The first Virgil Flowers novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.“Virgil Flowers, introduced in bestseller Sandford’s Prey series, gets a chance to shine…The thrice-divorced, affable member of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), who reports to Prey series hero Lucas Davenport, operates pretty much on his own..”*He’s been doing the hard stuff for three … doing the hard stuff for three years, but he’s never seen anything like this. In the small rural town of Bluestem, an old man is bound in his basement, doused with gasoline and set on fire. Three weeks before, a doctor and his wife were murdered. Three homicides in Bluestem in just as many weeks is unheard of. It’s also no coincidence. And it’s far from over…

Dark Of The Moon is the first book in John Sandford’s Virgil Flowers series. I’ve read some of the books in the series, really liked them and so I’m starting with book one and going through in order. Sandford writes great descriptions of people and places. Virgil Flowers has a degree in environmental science. He likes the outdoors, he writes articles for hunting and fishing magazines and he’s an investigator for the Minnesota BCA, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Driving in southern Minnesota at night he sees the sky lit up by a fire. He heads in that direction and comes upon a raging fire at the home of Bill Judd, Sr. A millionaire despised by all who know him after driving his neighbors bankrupt twenty years earlier in a ponzi scheme. From there a case builds and multiple murders take place. Dark Of The Moon is a truly great read with wonderful characters and a very well written story.
The first Virgil Flowers solo book. Awesome. I can see why this is such a popular series. Such a fun character. If you like crime fiction, you’ll love this book.
First of the books by Sandford that is mostly about Virgil. This is Virgil’s case and people keep getting killed. Lots of suspects, from old friends to a new girlfriend, and everyone seems to have a reason to want Bill Judd dead, but what is the connection to the other murders.
Lucas keeps telling Virgil it’s his case, to solve it, but the body count is rising.
I was surprised who the killer turned out to be, thought it was someone else. Actually, suspected at least two other people. Kept me guessing.
Strange characters.
Minus one star for killing animals.
Confusing mishmash. A state law enforcement agent is sent to a small town to investigate a murder. Which turns in to five. Which turns into a DEA raid on a meth lab … well written and interesting in parts, but too graphic in others.
Love all his books!
Same Sandford.
Looking for pure entertainment while isolating? This is my first John Sandford novel, and I picked it up as an audiobook. Now I’m off to download more! Virgil Flowers is a fantastic hero. The three-times divorced cop, who looks like a surfer dude, doesn’t shoot to kill and loves his band tees (I cracked up when a guy from the DEA asked for an explanation of Arcade Fire). Lots of bodies pile up in this twisty-turny thriller with a psycho on the loose. Nice.
I am a fan of all of Sanford’s books
Virgil Flowers is a sexy, talk drink of water. With a lot of witty conversation and twisted plots you will not be disappointed.
Love John Sandford!
Yet another solid Sandford story. One of the best story tellers in the genre.
This was another winner. He doesn’t ever write a bad book. One of my favorite authors. Any thing he writes is worth reading.
