Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.
In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.
And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.
Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or … with monsters that may or may not be real; she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”; she speaks many languages — not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.
When one of the strangers — beautiful, haunted Akiva — fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Very interesting. Curious to see how all this is going to work out in the next two books.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is a Young Adult paranormal romance. An age old plot of star crossed lovers evolves into a brilliant imaginative tale. Characters are complex, descriptions of places and especially beings are so vividly painted that they come alive on the page. An excellent well crafted absorbing book.
Wonderful world building and evocative writing. Loved it!
This story has everything I usually enjoy: gothic aspects, demons, chimera, magic, romance and mystery. So why three stars? Well the beginning is wonderful, the characters are amazing and so unique, the story is well paced and intriguing until about 70% in and then I just list most of my interest. Not in the story but the way it was presented. I …
This book will also keep you on the edge of your seat. It was one I had a hard time putting down.
this is a extremely exiting book about the love of an angel and a devil. but the angel is a different angel then you know and the devil is a different devil. after you finish this book you will be glad that there are two more books in this theory
I love these books. Karou is such a fantastic character and in a world where angels are the enemy and monsters are the heroes, you have to read on …
I absolutely love this trilogy. I think I’ve almost found a new favourite series. Laini’s world and character building is spectacular!
Read Laini Taylor, they told me, you’ll love it…and I now know that everyone was right and I’m kicking myself for being so slow!
Loved this from the first page to the last. Incredible world building, believable fully formed characters with sound motives for their actions, and such a unique twist on the angels and demons trope.
This is how YA …
I really appreciate all the details the author share in this book it really makes you enter into the book, leaving the story right beside its characters.
Exquisite prose. Incredible world-building. After reading this book, Laini Taylor instantly became a favorite author.
Release all pre conceived thoughts and let your imagination have at it!
The characters are so easy to love.
An interesting take on angels and monsters where strong bonds and the growth of the characters help to change the world
Every once in a while a book comes along that makes me look at all the other five star books on my shelves and want to knock a star off each; a book that’s so good, I wish Goodreads had an additional ‘gold’ star; a special star, that when you click it, Goodreads asks ‘Are you certain it was that good?’ ‘Was it really epic enough to warrant this …
The writing of this story was clean and intelligent, but the twists and turns through the plot made it impossible to put down. Every other chapter seemed to reveal a new point that had me going, “What?! No way!! What is going on here??” All leading up to a satisfying conclusion that still leads well into the second book. A pleasantly surprising …
This story brought on a masterful level of storytelling, I would equate to my favorite author Brandon Sanderson. The story seems simple; Seraphim are in a never ending war with Chimera that no one really seems to remember how it got started, but neither are willing to negotiate for peace. Then one day, a chimera makes a choice that starts the path …
I was on the fence for a very long time on whether or not I wanted to read this book. I kept going back and forth and finally, I took it off my Want to Read list about a year ago and thought I was never looking back. Well then in walks Caz from Little Book Owl. I really like her taste in books and when she was like who wants to read these books …
“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.”
My Review:
Audio:
The narrator, Khristine Hvam, was absolutely excellent. She read beautifully and the tone of her voice was a perfect fit. All the characters were uniquely portrayed and I found nothing at all to complain about as far as the audio went.
