Interview with the Author
Q – So, what makes The Chronicles of Hawthorn series special?
A – It’s actually a mix of things. When I chose to write these books, I wanted to create a diverse story that reminded me of the kind of fantasy, magic, and adventure books I like to read. My top picks are usually epic fantasy novels, any of the witch and wizard best sellers, and, of course, books featuring magic, spells, and potions with a dash of humor. Basically, anything with a fantasy genre flavor and a fast-paced style gets my click.

– The Shadow Calls (Book 3)
– Taken by the Shadow (Book 4)

– Secrets of Kabara (Book 6)

I have throughly been captivated by this series since I read The Courage of Kahu and have eagerly anticipated the next book to continue the series.
Rue is a fantastic story teller!! I know in the book at the end it says she had thought of this story for ten years and I am so very glad she has the ability to craft such a story that leaves the reader hungry for more!!
I have eagerly awaited each new book in the series so I can be under Rues magickal spell!!
Her vivid imagination and ability to write such an epic series just astounds me. The pages just fly by and I am finished with the book when I think I have just begun it.
Please do yourself a favor and begin this series yourself. I can guarantee you will also fall under Rue’s magickal spell! Reading her books is such a pleasure-I know it took so much time to “flesh out” the story and get it just right before having it released but as a reader it is just a pure joy to read.
I wish everyone would read this series because we all face decisions daily and we become what path we chose to accept-for good or bad!
This series will give you smiles and tears as you read of the characters struggles and the hardships they face. I know my biggest tears will be with the final page of the next book because that will be the end of this series. But the wonderful thing about great books is that you can read and reread them again and again and I will certainly do that with this series so I can fall under Rue’s spell once again!
I am still loving this series and am very sad that it is almost over. This book really set the stage for the final epic battle and I cannot wait to see what happens and how bright Flynn will shine. I really enjoyed the fact that Flynn is becoming a strong and self reliant leader in this book, but I also love the fact that her mother finally seems to come around to her side and realize what an incredible human Flynn is. Flynn has a wonderful heart, and she finally has the support of her village and family that she has deserved her entire life. I believe that good things will come for her and I cannot wait to find out how it all ends.
The excitement and magic continue!
In the last book (Secrets of Kabara) Magdalena, the Shadow Witch, had given birth to Roselle who was far from a normal child. In fact, she was referred to as the “Monster Child”. Roselle had taken the magical amulet of Makutu and flown away on her trusted Sky Shadow, Piri. As the story opens, Roselle, now at only an age of two moons, appears to be at least one solar return in maturity and size. However, mentally, she is still a child.
While not a fan of fantasy, somehow this series really hooked me from the first book. I am continually fascinated with how Rue brings these fantastical characters and settings alive for me. I am baffled by how her mind works to create the kingdoms of Aotearoa and Southeil and their inhabitants.
Flynn Hawthorn, the child of prophecy, continues her quest to reunite the Book of Shadow with the Book of Light and bring peace to the land, even as the Shadow Witch plots to destroy her and all her helpers. As her world seems to cave in around her, she is unsure of whom she can trust. She lashes out in anger as she fears her closest confidant, her brother Rowan, is in love with her enemy Flynn, and her daughter is “who knows where’ with the amulet she desperately needs.
The Aotearoa kingdom has characters that I have grown to love. Dear Hazel, the best friend anyone could possibly have. Sweet Po – who has grieved over the death of his mother and now seeks to take her place on the coven. Impudent Zip and his gentle cousin Lupine – faeries of the Atahu Forest. Oturu – Flynn’s beloved falcon. This book introduces a new character – Twisty, a Sky Shadow with a deformed leg who befriends Roselle. I just couldn’t help falling for him.
Throughout the seven books, Flynn has matured, thanks to lessons from her friends, from Rowan, and from her father. Her impulsive behavior has damaged her reputation and now she seeks to restore it. As Flynn and her new found father slowly get to know each other his secrets come out, creating even more mystery surrounding him. Flynn’s maturity is tested as, like most children, she would like to see her parents reunited. But her mother, the High Priestess, has been in a relationship with another member of their community.
I was delighted with some of the antics of Roselle. She is, after all, just a child. A child with a powerful magical amulet, thus wielding a power that can have very dangerous consequences. Will she use the power to help her mother destroy the Light? Or will she remember that Flynn was nice to her during Flynn’s imprisonment in the Southeil kingdom and decide to use the power to help her? Or will she strike out on her own?
In only 180 pages Rue gives us adventure, intrigue, romance, friendships, family, magic, and betrayal. Each chapter provides another dose of adrenalin making it nearly impossible to put down. As I neared the end of the last chapter I already found myself anxiously awaiting the next installment. But then I encountered the words that I was not at all prepared for – “The saga ends in…The Last Priestess.” No! Book 8 is the end of the saga??! Can’t we have a book 7.1, 7.2…
