Harry Bosch teams up with LAPD Detective Renée Ballard in the new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.Detective Renée Ballard is working the night beat–known in LAPD slang as “the late show”–and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that … Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin.
Ballard can’t let him go through department records, but when he leaves, she looks into the case herself and feels a deep tug of empathy and anger. She has never been the kind of cop who leaves the job behind at the end of her shift–and she wants in.
The murder, unsolved, was of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally killed, her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy, and to finally bring her killer to justice. Along the way, the two detectives forge a fragile trust, but this new partnership is put to the test when the case takes an unexpected and dangerous turn.
Dark Sacred Night for the first time brings together these two powerhouse detectives in a riveting story that unfolds with furious momentum. And it shows once more why “there’s no doubt Connelly is a master of crime fiction” (Associated Press).

Enjoy the entire Bosch series
Another good book, though not great. Author seems to be introducing a new character, who may function as a partner. Two parallel plots lasted the impact of one plot that is more fully developed.
Michael Connelly’s Dark Sacred Night is nothing short of mesmerizing , the authors story will grab your attention and hold it from the first suspense filled page through the last, a first rate mystery novel that you won’t want to put down into the wee hours of the night.
Always love Michael Connelly’s books, and this one does not disappoint. Harry Bosch is the best!
I have read all of Connelly’s books and find them intriguing, well-written, realistic and the characters have faults, as well as admirable traits. It is a nice slice of life in the criminal justice system and I love the detail. It is helpful for me to read about good cops, since I tend to see them only when someone of color is shot to death. I think there are more cops like Bosch and Ballard on the beat than those who seem to be biased. I am glad they are together in this book.
This was the first time that Connelly pairs his newest character, the intriguing young female detective with our favorite and longest running Connelly hero Harry Bosch, and what a wonderful match-up. It was suspenseful, fast-paced and highly original. Let’s look for more from these wonderful characters.
Another good book by this author.
If you want to know what it is like to live the life of a shift detective in a large city homicide unit, this is your ticket. It spends much more time than other murder mystery books on the inner workings of a police dept. You feel the pressure, highs and lows of these cops as they unravel crimes.
Retired Police Detective Harry Bosch working with new partner Detective Renee Ballard to solve a cold case.
Harry shows aging and retirement has not dimmed his skills as he attacks this case with the same never give up method. Just open the book, start reading, and you won’t put it down.
I’ve read all the Harry Bosch books and enjoyed them all. In this one, he works with Rene Ballard, also a lone wolf type of detective. They are working on a 9 year cold case, so evidence is hard to find. I enjoy the rather slow pace of his books and the detail included on how the actual work of police detectives is done. There is some action and suspense, but mostly it is about how the investigation evolves and how they put the pieces together. I like his characters because they are very real and well developed. You feel like they are people you know.
Love Michael Connelly’s books.
Love the new character. Looking forward to more.
Not what I expected from this author. I did not like it.
Being a Harry Bosch fan (I’ve read ALL of them) and having enjoyed the first novel with Renée Ballard (Night Shift), I was quite disappointed with this novel. This is not one of Michael Connelly’s better efforts.
Good but not his best. Even so it is great to ride along with Bosch and Ballard.
Another Michael Connelly Home Run scored in the Bosch series of mysteries. Bosch is one of my all-time favorite characters, and this new book lives up to the expectations that all the other books have led us to trust. The new character, the female cop, is one whose personality can stand up to Bosch’s and I expect the partnership will thrive in coming books–at least I hope so! A well-written, well-plotted enjoyable read, great for passing the time on a long winter’s dark and dreary (sorry) weekend. Good stuff. Thank you, Mr. Connelly, once again!
Not the best Bosch ever, but worth reading. The story line is classic Connelly, but the character interactions don’t get bosch and Ballard connected beyond just convenience.
I am partial to anything by Michael Connolly. This is a little different because he’s teamed with a new female partner. She’s a great character. I highly recommend this book.
Another Connelly great!
Connelly is THE go-to writer for readers who like detailed police procedurals, realistic dialogue and complex characters with complicated pasts.
