Story
After finishing the Folk of Air series by Holly Black I was itching for another fae story to sink my teeth into, and this one delivered. I absolutely enjoyed the secrets, mysteries and quests in this book.
I will say that the plot waffled a bit in the middle. It felt like there was no clear direction and the characters just went in circles for a while. It picked up again toward the end and I need answers badly so sequel here I come.
Writing & Worldbuilding
The writing is the thing that really stood out to me in this book. It flowed so easily and made me actually forget that I was reading for a while. The worldbuilding also stood out. It was a lot of fun seeing the fae interact with their environment. We don’t get large info dumps through dialogue, but rather through how Ella and the rest interact with the world.
It was great seeing the fae use their powers, and there was a particular squirrel scene I just found hilarious. Seriously, if you need a fae fix after finishing the Folk of Air series, this is it.
Characters
Flint was by far my favourite character. Even though Ella is our protagonist, I really enjoyed Flint. He’s mischievous and loyal and I just love everything that comes out of his mouth.
The side characters in this book were just as fleshed out as the protagonist, which made it that much more enjoyable. I found that I actually cared about what happened to them, which is rare for me.
All in all, this was a really fun book to read and I definitely recommend it.
This is how a book should be wrote! Characters that jump right out of the book and getting you wondering what’s next. A young girl that saw things at a home for troubled kids that came out at night, scary and tomorrow she would be 16. Oh, what happened on her birthday when she found out, she wasn’t crazy but maybe the world was. Meeting strange beings and learning things that happened before will bring a memory of before. Good reading!
An Unexpected Fantasy Twist Beyond Wishes I loved this!!! This was so very unique and kept me captive until it’s very last word!! Now my biggest wish is that the next comes along quicky!! I both loved and was utterly frustrated alongside Ella as she sought out answers to just who she is. I found Flint to be totally immature but it added to his character’s presence perfectly! He is the trickster and is bound to serve his oath. Knight is still an enigma and we see bits and pieces in his icy manner that he will play a part in Ella’s future no matter what his words say. I’m not sure that all of the villians have stepped onto the stage and I can’t wait to see just what Ms. Stryker has plotted for us next! I can’t get enough of the fae and this absolutely gave me a new world to fall in love with. If you love young adult, this will be a favorite! The writing was phenomenal as was the world building! This was absolutely unputdownable for me! I throughly enjoyed my time reading this! The banter and the bickering and the heart tugging moments have made this truly memorable!!
A whole new world, and whole new war. Ella might find things a bit overwhelming but it’s a total reading pleasure to see how she deal with it all in Anne Stryker‘s Day of Wishes and Wonder (Starlight Fae Book 1). This is a truly well written tale and I wonder how I’ve missed this author before, and wish I hadn’t (sorry but I couldn’t resist phrasing things that way – though the sentiment is real enough). Totally fun, this is an easy book to recommend.
Who doesn’t love faery courts, and a prince??? Bring it on!!
