Finished “Daughters of the Bride” that I received as an ARC from the author. Love it…and have loved all Susan Mallery books. If you are looking for a light, weekend read…this one is great!
Three daughters, each completely different from the others. While planning their mother’s wedding, they are forced to take a look at their own love lives and their relationship with their mother as well as each other. Their mother, caught up in her own world, trying to make a living and keep food on the table has no idea that she neglected the emotional needs of each of her daughters. She thought she was doing the best she could. She assumed they would know that. And that in turn affects how each daughter relates to the men in their lives. There is a lot of healing to do. The author does an excellent job of defining love and walking each character through the healing process in their relationships.
I always love Susan Mallery novels but for some reason it took me over a year to read and finish this one. I started it and couldn’t get into it so I put it down and months later came back to it. It’s probably me and not the book. I have been so busy that sadly I haven’t been able to read as much.
Once I got into it I did enjoy it. There are three daughters…my favorite daughter was Rachel. I enjoyed her on and off again relationship with her husband. I liked that she was trying to get over her relationship with him but certain things have a way of pulling you back in sometimes. My least favorite was Sienna because of her attitude at times. Once I read more of the novel I understood why she acted the way she did. Overall I thought it was an enjoyable read. I would recommend it to others.
Daughters of the Bride by Susan Mallery is so full of love and family… Susan never fails to deliver a heart warming story.
I received this book free for an honest review and I absolutely loved it. This book is a family oriented book. This book was unique in the fact that usually with any storyline you’ll get the point of view of the main couple that the story is about. With this book being about a family of sisters coming together you get all three of their perspectives and you see how each of them handles their lives. Now I have to admit I didn’t like the way it would go back and forth between each sister I would have rather it stayed on each sister until their story was finished. I still absolutely loved the story though I was just impatient to find out what happened with each sister and it seemed just as it was getting really good it would transition to another sister and you would have to start over. This was a beautiful story of how a family can come together in the most unlikely places and they can get through any situation as long as they have each other. I would highly recommend this book to anyone Susan Mallory has brought another beautiful story to life. Also you will be pleasantly surprised to see some brief moments with other characters from some of her previous books.
I really enjoyed this fun tale of sisters and their mother . Great family dynamics of how sisters and their mom learn about each other all over again. Secrets have been kept and are now being revealed. Lots of laughs and angst as their widow mother plans her wedding.
** spoiler alert **
Daughters of the Bride by Susan Mallery.
The book tells the story of planning the wedding of Maggie and Neil she is the mom of three daughters by the youngest Courtney.
It has the love story of Courtney and Quinn which has lots of twist and turns. Courtney keeps secrets from her family that end up hurting her sisters and her mom. The story of Rachel and Greg and their son Josh, as they realize that they are still in love even though they have divorced. and the story of Sienna and her ex fiancé Jimmy. she does get engaged to David which is a mistake from the beginning. I liked the fact that this book told 4 love stories in one book. it was very easy to read and I recommend it to anyone looking for a romance with a little substance because Susan Mallery develops the characters in such a way that you feel like you could know them if you ran into them on the street. I truly love a book by Susan Mallery.
Favorite Quotes:
She was battling an extra twenty pounds and the constant fear that she was the ‘before’ picture, while everyone around her was an after.
You look stunning. I should hate you. The fact that I don’t is a testament to my excellent character.
He confused her and excited her and challenged her. Basically he was catnip and she just wanted to purr and rub all over him.
I hate to say this, but I’m feeling better. What a nightmare. What if everything they say about exercise is true? What if I have to do it forever?
We all have secrets. It’s just yours are more interesting than most.
I had a mean girl moment. It was fantastic, although she was disappointing. She didn’t tell me I was ugly or that you were using me. Doesn’t she watch teen movies? There’s a way to do that sort of thing right.
My Review:
Daughters of the Bride was a delightful surprise and a treat – from start to finish. I did not expect to find such a beautifully packaged, well crafted, multi-layered, clever, and keenly insightful study of family dynamics. The characters were well drawn, endearing, and while deeply flawed and at times disappointingly so, they remained likable – for the most part. The writing was smart, amusing, endlessly entertaining, and totally engaging. I enjoyed each daughter although I truly favored one significantly more. Each of the three daughters carried a different personal misery, sense of failure, and secret insecurity – although they each attempted to present themselves as being unruffled and happy in their lives. Their family relationships were despairingly askew and always had been, but were now worse than ever with increased exposure to one another while planning their Bridezilla of a mother’s second wedding, and no one was willing to address their herd of elephants.
The storyline was entertaining yet relevant and was comprised of characters with real-world problems. I reveled in the humorous and witty rapid-fire banter the characters engaged in, particularly Quinn and Courtney, I just adored them – individually and as a couple. I also found the premise of the book to be unique, with the bride being a mature woman of adult daughters. Wedding planning is always tricky with stress and chaos being the norm, no matter how meticulously planned, and this one was no exception to the rule.
Another great read from Susan Mallory.
Love Susan Mallery when I need a relaxing read to “make the world go away”! Some days I just need a “Happily Ever After” well written story to soothe my soul! You’ll giggle; shake your head in disbelief; and lose yourself in Mallery’s world — with a smile on your face!
Fun, easy to read story about sisters with their differences.
It’s been awhile since I’ve read a stand-alone book let alone a Susan Mallery one. I’m still reading the “Fool’s Gold” series and have read the “Buchanans” and “Blackberry Island” series. I was saving this book until sometime in July to listen to and I wasn’t disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book to the point that I even laughed out loud in certain places. The description of the book of each daughter, “The Misfit”, “The Free Spirit” and “The Cynic” had me very interested. I’m from a family with four daughters and the oldest and I wonder how people would describe each of us. This story revolves around three grown daughters whose mother is getting married for the second time after 24 years as a widow. I’m not going to ruin the story by inserting spoilers but what makes the book so interesting is the characters. The Mom “Maggie” for me is the typical Bridezilla and we were suppose to have sympathy for her because of her backstory. I found her to be neglectful to her daughters and very selfish. I did like Maggie’s Fiancé he was a really stand-up guy but Maggie not telling her daughters his work status seemed odd! I listened to the audio version of this book and read it in one day because I couldn’t put it down. The drama with Courtney & Joyce, Courtney & Quinn then Rachel & Greg and Sienna & David just kept you turning the pages. I do wish Susan had given us a wrap-up of what happened to Erica’s cousin, that situation was left up in the air. Overall, this was a great summer read and I’m glad I own it to read again next year.
Susan Mallery tells the story of 3 adult daughters and their mother. The mother is going to get married and thus the story unfolds as the bride and her daughters get ready for mom’s wedding. The different lives weave together to make for an outstanding tale of family and love with a light humorous touch and a strong feeling of family and their cloudy vision of one of their own. Sisters can grow up and become responsible without it being obvious to others.
Good book about intricacies of family relationships
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were realistic and likable in their imperfection. Quick read.
loved this book!
