“We may be the only ones left working to restore order to this world.”
So begins this apocalyptic tale of a young man named Thomas, a returning Veteran trying to become a Soldier with the Second Alliance in the fight against those who are trying to ruin what little humanity remains. A virus called Almawt has decimated the human population and, of course, there are those who try to take advantage of the horrible situation.
There is plenty of military action in this book, which is well-written and easy to follow. However, there is much more to this book than just gun battles and strategizing. Thomas is (obviously) suffering from PTSD from his time in Syria and finds it hard to let go of things that happened there. Also, his main reason for wanting to become a Soldier is his young charge, Joseph. The only way to make a better life for him is as a Soldier.
I liked the fact that Mr. Wilson did not find it necessary to have a lot of specific, graphic details of the abuses that the women in the book were suffering. Most books in this genre go for the horrific in order to impress the readers. IMHO, my imagination can probably scare me more than an author putting exact details to paper.
I would like to know more about the original outbreak of the Almawt virus as well as discovering what happens after the end of this book. So, I am looking forward to continuing this series, because it shows a lot of promise.
I was given the chance to read this book by the author and chose to review it.
This was well written, had enough action to make it a page turner. Thomas is just trying to survive after the virus killed lots of people. He wants a promotion, but his biggest concern is taking care of the people he loves. Great read-a different take on post-apocalypse.
This is very cool and calculated. Trying to bring society back in line after a virus that decimates the population. It shows what could happen in various ways when society breaks down. Thomas has his issues but he has a sound heart and does what needs to be done. Saving others from a bad situation should always be a priority. The military jargon was correct for the most part and their procedures. I am looking forward to the other books that come out in this series.
This is a good story but you have to read it carefully to keep track of who is speaking. The story is good with a plot that is like a black ops plot. The ending is sad in one way and happy in another way.
The good guys can not all survive and you will have to read the book to find out the ending.
This was a very good end of the world story. I spent a lot of time in the past year listening to books in this genre and am always on the lookout for something new. I was pretty excited to give this one a try. It is a really quick listen with plenty of action to keep the story moving forward. I am glad that I decided to take a chance on this book.
Illness has wiped out most of the population. There are still smaller groups trying to make a better world to survive in but there are other groups that have taken advantage of the situation. Thomas takes his responsibilities seriously. He takes care of a young boy, passing him off as his younger brother. He was in the military before the world fell apart and hope to gain the rank of soldier in his new group. He is put in charge of a mission that is important and dangerous.
This was a pretty exciting story with a lot of action. The mission wasn’t as straightforward as I first thought it might be. There were plenty of surprises along the way to keep things very interesting. There were some pretty horrible circumstances that he encountered in this story. Thomas was very smart and able to think through situations very quickly.
My only issue with the story is that there are a few sections of the book where Thomas has flashbacks to his life before. I did enjoy these parts but I thought that the transition to them could have been much stronger. It would have been nice to know that the narrative was jumping to a point in the past and I do wonder if it might have been indicated in some way in the written story. I tended to find myself wondering what was happening for a minute before I would realize that the story had shifted to one of Thomas’s memories.
Matthew Crow did a good job with the story. He isn’t my favorite narrator but I thought he handled the story well. I was not a fan of his female voices but this was really a very minor complaint. I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to his narration work again in the future.
I would recommend this book to fans of end of the world stories. I thought that this was a well-done story that kept me entertained from beginning to end. I wouldn’t hesitate to read more of Robert Wilson’s work in the future.
I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author/narrator via Audiobook Boom and have voluntarily left this review.
I really got into this story about what happens after a major flu just about decimated the human population.
Thomas is eyeing a promotion to soldier in order to be better able to take care of his “brother ” and is paired with Jommy to shut down a female slave camp run by the “Butcher “, who tries his nerves being a pain, but they form a bond.
I enjoyed the narrator and was rooting for the women’s rescue while worrying about Tom and James.
I received a copy of this audiobook from StoryOrigin for my honest review.
Life after humanity is almost wiped out, how do you start over? Thomas struggles to maintain his sanity and do what is needed. There is a clear PTSD struggle in this story. Flashbacks, seeing things that aren’t there, trying to keep the humanity within yourself. There is not a lot of context to this book. I would classify this as a great start to a good story. I feel it should be revisited and revised. I didn’t fully connect with the characters, but I feel the writing has promise.
Excellent read!
Loved the story line and characters. It was gripping and had plenty of twists and turns as you followed Thomas in the post-apocalyptic world. Great read.
This first book gives you a look into some of the darker side of people. Thomas is fighting for the chance to move up in a world where your next day isn’t guaranteed to be anything like you were used to. Laws are gone and rules change from place to place. This was written in a way that was easy to follow, understand, and visualize. It leaves with an opening into the next book in this series.
