You ever hear the phrase embrace the suck? Trent once told me that it’s an old Army saying that means make the best out of a bad situation—which is how I find myself clinking a metal can against jailhouse bars and wondering if Elvis Presley had to put up with scratchy wool blankets when he sang Jailhouse Rock.I’m accused of killing someone, but that can’t be because I was busy nursing my granny … was busy nursing my granny back to health.
With the Dangerous Dames scattered far and wide and Trent refusing to answer my calls, what am I to do other than to shout Attica and hope for the best. I need to find the real killer and fast.
My name is Shelby Whitmore and before my inconvenient incarceration I was a reporter for the San Diego Metro News but now it looks like I’m going up the river for murder one.
Too bad I didn’t do it . . .

Two ex-strippers, two old ladies and the granddaughter of one of them walk into a bar. Stop if you’ve heard this one. If you haven’t, then you need to read Dead and Deceived (Funerals and Obituaries #3) by Jennifer Rebecca. This book is just as hilarious as the first two. I can’t get enough of this ragtag group of ladies.
Shelby Whitmore can’t seem to escape trouble. Her and her Dangerous Dames have gone out for a Ladies Night which includes tequila. When Shelby is approached by her crazy ex, her drunk self threatens him with a knife. Unfortunately, her sober self is now accused of killing her ex. Too bad she didn’t do it. Her crew is out to figure this out. She is running out of time trying to solve this and Trent is talking to her. She is feeling all is lost. But, with Shelby Whitmore, anything can happen.
This would be a series that I could read over and over. Jennifer Rebecca has created some hilarious characters put into crazy situations. Her and Trent’s grandmothers are usually right there in the the mix of things. Jennifer Rebecca, keep them coming. I will never grow tired of the Dangerous Dames. Thanks for another great story.
This is a hilarious but murderous story that just has to be read in one sitting! It’s too compelling to put down. So Shelby is accused of a murder she did not commit. You have to keep reading to see how she gets out of this!

It has been years since I’ve read Romantic Suspense novels but BT on the cover pulled my attention. This is book #3 in the series but I don’t think you need to read them in order. There are some references to characters and previous situations but you can pretty much figure out the history without having read them.
I want to touch first on the book dedication, loved it and I hope the teacher does see that passage. It is most important for us to encourage and inspire our children and not hold them back. Well done, and glad you got to say neener neener neener.
Ok so this book was tough for me, I didn’t jive with the writing style much and that hurt my enjoyment of the story. This one seemed like it was a good storyline but it flowed weird for me overall. I figured out pretty early the who-dun-it part of the story and was not loving the back and forth in the flow of the timeline. I was confused more than once if it was present time or a flashback etc.
The heroine Shelby is the obituary writer for a local paper who has been through the ringer of life. Hero Trent is a local cop that Shelby has started a relationship with over the years after running into him constantly. She also had an ex that required the police to be close by more often than not. When she is arrested for murder she finds herself quickly excommunicated from her small group of friends, and Trent, while trying to prove her innocence. She can’t believe everyone abandoned her but she understands them wanting to keep their distance. Her grandma is the only one who stands by her side, but even grandma isn’t invincible.
The secondary characters really made this novel more enjoyable for me for sure. The Grandma(s) were hysterical and their small group had me cracking up in many scenes. I give 3 ½ stars for this first read by a new to me author, that I voluntarily read and reviewed without expectations. I’m bummed I didn’t connect more with this book but I am sure it will not be affected by my slight disappointment haha. I do have the first 2 books to read as well and I will sometime in the near future. Always good to step out of our comfort zones and read something different every now and then.
I stumbled upon Jennifer Rebecca’s books with her Claire Goodnite series. If you’ve read any of my reviews, it’s no secret that romantic suspense is my top subgenre of the romance genre. And Tell Me A Story (book 1) sucked me right in, and kept me there until the bitter end. And it was a bittersweet ending. So, when I found out she had a romantic suspense series that was a mix of suspense and sarcastic romantic comedy, I was IN! And that’s how I ended up here, reviewing Dead and Deceived.
I guess this book could technically be called a standalone book, but really…to get the full effect of the Dangerous Dames and all their hilarious shenanigans, you have to read the entire series, and I highly recommend the Murder on Ice series as the characters do a LOT of crossover with the Funerals and Obituaries series.
OK! On to the review!
While the first two books of this series had a lot more lighthearted fun and mystery to them, this book took a pretty radical turn. While there are several laugh out loud moments and some sexy times, it’s a bit more serious, a LOT more angsty, and a good bit more emotional. And I don’t think I truly saw all of that coming when I dove into the book. So…be forewarned. I’ll be honest, there were several moments in the story that I nearly unfriended and unfollowed Jennifer Rebecca on social media because I was that upset for our favorite obit writer. In the end, though, I was glad no rash decisions on that front were made because she totally redeemed herself to me by The End.
NICUnurse’s Rating: Honestly, I was so thrown off course for a good 90 percent of this book that I had it in my head to knock off a star or two because I could NOT believe where she was taking this story. But alas, I preach and preach that reviews should be based on writing and story content, so I shall refrain from that impulse, as well! Despite the very different way this story played out, it was still a well-written whodunnit. As much as I was upset at first, after much thought and deliberation, I came to the conclusion that it’s a brilliant strategy of this author’s to keep us readers fully invested in these characters’ lives and to look forward to the next however many books she decides to take this series to. I give Dead and Deceived by Jennifer Rebecca 4.5 stars!
She is sat in a prison cell being accused of a murder she do not commit. He is not answering her calls. She needs to try to find out who really did it or she could end up serving life for a crime she had not committed. Can she prove she did not do it? Will her friends believe she is innocent? See how she get on
