A mindbending, relentlessly surprising thriller from the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy.“Are you happy with your life?” Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious. Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits. Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, … Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”
In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.
Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.
Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

Very interesting story line, a bit convoluted at time, but definitely worth reading!
Interesting concept
I’m not much of a sci fi fan, but this book sucked me in with the love story at its core and the twisty-turny plotline that kept me flipping pages. A super-entertaining deviation from my normal reading fare.
4.5 stars
Blake Crouch does an amazing job of winding you up during the whole story and then knocks you out with a plot twist that’s just…What?!?! But when I got to the ending it just felt…flat. It felt like at the most pivotal moment he ran out of steam. That’s the only reason for four stars. It’s still an epic book and had me crying and laughing in turn. Definitely add to your reading list 🙂
Amazing! Loved how it made you think.
This was a great book. It kept me guessing about what would happen next. I would absolutely recommend this book – especially if you’re into Sci-Fi!
Informative
I am usually able to finish a book no matter how bad it may be. Except this book. It was just dull for me, I guess. I started to read it because of all the great reviews but just not for me
Fascinating subject, intelligently written. This book was constantly making me say, “Whoa, wait a minute” and “Whaaat?!”. I think it’s going to be in my head for a long time.
An experience
Story was a little out of this world. It had a lot of twists and turns. Very much enjoyed reading it.
I loved this book! The concept was original, I love the physics angle, and I loved the characters. A fully-realized world. Very well done.
This was my first book by Blake Crouch, but it won’t be my last.
This thriller hit all the marks for me with action, suspense, and romance, and the science fiction components are woven skillfully in. There were strong themes about discovering the best version of yourself and the power of love in finding your way home.
Bravo author Blake Crouch for blowing me away with this story. This is a Sci-Fi adventure thriller. It kept me on the “edge of my seat” and turning those pages into the wee hours of the morning wanting to see how it all culminated. The authors world-building is unique because throughout the telling of Jason Dessen’s life he has to create a multitude of worlds.
Jason Dessen is a married college physics teacher, with an almost 15-year-old-son; or is he? Delve into a world of what-if’s; where a machine has been created that has infinite possibilities based on choices made or not made by an individual and what the world would be like if those choices were made….
This was such an exciting story to read that I don’t really want to give anything away. I felt like I took this trip with the characters and was always hoping our hero would find a way to make things right.
This is the story of a man named Jason. He is a professor at a second rate college. He has a wife, Daniela, and a teenage son, Charlie. They live happily in Chicago. One night, Jason goes out to get some groceries, and he is attacked. When he wakes up, he is told he has been missing for 14 months. He doesn’t recognize any of the people around him. They tell him he is a world renowned scientist who has discovered – basically – the quantum leap. He doesn’t believe them, and tries to escape. He tries to make his way home, but when he gets there he finds that he is no longer married, and no longer has a son. He sets off to figure out what has happened to him, and how to get back to his wife and child.
This was a great book. I am a Blake Crouch fan – I read his Wayward Pines series – and this book did not disappoint. It is well written, smart, and entertaining. I didn’t want to put it down, and last night I stayed up until 1:30am until I made myself quit reading. It is full of action and plot twists that you don’t see coming. I did find myself gripping the book hard while I read thinking there was no way the character was going to get out of his particular situation.
The ending is a bit of a cliff hanger. Some people would not like that, but me – I hope it means it will lead to a second installation. We shall see.
Read the book. You won’t be disappointed. And then if the movie comes out like planned, we might get to see the characters comes to life.
I wouldn’t have picked this book at all. My husband said it sounded good so I started reading. Even if you aren’t a fan of sci-fi or thrillers do not pass this up! It is an absolutely amazing story that cannot be placed in a specific genre. The story telling is incredible and I honestly couldn’t put it down. Jason’s story is like no other. I would recommend this to anyone.
Read the book and listened to the audio… enjoyed both. This is a spellbinding journey into alternate realities as the hero tries to find his way back to his own world. It’s also a love story and wake up call to those who haven’t figured out their priorities in life.
A page Turner for sure and something I was thinking about afterwards just regarding my own life! What if I had made this choice instead of that one…
Wicked good! Super original!! Clever, smart…satisfying!!!
