“Every story has more than one side, like a crystal that captures and reflects different colors of light. Do not take for granted what you think you know, for until you hold the entire jewel in your palm, the temptation is to fall prey to illusion and deception.” This is a story of the Dark Ones… has lived millennia alone, one of the remaining True Bloods in existence, unconsciously longing for the one male she could never have.
Gabriel: the forbidden human

Wow! Dark Longing is a smoking hot read and I loved every page! Strong story that’s magnificently written with strong characters that you’ll love! I loved Inanna and Gabriel’s story and how it unfolds bringing their past to the present. This was my first book of Aja James and I can’t wait to start the next. I absolutely loved her imaginative mind and the way she writes!
I’m telling you… if you are a fan of paranormal romance, you need to get on the Pure/Dark Ones train!
Dark Longing was primarily about Inanna and Gabriel and it was beautiful! The way the author created their love against the backdrop of history (kudos on creating that history btw) and linked it to the present and gave their growing relationship depth, foundation, and a past… How could I not fall in love with these particular characters?!
The mysterious theme that was introduced in book one was still being explored here and I’m still left guessing about who is behind all the anarchy and mayhem amidst the Dark and Pure communities. Who is the creature? Who else is allied with it? And how will the author keep me on my toes in the next book? I’m so excited to find out!
“Pain is transitory despite its depths. Hate eventually eats itself into a hollow void. Sadness can only last as long as life itself. But love, love extends beyond reason and time.”
Why has it taken me so long to discover this series?? OMG! Luvs it! No time for further review, I’ve already one clicked the next installment! Must read faster!!!!!!!
Loved & highly recommend!
Book two in the Pure/Dark One’s series is an amazing, emotional and scorching read. You will find that this series is not your typical paranormal romance read. You’re going to get drawn into a whole new world. The writing is so smooth and the world that Aja James is creating with this series is so real that you lose yourself in the book. The characters become quite real while you’re reading and you can almost feel each and every emotion.
In this book we get to look inside the Dark One’s lives. We get to see some of the differences between the Dark/Pure One’s. We also get to see some similarities between the two races. Each race lives by a set of rules, rules that can result in death if broken. The two most important rules to each race are basically the same, protect universal balance and maintain secrecy of the race.
Inanna and Gabriel’s destiny was written long ago. When they are thrust together in this book, on a level they recognize each other, but neither know why or how this is. As I read this book, I could only cheer these two on. And Benji? Lordy that’s one sweet little boy! As for Mama Bear, can’t wait to read more about her and find out who/what she really is.
They keep getting better and better
Gabriel D’Angelo’s wife, Olivia, is dying from cancer. His five-year-old son, Benji, is staying with a neighbor while Gabriel spends the evening with Olivia. They married for the sake of Benji. Gabriel feels Benji is his natural son, though his marriage to Olivia has been in name only.
Inanna Sharru-kinu is known by the name Nana Chastain to Olivia and Benji. Inanna has come to collect on Olivia’s blood contract. Inanna is a Dark One — vampire. Her moniker is Angel of Death. She eases the final moments of life into a painless death. Olivia has given half custody of Benji to Inanna. She has also chosen Inanna as Gabriel’s next wife and Benji’s new mother.
Gabriel joins the underground fight club to help pay the hospital bills. He plans for only one night of fighting. The next day Olivia is dead and he’s making arrangements for her funeral. He finds out that Nana Chastain has joint custody of Benji. He has never met her, but he discovers Benji has known Nana for a long time. They meet Nana at the park. Gabriel and Nana have an instant attraction they cannot explain. Nana (Inanna) runs away because of the intense feelings.
The next day Inanna over hears Gabriel being threatened by two Russian thugs. They threaten to harm Benji if Gabriel doesn’t fight in the underground fight club. Gabriel agrees to fight to protect his son. Inanna will do anything to protect Gabriel and Benji. Will Gabriel survive the fight? Can Inanna save them both?
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It is intense and emotionally charged. The main characters are flawed and relatable, but superhuman in their protection and their compassion for each other. Because of a past neither Gabriel or Inanna remembers, their love is instantaneous and passionate. Something the two accept without fault, and the reader as well. The plot is intricate, weaving the subplots skillfully within. There are a few subplots which are left open. These, along with the ending, open the window for the next book. A most excellent read. Highly recommended for fans of J. R. Ward and Christine Feehan.
