Harry Bosch teams up with LAPD Detective Renée Ballard in the new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.Detective Renée Ballard is working the night beat–known in LAPD slang as “the late show”–and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that … Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin.
Ballard can’t let him go through department records, but when he leaves, she looks into the case herself and feels a deep tug of empathy and anger. She has never been the kind of cop who leaves the job behind at the end of her shift–and she wants in.
The murder, unsolved, was of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally killed, her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy, and to finally bring her killer to justice. Along the way, the two detectives forge a fragile trust, but this new partnership is put to the test when the case takes an unexpected and dangerous turn.
Dark Sacred Night for the first time brings together these two powerhouse detectives in a riveting story that unfolds with furious momentum. And it shows once more why “there’s no doubt Connelly is a master of crime fiction” (Associated Press).

Not many authors can match Connelly. Love to read him!!!!!!
Harry Bosch. That should be all that needs saying! You’ll not find another author who is as thorough about police procedure and get keeps it from being dry toast. Read it.
Another great offering from Michael Connelly. Draws you in and holds you until the very end.
Two of my favorite law enforcement professionals, Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard, working together!
Michael Connelly is a master story teller.
Loved it. He never disappoints.
*5 Stars*
Connelly has done it again. For a series and a character that has been around as long as Harry Bosch, you’d think things would start to get old. But they don’t. Connelly writes in such a way that he brings these characters to life, and he manages to throw me for a loop every. single. time.
In Dark Sacred Night, we get both Bosch and Ballard. We’ve met Ballard previously in the first novel for her series, The Late Show. Whilst working their own cases, Bosh and Ballard come together to work another one, and so we have a whole range of things going on.
Connelly manages to weave them all together in a way that isn’t confusing, and clearly explains what’s happening in theses stories. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel, and I look forward to more of these guys together in the future.
Everybody counts, or nobody counts.
As a teller of stories, Michael Connelly is a master. He pens some of the finest police procedurals ever written. His knowledge of investigative techniques, cop-speak, cop-think and his characters shines through on every page.
You become absolutely invested in every gripping tale. Almost to the point where you don’t want them to end!
In this outing, LAPD detective Renee Ballard meets former LAPD detective Harry Bosch, who is currently a reserve officer with the San Fernando Valley PD.
She becomes involved in cold case he’s working on. A young girl was murdered 9 years earlier and Harry promised the girl’s mother that he’d bring the killer to justice.
When Harry sinks his teeth into something he doesn’t let go. Neither does Renee.
They will work well together, which part of the joy of reading this book.
Bosch is also working a gang-related case that will put him in grave danger.
Ballard has interesting call-outs that are entwined into the story that pulls you along to a righteous and wholly satisfying conclusion.
No more details. That spoils the fun.
All Bosch is great.
I’m a fan of Harry Bosch.
Connely is always a good read.
All of Connelly’s Bosch books are great
Beginning of the series where the two MC work together. Encouraged me to continue following the series!
The story is creative but so heavily laced with unnecessary profanity and f-bombs. It becomes gratuitous and offensive after awhile. You walk away feeling assaulted.
Evert new Harry Bosch book is just as good as the last one. I have read them all.
4.5 stars rounded down to 4 stars.
This library book is another great police procedural by a master storyteller. Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch work together to solve two separate cold cases. Bosch is working to solve the 9 year old murder of a teenager. She is the daughter of a drug addict whose warning when he was undercover on a previous case saved his life. Bosch is also working on a cold case for the San Fernando Police Dept. The murder happened 14 years ago. The victim was a gang leader and did not rate as a high priority case. But Harry Bosch believes “that everybody counts or nobody counts.”
Ballard finds Harry going through a file cabinet in her office 1 night, even though he no longer works for the LAPD. She decides to work the case with him instead of turning him in.
Quote from a self appointed preacher who calls himself “John the Baptist.”
“Each night I count how many people took the Lord and Savior into their hearts. Each dark sacred night brings more souls to Christ.”
They do solve the cases, although 1 of them is almost killed. There are references to the various murders, and a couple of murders take place during the book. One of those murders was nasty, so probably not for cozy mystery fans.
I recommend reading these books in order, but this would work as a stand alone. I read this book in 3 days, even though it is 433 pages long. Connelly’s books are great reading!!
always a twist with ‘who done it’ Michael Connelly books are top rate.
Great book, as usual. Connelly is amazingly consistently excellent.
love every michael connelly book.
This is another winner for Harry Bosch as he is teamed up with a new partner on the night shift. Interesting dynamics in the character building and always a great detective story.
