National Readers’ Choice Awards finalist in Romantic SuspenseDanger once again laps at the shores of Barkley Sound, the Graveyard of the Pacific… clear as it is insistent: she’s in danger and Brent Carver, the man with whom he shared a prison cell for five years, is the only person she should turn to for help. With nowhere else to go and with her father’s killer on her trail, Anna flees to what she hopes is safety.
Tucked into the west coast of Vancouver Island, Brent Carver’s isolated home hasn’t seen many visitors. And his friend’s daughter is the last person he ever expected to grace his doorstep. She’s in trouble, and he can’t deny her protection…just as he can’t deny his attraction to the independent beauty. As their passion sparks into flame, the perfect storm brews off the coast of his island home, bringing with it a sadistic killer hunting Anna and the secrets she’s come close to uncovering.

Brent is an ex-con who served twenty years in jail for killing his father. He’s a recluse, hateful, and doesn’t like people. He’s been out of jail for four years and one night a woman shows up. Anna got a call from her father telling her to run, he had some bad people after him and they would be after her. He told her to go to the only person he trusted, Brent. They were inmates for five years in prison. He had been accused of stealing money. Anna is a schoolteacher and is ready for summer until she gets that call and then the police tell her her father committed suicide by falling on train tracks. Anna doesn’t trust men and she sure doesn’t trust an ex-con. Brent doesn’t want anyone in his house but Anna’s dad was his best friend and he’d do anything for him and now Anna too. As they start running for their life and trying to figure out where Anna’s dad sent her a package, Brent realizes having someone who cares for him isn’t so bad.
Excellent story with sex, fast paced action, and suspense. It’ll get your heart racing and it’ll have you cheering them on. I could not put this book down, it had me on the edge of my seat.
unexpected, broken characters, redemption
Fabulous book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Great characters in Anna and Brent with one of the nastiest villains who is on their tail. The plot is so detailed and intertwined, I can’t begin to describe it simply. All I can say is if you like romantic suspense and adventure…..read this book!! It’s a great complement to Dangerous Waters. It is a standalone, but I would recommend reading both to gain a full understanding of all of the characters involved. Toni Anderson is quickly becoming my go to author. Very talented writer.
Dark Waters is the second book in Toni Anderson’s Barkley Sound series, and while I liked revisiting with the characters introduced in Dangerous Waters, this installment fell a bit short for me.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved Brent Carter and I was thrilled with the conclusion of his and Anna’s story, but I was very unhappy with all the angst and self-loathing the characters were steeped in for the better part of the book.
Brent is an ex-con who wants nothing more, since his release from prison, than to live off the grid for the rest of his days. Returning to his home town, he’s systematically built himself a fortress, around himself and his heart, managing to keep everyone at a distance until the daughter (Anna) of the man he befriended in prison, turns up on his doorstep needing help. A lot of help!
The story line is superb, the secrets and lies make the plot an intricate web of page turning delight, if only, the MCs could have displayed a bit more adult character this book would have been a complete slam dunk. In my opinion, of course.
Some readers will enjoy the over the top angst factor, it’s just not my jam. But again, it’s my opinion and should in no way deter you from enjoying this book. I love this author’s storytelling and urge you not to miss the chance to catch up with Finn and Holly from the previous book.
Too much romance for me. Will probably not read more. I enjoy the ‘mystery’ of the books, but not so much the romance.
