Harry Bosch teams up with LAPD Detective Renée Ballard in the new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.Detective Renée Ballard is working the night beat–known in LAPD slang as “the late show”–and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that … Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin.
Ballard can’t let him go through department records, but when he leaves, she looks into the case herself and feels a deep tug of empathy and anger. She has never been the kind of cop who leaves the job behind at the end of her shift–and she wants in.
The murder, unsolved, was of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally killed, her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy, and to finally bring her killer to justice. Along the way, the two detectives forge a fragile trust, but this new partnership is put to the test when the case takes an unexpected and dangerous turn.
Dark Sacred Night for the first time brings together these two powerhouse detectives in a riveting story that unfolds with furious momentum. And it shows once more why “there’s no doubt Connelly is a master of crime fiction” (Associated Press).

Ballard and Bosch are a good partnership in solving this fifteen year old cold case. They definitely go above and beyond to get to the solution. I’m only sorry that these characters only live in fiction.
This is a solid addition to the series. The plot moves quickly and the story is interesting with a good investigation outlined to the climax and solution of the case. The audio is voiced by a man for Bosch and a woman for Ballard and they are both talented and portray the characters well. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes police procedural novels.
I loved this book. Michael Connelly is a great mystery writer. I have read all of Connelly’s books and have never been disappointed.
** Spoiler Alert **
I realize Bosch is now in his 60s and that may explain why Connelly hasn’t written any new books lately strictly based on Bosch. However, it appears to me that this book explained why we haven’t seen anymore books based on Bosch and Bosch alone. Most likely, he will now only appear with Ballard as his new “partner”. That may keep me reading the Ballard series, but I’m not certain. I already have the third Ballard book and will definitely read it. Then I’ll make my decision.
Great new series that brings characters in from previous books.
Love Michael Connelly books
Not my favorite Connelly but still a decent read.
Never read a bad Connelley book!
Love the Harry Bosch books!
I’m a huge fan of Renee Ballard. Another tick in the WIN column for Michael Connelly.
This book is from one of my favorite authors. The introduction of a character that works along with Bosch was a good decision.
Michael Connelly is a master story teller. Now he has combined Bosch and Ballard into a really entertaining combination. By themselves they are really interesting characters. In fact I wish there would be more stand along Ballard books. You know Bosch as there are about a million books. ALL of them are great reads. If you have not read The Late Show go get it. Explains Ballard. Looking forward to the next book….
a fun police procedural
Love all his books
I love all Michael Connelly books, great police dramas.
Harry Bosch continues on with his new “partner” Renee Ballard in the LAPD
It is impossible to give a Michael Connelly book anything but 5 stars especially one with Harry Bosch. The new character, Renee Ballard, is clearly going to be an excellent replacement for Harry. I highly recommend the book.
If you are a fan of Harry Bosch, this is a must read.
Renee Ballard is nearly as good a character as Harry Bosch!
Love love love this Renee Ballard / Harry Bosch team. Love that Renee is strong and smart and a great cop. I love reading about Harry’s evolution post-cop days. Very much a book that resonates from an author I love. I’ve reread this a handful of times and it never gets old