The author provided me with an electronic copy of her book in exchange for an unbias and honest review.
Dark Longing is the second book in the Pure/Dark Ones series, and this book focuses on the Dark Ones. If you haven’t read the first book before reading this one I highly recommend reading in order because you’ll get introduced to the Pure Ones (which are different from the Dark Ones and are described as Elves in this book).
I loved this book from the beginning to end, especially with the world-building of the Dark Ones. I don’t know how Aja James does it, but her writing style is addicting, and this is only the second book in the series. Once I have some much-needed downtime, I’m going to dive into the third, fourth, and so on in the series, so I can catch up right now though I have some other books that take precedence since they have a deadline to review them.
I loved Inanna and Gabriel in this book because Aja has their past moments together that leads up to their present lives together. There is a lot of story between these two, and I loved the back and forth to the past to present to find out more about these characters and how they were meant to be with each other. It’s not easy for them to be together, though. Some elements and characters are going to try to rip them apart. Gabriel also didn’t know about Inanna until his wife passes away, which was a shocker for him. He had no idea about Inanna. Inanna has always been there since she was close to his wife. Now they are to raise a child together, and Gabriel is going to be thrown into the Dark/Pure Ones world. Gabriel is a fighter though in this story, and I loved how his present-day excursions showed what he did in the past.
There’s a villain or villains in this book and what I love that Aja does is you get a POV of the villain(s). There’s also some unexpected twists and turns in the story, and I was surprised with what happened to the characters. It was one of those moments where I was so shocked that I had a hard time putting down the book because I NEEDED to know what happened next in the story.
The Pure Ones are in this story too, so they don’t get left out, and they play a role in the book. I loved how Aja introduced the Dark Ones world in this book. Okay, I’m going to keep gushing already. If you haven’t read these books yet, then I highly recommend you do, especially if you are PNR and/or Fantasy reader.
If you are a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, then I would recommend checking out this series by Aja James. I can’t wait to dive into the third book in the series. (Now, if only I had more hours in the day and summertime was not fast approaching since my kids will be home and they don’t let me read as much.)
Story Rating: 5 stars

5 “Pure or Dark, What’s Your Pleasure???” Stars!!
BOTH!! I Love that the author has now given us a taste of the Dark Side.
I swear the world building is great! The author has great characters on this side too! The story continuation still flows really well as we head over to The Dark Ones or aka The Vampires. The suspension is far more than I would have suspected when I started this series. I am getting more clues along the way & hope I am onto figuring out who “the Creature” is. There were times when I figured out who was gonna be who, however with all the non-stop action, it didn’t slow the story down at all.
In this series, each book has a HEA just the central storyline continues. Each book is a bit different & has a separate H/H with a story all their own. However it is an interconnected series as the same characters show up in the following books as the series progresses. New characters are added & some can be killed off. Whether they will show up later in the series or not, I have a theory but no proof or verification that yet.
Books 1-3 are currently available.
They are free on Kindle Unlimited!!
No matter what side you are on, I declare this series is Really Good!
I graciously received a free copy for this ARC of this book & would like to thank the author. I voluntarily chose to post a review of my Honest Opinion of this book with No Influence or Interference from any company of person.
Dark Longing is a very well written book by Aja James. I got hooked on this series when reading the third book and am no filling in the gaps by reading the earlier books. Now having finished the second book some gaps are filling in. Do yourself a favor and start with book one! These books can be read individually without a doubt, however there is a thread of a story that goes through them that, that you will only understand if you read them all, and since they are so far all great you will want to read them all anyways, so start at book one 🙂
I was very happy to see that this one focused on Inanna since she made an appearance in book three, and this finally gave me the insight about her story and it felt like I finally got it! This book has a very well developed plot that has some serious twists and turns that pretty much won’t allow you to put the book down! There are some serious nail biter scenes in there as well as some serious hot steamy ones, so be ready for those as well. The pace is perfect and there is not a moment I feel like the author is dragging the story out nor did I ever feel like she was rushing me along! Very important to me and for some authors can’t do that, thankfully this author can.
Inanna is an extremely likable character and is what a strong female character should be. Gabriel is the perfect match and I just can’t believe how good of a man he is. How come these don’t exist in the real world, disregarding the paranormal aspect of things, or do they? I have never met one like him that is for sure!
Well in my eyes this book has it all, lots of paranormal elements, mystery, action and yes a lot of hot steamy romance! So if that is what you are looking for, look no further its all here in this book and this entire series!
