There will be plenty of time for me to beat him soundly once I’ve gotten what I came for. Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map–the key to a legendary treasure trove–seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship. More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has … ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.
In Daughter of the Pirate King, debut author Tricia Levenseller blends action, adventure, romance, and a little bit of magic into a thrilling YA pirate tale.

This book was amazing! It grabbed me on the first page and clung on long after the last. It was a great historical fiction that had plenty of action and lots of surprises. It even had a tinge of romance. Definitely heading towards that top of my list!
Well, I can say I’m absolutely surprised. I did not have any luck with YA fantasies so far. I mean, okay, I’ve read a few ok ones, but I’ve never felt the surge to add them to my list of favorite books. But DotPK changed the way I’m looking at this genre from now. As much as I had a difficult time getting into the story, it quickly gained my full attention and I read it in one sitting.
I loved the easy way the story was flowing. It was like I’ve been sitting on the Night Farer with Alosa. Why the hell we don’t have more pirate stories? I totally dig this whole pirate thing.
I really liked that this book doesn’t have the annoying melodrama and love triangle section. Levenseller did an amazing job creating a dark, yet somehow bright atmosphere and I think it was the perfect way to lead this story.
What I totally adored was Alosa’s absolute cockiness. This girl is something else! At first, she may seem a bit of an extra, but as the story unfolds, you can’t help but fall for her. And Riden! Damn, he’s fine! I may be a cougar, but I need him for myself!
Gosh, I can’t wait to read the sequel! Luckily, I already have it on my shelf!
You know I don’t think I have ever read a book about pirates, and a lady pirate at that!
Alosa, the Princess, the daughter of the pirate king..a fearsome opponent but still with a heart…. ‘And while I can kill evil men without guilt, the suffering of others pains me as well as it does them.’
Fake captured by a rival group of pirates, Alosa meets Riden on her secret mission. And pirate jaunts ensue!
Well shiver me timbers. (Sorry about that but I just had to add something cheesy in my review!) this was a fab read and I am so looking forward to the next book. I really hope we get to see more of the Pirate King though!
Alosa is fiery and strong and clever. I laughed so many times and flew through this book. Didn’t want it to end. Can’t wait for the next one!
Great for fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and Treasure Island. Fast-paced and character driven, high stakes, romantic, strong female lead.. this is a fun read for anyone who enjoys YA!
LOVED IT!!
I liked the world a lot. The writing style wasn’t my favorite but the story was good enough to make up for it. FYI, It did have some elements that may be triggering for some. (mention/threat of rape, harm to children, abuse).
3.5 stars I enjoyed this, I really did, but it didn’t quite reach the potential I believe it had. That being said, this was an entertaining pirate novel and I loved the imaginary world the author created. I really liked the characters. Alosa was fearless and stubborn and Riden has this more gentle side (cause he really is a good guy even though he’s a pirate and part of a cruel world). While I felt the pacing a little off during her initial time aboard the enemy ship, the end of this novel picked up speed for me and I definitely jumped right into the sequel as it left me interested enough to continue on.
Content: does contain some violence and mild language. There is no sex, however; there is reference to loose morals (nothing actually on the page).
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. A little pirate based fiction was a pleasant change to my normal genres. The main character had a great voice, and the plot, while somewhat intricate, kept me turning the page to read more. And I didn’t even see the reveal about the main character’s heritage coming. Love being surprised like that. Can’t wait to pick up the sequel to see how this story ends!
LOVED IT.
This book has been on my to read list for a while now and I am really happy to have finally read it. I don’t think there was anything I didn’t like about this book. It had an original and action filled plot, various colorful characters, a spunky and clever lead character, Pirates, myths and magic. Best of the best though, the romance.
Daughter of the Pirate King had so much to offer and all of it blew me away. The thing I liked most of the story though was Alosa. Characters with attitude usually tends to annoy me, often crossing the line into obnoxious, but Alosa’s spunkiness and the “takes no crap from no one” attitude was perfectly balanced and brought such a unique personality to the book as well as the romance. I lived for her and Riden’s quibbles and fights, and even though this book wasn’t so heavy on the romance genre it really built an intriguing relationship between the two. The tenseness, the games and secrets as well as the whole being enemies and her a captive drew me in like nothing else can. Adding her “special powers” and what she was into the mix and I was glued to the pages.
And it was not only the romance that had me invested. Overall the complex and original plot developed the story amazingly well with such variety in characters, like cold and calculating Draxen, superstitious and friendly Enwyn and drunk and sorrowful Kearan, and had very elaborate schemes and twists making the story perfectly unpredictable and exciting. I am all in for book two with everything the story brought as well as the ending. I can’t wait to see how Alosa’s and Riden’s adventure together (hopefully) will continue.
It was entertaining….
Bad ass feminist adventure powerful protagonist well developed relationships between characters
I’m not the best at reviews but this isn’t my first delve into the siren genre – and while I’ve read a few, this book is my favorite! I love Tricia’s take on lore and love the characters! It’s everything I’ve already highlighted: witty, entertaining and action packed!
This is a fun read! Love Alosa and her crew. Can’t wait to read the next book “Daughter of the Siren Queen”.
Loved it!
A female swashbuckling pirate, snarky and deadly. The daughter of the pirate king is fast paced and keeps you reading well into the night. Finished it in 2 days and can’t wait to read book 2. Loved it!
Definitely a true teen read, this one is full of strong females and an uncovering of identity.
This pirate is willing to do a risky job to prove how good she is, then discovers something that really, truly pisses her off.
I loved the main character and her crew, I liked the tease of romance, I liked the piracy and magic.
Sometimes books makes the plt too complicated. I didn’t need this. This was a straightforward story to follow, one I happily zipped right throughout without needing a flow chart to remember who’s who and why everything is happening. A fun ride!
If you like adventure and a swoony romance, Daughter of the Pirate King is a super fun romp!
Note: this is a pirate novel. There’s quite a bit of blood and murder. I loved it. You might not.
Don’t like the ended and lack of clarity with the relationships of the characters
