5 STARS: Fans of Charlaine Harris and Janet Evanovich will enjoy Dead Eye. Alyssa Day has done it again! She’s written a story that’s so much fun to read that you don’t want to put it down. (Reader review)
For Jack Shepherd, tiger shape-shifter and former soldier, life is heading for a dead end. Dead End, Florida, to be exact. When he learns that he inherited a combination pawn shop/private investigation agency from his favorite uncle, Jack’s first job is to solve his uncle’s murder. Because sometimes it takes a tiger’s eye to see the truth.
Tess Callahan, who owns half a pawn shop in the strangest town in Florida, didn’t expect Jack to show up and be so very enticing. And exciting. And annoyingly over-protective. But when yet another dead body shows up on her doorstep, it’s time to take action. And if she has to team up with a sexy tiger shape-shifter to do it, well, that’s just a bonus.
Welcome to Dead End, Florida, where Bigfoot keeps a winter home. And welcome to the Tiger’s Eye Mysteries!
This novel is a paranormal mystery with magic, shape shifters, humor, vampires, a taxidermied alligator, witches, gunshots, bad singing, Crazy Hormonal Town, terrible parking, the FBI, swamp commandos, tigers, special agents, flirting, belly laughs, comedy, humor, and a pawn shop.
WARNING: Dangerous book!! Beware of I laughed so hard I almost peed a little* and I fell out of bed laughing.

Such a fun read! The characters are fabulous. It’s funny, paced just right, and I’ve already downloaded the second in the series. Well done!
Jack Shepherd returns from a military mission to find that his uncle has died and he’s now co-owner of his pawn shop and private investigation agency. Before he can even get his head around the idea that he’ll be sharing ownership with Tess, a fiery woman from his past, a dead body is literally thrown on their doorstep. His were tiger growl vibrates the rafters when he discovers his uncle didn’t just die. He was murdered in the same brutal manner. There’s a mystery to be solved and time’s a wasting.
The fur flies as Tess and Jack accept the fact they have to work together to get the job done. The chemistry between the two is like static electricity. Steamy and chaotic. He delights in teasing her, ruffling her feathers until he gets the heated response he wants and needs. She tries hard to remain indifferent and professional. But who can resist a tiger’s purrs. I loved these two together, whether fighting each other or loving each other, their interactions were such fun.
In a town named Dead End, I expected some quirky characters, strange occurrences and a whole lot of laughs. I got all of that and a delicious romance.
Will I read more of this series? Oh yes. I have to see what else happens to my new favorite couple and I want to revisit the exotic shop and see if something even weirder than a ratty old stuffed gator is brought in to pawn. Dead End, Florida is my kind of wacky town.
My first review because I really enjoyed it . the perfect blend of suspence & “downtime”
Finally, a book to follow after the adventures of Sookie by Charlain Harris. Supernatural tigers, witches, and oh my! Humor and wit and laugh out loud snorts as Tess Callahan deals with the regulars in her small town. Her Uncle Mike and Aunt Ruby provide a real down to earth life as they raised Tess. But there are the vampires and occasional witches living in town also…but it’s the south, so mind your manners.
There was a shooting leaving Tess part owner of a pawn shop. Now the other owner has shown up, hunky Jack with his shape shifting ability to become a tiger. Poor Tess can’t help herself around him even if he could think she was a walking steak.
Another shooting, another victim and a sheriff bent on putting Jack in jail. Sheriff Lawless is not the brightest and seems a bit off in his behavior but that would be hard to explain in this town. You have the local witch Olga, raising Shelly, and dealing with her sons Hank and Walt. A hairdresser that is in hiding. A dentist that decides dating Tess may not be good.
The writing is superb, plot great and everyone has something to contribute to the story. Great lines like when Tess tries a smile and some asks her if she has a toothache….”I really need to work on my fake smile.” Love that she can’t park a car to save her life, has a cat, and won’t touch people…..she can see how they die
The scares come as do the threats and magic but the humor makes this a special read. Better read this in a noisy place as you try and not snort and giggle. Mystery part comes together and ties up nicely. You root for Tess and Shelley and Jack. A pinch of lust and romance, curses and humor kept this book a delight to read!
Well this is the first book by Alyssa Day that I have read and I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed.
I was sad when the Sookie Stackhouse series by: Charlene Harris ended. They were such good books and had such amazing and entertaining characters. I loved how there was always a mystery and danger lurking around every corner. Well that is how these books are. They have that Sookie vibe that I have been missing and I am so glad I found these books.
In this first book we are introduced to our main character Tess. She is a pawn shop owner with a unique gift or shall I say nightmare in her eyes. Whenever she touches someone for the first time she gets a vision of their death. It is not an easy thing. It is painful and sometimes causes her to black out. So she rather not touch anyone.
The past owner of the pawn shop was like a father to her. He died and left her half of the pawn shop ownership, with the other half belonging to his nephew Jack. Whom no one has seen in years. 6 months later Jack shows up because someone has found him to let him know that his uncle has passed.
Tess is amazed at how nice looking Jack is. But that has to be a mistake. She has a boyfriend and Jack has led a dangerous life as a solider and none knows what he is like now, except that he is a tiger. Not a tiger in the sack and real life shape shifting tiger. Yep.
Jack has not even been home long and a body is dumped at the back door to the pawn shop. Jack suddenly figures out that his uncle was murdered and was not dead due to natural circumstances. The sheriff is an idiot and Jack is determined to find out who done it and if it is connected to the new body.
The chemistry between Jack and Tess is magnetic and I want more. I can’t wait to read the next book to find out if they ever become a couple or not. They should. Tess is smart, sassy and funny. Jack is sexy, strong, smart and protective. The banter between them was awesome. They had me cracking up.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a page turner that flowed nicely and was mysterious and a light cozy type read. I really enjoyed the vibe I got reading this book and can’t wait to continue the story in the next book. I think I can say I am hooked.

Kind of predictable,but readable
Love most of Tess’s humor. Despite the witches and Fluffy, sort of sounded like my old home town.
Fun book
2020 has been a train wreck, but Alyssa Day had just the cure I needed for a sour mood and stressed day. I loved the world, the characters (main & background), the plot, & the writing. I laughed out loud, & I cheered. If you liked Evanovich or Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse books, this is for you. It’s a cross between quirky characters and real peril, and I’ve already bought the next two. Highly Recommended.
The fantasy elements of shape shifters and vampires were just too weird for me.
I generally do not like books dealing with the paranormal.
Too sci-fi
Light-hearted murder mystery love story. Light reading and enjoyable. Doesn’t pretend to anything that it’s not.
I look forward to reading more about the characters.
Love the slow burn between the main characters and the laughs…the banter is so fun!
I liked this book the characters were interesting as was the story.
Light reading with great humor
fun, fun read. really different. kept me reading.
Great novel. Great characters and look forward to reading the next novel. I read it almost straight through.
Fun to read
Truly original series! What’s not to love about magic & hunky men??