Wow! I can’t wait to get into reviewing this book! Aja James has stepped up her pen game to the next level with this new addition to her Dark Saga. In the first book it focused on characters of the Pure Ones. Beings that were reborn pie of heart protectors of the human race. These individuals were human at one time but died tragically only to be given a second chance to help others and fight evil. This installment focused on the Dark Ones. Vampires that were made. Individual recruited to live in the Dark and prey secretly at night relishing blood sex and power. The Dark Ones and Pure Ones were once at war. Neither side liking the other but nevertheless formed a truce. Well time have changed; for both sides have a equal foe now. A being of beauty with a heart of ruin that dares to open the gates to show the world the secret lives of both species.
This is the story of Inana Chastian. Loyal to the Dark Ones Elite Inana is hailed the Angel of death. She uses her gifts to ease the pains of death as human enter into their final days on earth. In passing she comes across a lost soul whom was Pregnant- Olivia. Olivia did not want her child nor her life and Inana reluctantly befriends the young women. In years forward she promises her that if she were to die she would take care of the woman’s child and her husband,Gabriel DeAngelo, that she claimed she had be unfair to.
Olivia becomes sick with cancer and her lost soul is only eased by the fact that Nana has taken care of everything. But Inana has a secret too. She has been drawn to Olivia’s husband for years. A pull she herself never understood and a lust unbridled even though she knew he was not hers … yet. When Olivia dies Olivia gives Inana custody of her child and permission her husband
“Olivia gave me Benji… and you, Gabriel”
Gabriel and Inana’s Journey was a step up from what I thought and it only seems to get better. There are lots of twists and turns and you can see the small glimpses behind why dark/ and Pure were at war. One being that it was tied to Inana’s past. Why she held a secret of whom she was and the future of both beings. I rate this book a 4.5 ***
Let me start off by saying that this is book 2 in a series. I originally read book 1 back in 2012, so to reacquaint myself with this world, I re-read book 1 before starting this. And I’m very glad that I did.
The main story in this book revolves around Gabriel and Inanna (aka Nana Chastain). Inanna is referred to by her kind as the Angel of Death. And this story begins with Gabriel visiting his terminally ill wife which is where Inanna comes into the picture. She made a Blood-Contract with Olivia (Gabriel’s wife) to help her and to end her suffering. But Olivia also asked Inanna to take care of Gabriel and their son, Benji.
Inanna is immediately drawn to Gabriel from the moment she first saw him. The same can be said for Gabriel when he first meets Nana Chastian as well.
Gabriel, in need of money to help take care of his son and pay his wife’s medical bills gets involved in illegal fighting. But we are talking about fighting to the death. Although Gabriel excelled at fighting, Inanna kept an eye on him because of her promise to take care of him, protect him, but also because she cares for him. After his first successful fight, and the fact that he became an Internet sensation (as the fights were live-streamed over the Internet), he was forced into fighting again. Things don’t go so well for him the second time around though!
Now there are other storylines in this book that are connected to Inanna and Gabriel’s story. So it switches from one to another frequently as well as taking you back into Inanna’s past. I particularly enjoyed learning about Inanna’s history, her family and her first love.
When I agreed to read and review Dark Longing I asked the author if the books were standalones or if the stories were connected. She said they can be read as standalones. I’m inclined to disagree. LOL In book 1 you are introduced to many of the secondary characters that appear in book 2. And, in fact, one of the storylines that runs throughout books 1 and 2 revolves around Sophia, the teenage queen of the Pure Ones. She meets Ere in Pure Healing as he’s a teaching assistant in one of her college classes. She’s attracted to him, and although I can’t quite say he feels the same for her, he is a bit obsessed with her. And that mysterious storyline continues in Dark Longing, but only a little bit. The mystery behind who Ere is and what his interest in Sophia is still remains.
Another character that you read about in both books doesn’t even have a name or a specified gender. This character is referred to as it or the creature. It’s featured more in this book than the first though, as if it’s storyline is building from one book to another. Which is basically what is happening with Sophia’s storyline. So yeah, I personally can’t say that the books are standalone. But the main storylines are, for the most part anyway, wrapped up by the end of each book. It’s the subplots that continue from one to another.
