late, for which I deeply apologize.
Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie is a fast-paced, nail-biting, suspenseful novel. Though a little farfetched at times, I found it entertaining and had a hard time putting it down. The characters are great and the storyline keeps you engrossed until the very end. This is the first in the Jake Wolfe series and I look forward to escaping into his world in the next novel.
good book

The Jake Wolfe series by Mark Nolan is this author’s first published work releasing in 2016. The series, named after the main character, Jake Wolfe, is a thriller, suspenseful, action series. The story is told mostly from Jake’s POV but there are lots of other POV’s to keep the reader involved in the many different storylines happening. I would highly recommend reading these books in the appropriate order as they follow the same characters and recurring storylines happen.
The first book, Dead Lawyers Don’t Lie, introduces us to Jake and his life, and it’s not a simple life. At first, this story starts off with just a man doing his job but we learn Jake is a lot more than a photographer on assignment. When the subject he’s following is killed, Jake has the skill and experience to save himself and get a picture of the man who killed the lawyer. Jake is then on the assassin’s radar and what starts as an intriguing, engaging, murder mystery travels far off that path to an action-packed story you’d expect to see in the movie theatre.
I really liked Jake, he was a nice guy. He had a horrible fiancée, and even when he could have been a jerk, he wasn’t. Jake was a man of many skills and successful at everything he did. He treated women with respect, and was always trying to be the hero rescuing them. He was mostly a good friend, though his best friend may have disagreed. He loved animals and was compassionate and rescued a military dog after a friend’s death. Jake takes responsibility for everything and everyone. He’s smart and does a great job at hunting down clues and unraveling a mystery. And he is sarcastic and witty, which I absolutely loved.
There were times that I rolled my eyes at something that happened and I needed to remind myself that this is fiction. The number of explosions, gunfights, car chases isn’t going to happen in real life without a lot of problems. And, in this book, it was just another day, no big deal. These were the items that made it seem more like it an action movie. And, because I loved the mystery angle, I felt that this wasted time from that storyline. And, this is a long book, 602 pages. It’s a commitment! I was 51% in and was exhausted and ready to be done despite loving the story. A lot happened in the first half of the book and I just thought I can’t take another 300 pages of this. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the writing and the story, but I could have done without some of the over the top, unbelievable action sequences cut out. It just felt like the author was adding every conceivable storyline, plot, car chase, bombs, and gunfight to the story just to have it.
The dialogue between the characters was engaging, amusing and really brought the characters to life! This book is a lot of dialogue, which in my opinion, is what made it so interesting. I loved the author’s writing style, he really brought this book to life. The storyline regarding the murders the assassin has been hired to commit was interesting and intriguing. The author gave us just enough of a glimpse of the targets to make readers (or me at least) not sad to see them get what’s coming to them.
Rating: 4 stars
This was a fun read and it had a few good twists in it.
Mark Ryan is my new favorite author. There was a whole lot of story in this one book. I’m reading the second book and it is just as entertaining as the first. Can’t wait for the third one to come out. I can easily see these books turning into movies.
It did not break my heart to read about an assassin takeout a few scummy lawyers. I enjoyed the book, it kept my interest from beginning to the end. The closer I got to the end the harder it was to put the book down just to go to sleep. A wide range of action, twists and personalities, some serious, some funny. Jake, our main character a retired wounded Marine, an ex CIA assassin and is now a photo journalist. He is now on the radar of another assassin Ivan because he caught some important details on his photos. Jake ends up with a displaced police dog and you will find a little pov from the dog too. Clearly this is fiction which is why I read it, so it was interesting with the dogs input, but it really shows the building of a dog/handler relationship.
I got a kick out of the mention of my husbands favorite beer in the book, Pipeline porter. Ivan has a huge ego and treats his kills like he is an artist. There are politics involved as Ivan is hired to keep a congressman away from a vote. He does not always kill his target, I thought the paint ball gun was a great idea. Ivan obviously has some baggage which is probably why he chose the path he chose as a career. This is a long book, but it covers a lot, gives a lot of insight and I did not feel it dragged on. I know some people get impatient reading a longer book, but you certainly get your moneys worth with this one. Jake is a very likable main character, he is protective of family, friends and his dog. I am looking forward to the next book to read. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review.
An interesting story but the writing is very childlike. The supposed witty banter between characters is silly. The reason I’m still reading the book until its finish is the only interesting character – Cody, the well-trained and faithful military dog. Now HIS dialog IS witty and interesting.
Interesting main character, but a little overplayed as being credible. Liked the loyalty theme, however.
Could not put it down
Great book. So great, I went and bought the Book 2 of the Jake Wolf series. Hope to read this author again!!
As a lawyer I was curious, but it spread the death around evenly. Wolfe is an engaging hero. The author doesn’t waste time. Things don’t get ridiculously stretched out of reality as in many. Good read. Jack Reacher fans will enjoy a different guy doing of the same things
It isn’t a copy cat by any means. … Just a strong lead in a fast moving tale
