The first in the Lainey Boggs Mystery series by Nikolett Strachan, Dark Roasted to Death, is a great read and a wonderful start to a new cozy mystery series. Lainey Boggins is a features reporter for her small town of Aurora Heights but she is hoping to move up to harder hitting stories as soon as possible. When circumstances (writing a fluff piece about a coffee shop opening) place her in the right place at the right time, her editor gives her the chance to write about “real” news. As she stumbles through her first investigation, she manages to antagonize not only the local detective assigned to the case and the people she believes are suspects. With the help of her former high school crush and owner of the coffee shop, she finds the real perpetrator, solves her first case and writes her first front page articles. Not only did I like the story (even though it started off a little slow) but I really liked the characters and their interactions. I highly recommend this great first book as it’s a fantastic read.

Fun start to a new series. Great characters, nice small town, lovely storyline written with humor. Some touches of romance. Will definitely read more by this author
Lainey Boggins wants to be a reporter of big stories but so far in the small town of Aurora Heights, big news is a pie contest. Then she is asked to cover the opening of a cat coffee cafe of which her high school crush is the owner. Unfortunately for the cafe and the mayor, the mayor drops dead from anaphylactic shock right after drinking his coffee. Well she has her story or does she.
This is a great, humorous cozy mystery with romantic undertones. The characters are small town kooky, full of life and with great personalities that draw you into the story and into their lives. The mystery, if there is one (because only Lainey thinks there is more to it) is full of surprises, unexpected twist, numerous suspects and a multitude of clues, keep you engaged and interested until the end. Lainey is a great character with so much enthusiasm and potential that she will make a great reporter/amateur detective that should make for many more wonderful cozy mysteries. I am already looking forward to the next one.

I liked the characters in this book. It does kinda remind me of another series where there is a coffee shop that has a cat. I enjoyed the interaction of the characters and the storyline was a bit slow at first, but it picked up speed as it went along. This is a new author for me. Lainey wants to report grittier stories than pie contests and coffee shop openings. However, nothing much happens in Aurora Heights. That is, until the mayor’s seemingly allergic reaction opens up the possibility of conspiracy and murder. I enjoyed how Lainey sifted through clues and suspects to get at the truth, and how she grew as a character throughout the novel.

Lainey is an aspiring journalist, covering the fluffy pieces in her little town but hoping for more exciting stories. Her time comes when the mayor of the town dies almost in front of her at the opening of a new cafe.
The police rule the death as allergic reaction, but she knows that the coffee had been made especially for the mayor to not contain any allergens. So who is responsible for the death of the mayor?
A nice cozy mystery with a little thrill and a touch of romance, entertaining and well-written

This was a very well written cozy mystery. The author did a great job of distracting and misdirecting.
Lainey Boggins wants to be an investigative reporter, but is stuck doing fluffy community events pieces. Her boss assigns her to cover the opening of The Cozy Cat Cafe owned by her high school crush Dylan Sawyer. At the opening Mayor Lockwood does after drinking a coffee. The initial ruling is a fatal allergic reaction. Lainey has a feeling that something doesn’t add up and starts investigating the death with Dylan. She makes someone nervous because she gets a threatening note and her fires are slashed. She discovers the murderer and gets attacked. Highly recommend. Looking forward to more books in the series.

So much fun! An easy, entertaining read. I fell in love with Lainey and can’t wait for the next one to come.
When a well known mayor drops dead at a new coffee shop opening, it begs the question how popular the man really was- or really was not. Word about town was that his peanut allergy was nearly as well known as the mayor. So why not carry an epi pen?
Intrepid reporter Lainey Boggins is out to solve the mystery, and might be putting herself in the crosshairs of more than one potential killer along the way.
Who in this small town had a big enough hate to take the risk ? Turns out popularity is indeed relative.
Lainey might get lucky enough to survive and solve the case – with a little help from a few friends and a handsome detective.
Funny and mostly sweet read- except for the murderous vengeance.
