Harry Bosch teams up with LAPD Detective Renée Ballard in the new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.Detective Renée Ballard is working the night beat–known in LAPD slang as “the late show”–and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that … Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin.
Ballard can’t let him go through department records, but when he leaves, she looks into the case herself and feels a deep tug of empathy and anger. She has never been the kind of cop who leaves the job behind at the end of her shift–and she wants in.
The murder, unsolved, was of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally killed, her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy, and to finally bring her killer to justice. Along the way, the two detectives forge a fragile trust, but this new partnership is put to the test when the case takes an unexpected and dangerous turn.
Dark Sacred Night for the first time brings together these two powerhouse detectives in a riveting story that unfolds with furious momentum. And it shows once more why “there’s no doubt Connelly is a master of crime fiction” (Associated Press).

Classic MC with an intriguing new character. Nice to see a female lead from an all time great author. Can’t wait to see more of her.
Love Michael Connelly. This is obviously the first book of a new series with Bosch and Ballard as a team.
I love all of his books and this one that unites two strong characters as always is outstanding.
It is obvious that Connelly is moving away from his centric character, Harry Bosch. I mean, how much more can he write about the same old, same old? I surmise there are still a few stories left with Bosch, but Connelly is smart, looking for someone to replace that timeworn figure. He needs someone as smart and devious as Bosch, someone willing to bend the laws but not break them. He has chosen wisely. The interim stories with Bosch and Ballard are terrific. I think it will go on with the two of them partnering up for perhaps a half dozen more stories and then who knows what will happen. Bosch is the old master and it appears that he needs a lot of help in this story; conversely, she is still learning and also needs major help. Well done.
Run of the mill murder mystery kept me reading but nothing original or exciting. It was like watching the next pisode of an ok television series– no hesitation to go get a snack in the middle.
Unpredictable ending
Not up to par with Michael Connelly’s Bosch books. Won’t read another in the Bosch/ Ballard series.
I love the new partnership. Unfortunately, I picked out the culprit right away. Perhaps this was intended, because it did not make this story less interesting. Bosch always satisfies! I recommend this book
Another great Bosch story.
Loved everything!
Love all Michael Connelly books. Good charters. Action
This is the first book introducing Harry Bosch’s co-protagonist Renee Ballard. A very good read.
The book was good and the ending provides a possible sequel with Ballard and Bosch
If you haven’t read the Harry Bosch series and you enjoy procedurals then you should. One of the best out there. The fact that this book joins two of Connelly’s characters from his “universe” makes it all the better.
Bravo! Brilliant! Totally Entertaining!
I loved Dark Sacred Night! The new dynamic duo, Ballard and Bosch! They both are relentless in trying to solve an old case that Bosch has been working on. Looking forward to the next season on Bosch, where we get to see Michael Connolly’s latest bestseller unfold on screen wth Titus Welliver in charge as Bosch! Love them all! Well done Michael, you did it again!
Love all of his books!!!
I love the police procedural style of writing you get from the author. Lots of leads to follow and deductions seem plausible. This book felt more like and installment of a much longer story rather than a standalone novel. The earlier Bosch books seemed to stand on their own a little better in my opinion. Still, this was compelling and a fun read.
My friend Harry Bosch, like me, has aged since this collection began. He is questioning his mental and physical agility to continue his quest.
The infusion of Ballard’s youth and drive will allow Harry to continue to right all wrongs. Excellent read!
Michael Connelly is one of my all time favorite authors. This book did not disappoint. I love his characters and with each book you get to know them more. Each can stand alone and you don’t need to read them in any particular order either.
This one out does it’s self. With two cases going Bosch and Ballard have you guessing the whole time.
This writer really doesn’t need a good review to sell his books. But they are so good that I have to recommend his latest. It’s as interesting and action packed as usual. I like the team work by his old character Harry Bosch and new one, Renee Ballard. It was very hard to put down and I’m glad I bought the book when there was a sale of $10 off the regular price.
