Edgar Award-winner Harlan Coben brings us his most astonishing—and deeply personal—novel yet. And it all begins when Myron Bolitar’s ex tells him he’s a father . . . of a dying thirteen-year-old boy. Myron never saw it coming. A surprise visit from an ex-girlfriend is unsettling enough. But Emily Downing’s news brings him to his knees. Her son Jeremy is dying and needs a bone-marrow … bone-marrow transplant—from a donor who has vanished without a trace. Then comes the real shocker: The boy is Myron’s son, conceived the night before her wedding to another man.
Staggered by the news, Myron plunges into a search for the missing donor. But finding him means cracking open a dark mystery that involves a broken family, a brutal kidnapping spree, and the FBI. Somewhere in the sordid mess is the donor who disappeared. And as doubts emerge about Jeremy’s true paternity, a child vanishes, igniting a chain reaction of heartbreaking truth and chilling revelation.

Not the best Myron Bollitar and not even close to most of Coben’s standalones. The humor is often forced–especially between Myron and his mother. An unduly complicated plot vs an elegantly complex plot also detracts. That said, the three intertwined “father” themes tie together nicely. Myron’s dilemma when he learns he has a son–by a woman he can’t stand–adds a deeper dimension to his confusion. He’s “recovering” from the break-up of his long-time romantic relationship, but he may finally have met the right woman. Win, Esperanza, and the Band of Misfits play lower-keyed roles in this book, but the shoot-out scene with them borders on the ridiculous. All this aside, Coben still delivers a good read. Myron remains a hero.
Coben’s voice was, for me, very different in this book. It felt personal. The tragedy of a dying child, the race against time, the constant pressure and suspense were masterful, and it felt very, very real. I’ve long been a huge fan of Coben’s writing (haven’t were all?) but this book has a much more intimate feel. Don’t read it if you’re planning to do anything else for the next couple of days!
I love the whole series of these books featuring Myron Bolitar and Win.

I love this author, his characters are so unique and his books always have an ending that you do not see coming. A glass of wine and one of his books makes a lovely evening.
Entertaining, as usual.
Typical Harlan Coben—-i.e. very good). Although I am not a fan of this series (Myron Bolitar) …I prefer Spencer and Hawk),. this was a really good read with a very surprising ending.