So while I did enjoy Dark Longing and I loved the storyline about Gabriel and Inanna, I did find it kind of confusing and a bit difficult to follow along. I think part of the reason for that is, as I already mentioned, one of the characters is more often than not referred to as ‘it’ and, as far as I was aware, was a vampire. But then there is another character that is only, at certain times, referred to as ‘the vampire’, so for awhile there I was thinking they were the same character. You do eventually learn who the vampire is and the reason the author didn’t use their name makes sense. Not referring to the vampire by name, especially when interacting with the creature, added to the intrigue.
One other little thing that I found odd was that in the present time of the story Inanna goes by the name Nana Chastian and in her past she is Inanna. Yet the author more often than not referred to her as Inanna throughout. Which, if I’m being honest, I preferred the name Inanna anyway. 🙂 However, it just felt weird as well. I don’t know, I just felt as if the author should have stuck with Nana in the present and Inanna when referring to her distant past. At least until her past identity becomes known to those in the present.
I am curious to see where the author takes this series. In particular, I’m interested in seeing where Sophia’s story goes.
** Ebook provided by author in exchange for an honest review.**
Quick read, recommended for fans of JR Ward, I will continue with this saga, I’m very intrigued and I wanna know what happens next….
Innana and Gabriel are soul mates, but their love is against the rules, they could loose everything if they surrender to their desires, could their love triumph in the end? or will they crash and burn? Read and find out.
Inanna is a vampire and is known among her kind as the Angel of Death which is how she met Oliva a young woman who is sick and dying. Oliva figures out from the beginning what Inanna is or the gist of it anyways. Olivia and Inanna become fast friends and Olivia asks Inanna if she will take care of her five-year-old son and her husband Gabriel. But of course with Inanna being who she is Olivia’s request does not come without a price that she must pay.
After her death, Benji tells his dad Gabriel that his mom, Olivia wanted Inanna to be his new mother and for all three of them to be a family. Benji wants to go to the park to see Nana so with Gabriel never meeting her before he is all for it. He wants to check out this woman that his wife and son have been such good friends with for so many years and he had no clue.
When Gabriel and Inanna meet they are drawn to each other instantly. Inanna has been attracted to Gabriel for a long time now as she has been watching over Gabriel and Benji as she promised. It doesn’t take them long to figure out they are made for each and they want to spend the rest of their lives together. But this could be a problem for them as Inanna is a vampire, a dark one and Gabriel is human. But Inanna is willing to sacrifice everything to have Gabriel and Benji in her life. Inanna may have to face more than her cove members and her queen when she is challenged by another vampire who wants Gabriel for her own.
I really enjoyed reading Pure Healing the first book in the Pure/ Dark Ones series and getting to know all the characters and then seeing some of them reappear in Dark Longing book two of the Pure/ Dark Ones series. Although I loved reading Pure Healing I did like Dark Longing so much better. I can’t wait to read the next book Dark Desires as Aja James’ writing just seems to get better and better and wanting more and more.
I think I liked Dark Longing better because of Benji I really liked seeing our characters interact with him and besides he is so smart for a five-year-old. I can’t wait to read more about Benji in future books. I also liked how Gabriel and Inanna hit it off so well and who Gabriel was in the past and them being soulmates.
I believe that anyone who loves reading about vampires and a lot of loving in their books then you will love Dark Longing but I do suggest that you read Pure Healing as well so you can get to know some of the characters and their wonderful stories better. Dark Longing is filled with lots of twist and turns, mystery, suspense, vampires and a whole lot of love with a high level of heat.
4 1/2 stars!
I have to say that I liked this book (on the whole) better than the first one! In the first book, we are introduce to the Pure Ones who are positioned as the “Good Guys” in this supernatural realm that Ms. James sucks us into (no pun intended – ha!). The Vampires (commonly referred to as Dark Ones) are the bad guys, then, right? Well, maybe not so much. This book gives us more exposure to the Dark Ones and lets us understand more about their “side” of the story.
Inanna and Gabriel are the MCs in this one, and they are definitely combustible when it comes to their chemistry. Inanna is thought to be the oldest living Dark One (but, yes, there are some twists that come about as we discover more about her back story). Gabriel is a human with a pure soul who is dragged into the darker aspects of this realm (of which he was previously ignorant) out of necessity and the need to care for his young son.
I loved their story, but I did get a little confused with the number of characters being introduced, so the “who’s who” section of the book that the author included helped me sort things out when I started to get cross-eyed trying to remember each individual’s role/special abilities/etc.
