Overall rating: 5
Intense. Riveting. At first, I was at a standstill with the darkness and foreboding. The hunter made me cringe. This author led me down the hunters tale and the farther I went, the more confused I felt. The hunter is dark, and vicious, yet I just can’t help but route for his success. He is a hero but a villain at the same time, or just seems to be. Once again, I found myself glued to this one book, knowing the other just have to wait. Book one did the job perfectly, guaranteeing book 2 to be loaded shortly. A definite win -win. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
I’ve been reading books by Andy for quite awhile now and have always been impressed by his wordsmith skills. I fell in love with his Queen of Thieves series and read a few other of his “dark assassins” books to glean off the knowledge that Andy really enjoys writing about lost protagonists with hearts of gold. In the Hero of Darkness series #1, we are treated into the life and mind of the Hunter of Voramis, a prominent figure in a few of Andy’s other titles.
Darkblade Assassin is true in it’s word that the Hunter, while much misunderstood and feared, is also someone with a very dark past. Why I think this is, is the fact that the Hunter relies heavily on his worldly fighting skills, his inability to be killed, and his lost memories. Snippets of his past resurfaces now and then in the Hunter’s mind and while he survives in a very dark world of debauchery and degradation, he is also desperately trying to find out why he has so much power. All he knows is that he has his trusty ally-blade, Soulhunger with him at all times, delving “justice” to those who truly deserves it. The Hunter has a personal code to which he lives by – do not kill innocents and only those who have gruesomely hurt others.
But the Hunter is more than just a hired assassin. There is something uniquely innocent about him that makes him truly likeable. While he may be deemed as a ruthless killer, something in him drives him to kill and not just for the sake of death either. His life force is irrevocably tied to Soulhunger which makes it all the more interesting to both the Hunter and the reader. The Hunter himself doesn’t know why his life feeds on Soulhunger and why his blade needs to feed on the blood and life forces of the victims. But after years of living this way, he has somehow just dealt with it.
Now to get into how I felt about the story itself. According to Andy, Darkblade Assassin is a re-branding of sorts of his previous Hunter stories. In Darkblade Assassin, the Hunter is the main character but there are also many supporting characters to move the story along. There are the innocents of course that he tries to protect, and the ruthless, evil beings that pop up throughout the story making it hard for the Hunter to truly get rid of the evil in his world. While he’s on his missions to get rid of the people he’s hired to kill, he also encounters the even darker forces that are at work in his city. There is definitely more than one mystery in Darkblade Assassins and we are treated to some highlights from the Hunter’s previous works. However, I feel that unless you are somewhat familiar with the Hunter and his entire universe, you might be scratching your head a bit on some of the names of the characters, places, and situations.
The world building of Darkblade Assassin is phenomenal. There are quite a lot of descriptive prose on the Hunter’s world and the cities full of debauchery, filth, and depravity. But there is also disguised beauty within the innocents that he tries to protect, in particular Farida, the little waif who he rescued when she was an infant. Andy’s characters are also wildly described, with intricate details of how they look and act popping up throughout the story. I am quite impressed at how Andy describes the Hunter, but then again, the Hunter is one of Andy’s most favorite characters. You can tell right off how well Andy researches his characters, the world he writes about and all the fighting techniques and mutilated extremities. It’s like watching a very gruesome horror movie in certain parts of the book!
I won’t get too much into the story as it might contain spoilers and reading other reviews you’ll probably get a detailed idea of Andy’s writing abilities. But I will say that if you like reading about very descriptive fighting techniques, blood, gore, and body parts being destroyed, you’ll probably enjoy reading this book. But also know that within all the blood and gore, there is a fascinating story behind the Hunter and why he does what he does. In other words, there is more to the Hunter than meets the eye.
Thank you, Andy for the ARC!
I couldn’t put this book down and when I did, I moved right on to the next. The Hunter is a mysterious, John Wick like, character whose backstory is as intriguing as the suspense of what is coming next. This book is the gateway into Andy’s world of Einan, with overlapping spin offs that seamlessly integrate into one larger beautiful story!
Wow! Darkblade Assassin was a thrilling read that fires you up and ignites the darkness within! A wild, heart-pounding ride that has you gripping the edge of your seats and won’t let you go until the final plunge! It was beautifully written and wonderfully dark!
The Hunter has now been added to my list of favorite antiheroes! A dark voice whispering in his ear, compelling him to kill…to feed, a mysterious past he cannot remember, and abilities no one should be able to possess…all of it…just brilliant!
Buckle your seatbelts! This ride has only just begun!!
Very interesting! Little is as it first appears in this tale of an assassin with a unique blade and dark reputation.
