Harry Bosch teams up with LAPD Detective Renée Ballard in the new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.Detective Renée Ballard is working the night beat–known in LAPD slang as “the late show”–and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that … Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin.
Ballard can’t let him go through department records, but when he leaves, she looks into the case herself and feels a deep tug of empathy and anger. She has never been the kind of cop who leaves the job behind at the end of her shift–and she wants in.
The murder, unsolved, was of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally killed, her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy, and to finally bring her killer to justice. Along the way, the two detectives forge a fragile trust, but this new partnership is put to the test when the case takes an unexpected and dangerous turn.
Dark Sacred Night for the first time brings together these two powerhouse detectives in a riveting story that unfolds with furious momentum. And it shows once more why “there’s no doubt Connelly is a master of crime fiction” (Associated Press).

I have been reading his books for many years, and like when mew characters are developed.
great book….could not put it down
I have read all of Harry’s books. Michael writes a great character! Keep them coming.
Connelly is one of my favorites, but this isn’t his best work.
Exceptional for the genre.
Another winner from one of my favorite authors!
Love Harry Bosch!
Just love Ballard and Bosch working together, Ballard was very skeptical of Bosch at first but when she saw how he worked they got along. Bosch is not afraid to take chances it getting the evil bad guys off the street and will do almost anything to make it happen, when his life is on the line he only thought was for his daughter and how this would affect her. Michael Connelly melded the two stories so well in this book, he kept them separate but also kept the flow going. This book was very hard to put down.
Written by Michael Connelly – that says it all
If you are reading this review you are likely a fan of Harry Boschj already. If not, welcome aboard/
Good reading
Have read this book twice and enjoyed it both times. Love the character of Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard is a nice addition. Also read The Late Show featuring Ballard.
All star writing from a pro, Michael Connolly.
Terrific book.
Well written as can be said for all Michael Connelly’s books. This book introduces a new character to the series in Renee Ballard who works the night shift at LAPD. Very interesting character and a different look from Harry Bosch who later teams up with Ballard. You will enjoy the read if you like Police novels.
Like all of the Bosch series, this was excellent.
I collect books by Michael Connelly. He’s one of the few mystery writers whose writing improves with each new release, and I’m happy to say Dark Sacred Night exceeds expectations. The title, taken from a line in Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World,” has multiple meanings in the crime noir book, which, in typical Connelly fashion, goes beyond police procedural into complex character study. That old favorite Harry Bosch meets new favorite Renee Ballard is serendipity for the reader who loves them both. The authentic plot, the human touches, and the eloquent prose go down like a smooth brandy, leaving us with a similar warmth and buzz.
Loved it
I can’t get enough of Bosch. The show as well.
Great book