All in all, I really enjoyed the book once it got rolling and into the meat of the story, and I am definitely planning to read on!
Wow. Amazing writing, world-building, character-building, everything! There were so many fun little moments where I thought “ooooooh I knew it!” or “wow! I did NOT see that coming!” It’s amazing how certain storylines are coming together even as more seeds are planted for future conflict and shockers. I read the last 73% or so at work on my computer today because I just could not stop. So now I have to wait for my buddies to catch up so we can read #3 together haha. Loved this book!
This is a fantastic follow up to the Pure Ones i literally couldn’t put it down until i’d finished it . While in the first book of this series we are led to believe it was simply good versus evil we now find out that there is a grey area in between . This book focuses on Inanna , who was raised by her father, having never known her mother , believing she is a pure one until she becomes a teenager . Fast forward to present time & Inanna is one of the Queens of dark ones inner circle , she makes deals with the dying in exchange for giving them a peaceful passing & that is how she meets Gabrial ,his wife is dying of cancer & Inanna does a deal to end her suffering but also to look after her son & husband . This is a story of tragedy & romance , past & present lives , a mysterious adversary who is playing people like a puppet master & into the mix we have the Queen of pure ones being asked to make a choice between the strange Ere & Dalair . Aja James is brilliant at keeping you wondering & questioning with all the plots & subplots , bring on the next one

Thoughts: Having read book 1 years ago and enjoying the world I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to read book 2. It was worth the wait! I couldn’t stop reading the words or turning the pages. And talk about HOT! Whew, I’m still fanning myself. But what really grabbed me were the characters and the world. This has suspense, mystery, and action so if you want more than just romance then this is a must read. And it’s not predictable other than the HEA of course, which is what kept me glued to the pages. I had no clue who the traitor was, and I still only have theories about other mysteries but no idea where they might lead. I think those are the best stories, and throw in that HEA and it’s perfect. I look forward to reading the next book!!
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work and chose to write a review.
What a fascinating world. I admit that the story can get confusing at times- there are so many, SO many story lines and I feel like you just have to read in order to gain a deeper understanding into this world. I actually kicked off my love of Aja James’ stories after receiving an early copy of the first book in her spin off series, Dragon Tails, (Dream of Dragons). That book was astonishingly good. So I had to start from the beginning. I’m so happy that the series is complete because I don’t want to wait for the next book in the series!
While the first book of the series featured the Pure Ones more fully, this one features the Dark Ones. So, the one thing I said about the first book and this book is that there is a chance of confusion because the series feels like it started a few books too late. That said, the books are slowly revealing the full story and it’s a fantastic ride, almost like peeling an onion to try to figure out what is really happening.
In this book, Inanna and Gabriel need to find their HEA but there are many obstacles in their way, not to mention casualties, as often seen in war. We learn a lot about the dictates of the Dark Ones, their rules and their prophesies and I love how the Dark and Pure ones are working together against a common enemy. I adored Inanna and Gabriel (and Benji, Gabriel’s son); my heart broke with them when they faced loss and soared when they found victory. I loved checking in on the other possible couples and the rest of the supporting cast is so fascinating, some bad, some good and some that have both light and dark, which makes for an extremely fascinating world. I find this to be a very original story and I love the Asian aspects of the story as well. On to the next story in the series!
WOW! and OMG! were two of the expressions i constantly had on my mind while reading “Dark Longing” which is the second instalment in the “Pure/Dark Ones”-series.Aja James have created a world of danger and darkness, sensuality and intrigue. Its both magical and terrifying following the story of Inanna,Angel of Death and her reincarnated lover Gabriel D’Angelo.Aja James opens up a plot i have never done before and i loved every second of it!Before i even knew it i finished this book after only a couple of hours. It was exhilarating,heart-wrenching and sexy!!!
Inanna Angel of Death is a Dark One who is a born vampire (well its easier for me to think of her as a “good” vampire) and is also among the Chosen safeguards for the Queen of the Dark Ones. She is said to even be older than the Queen herself and for that reason i could sense how ancient and powerful Inanna is.I thought her connection to Olivia very strange at first, but i later came to realize that it was all done by fate, for her to finally meet and fall in love with Gabriel. The moments from her past with Gabriel made me cry rivers.I so badly love it when a soulmate reincarnates for his beloved to come back to her.It makes it more epic and bittersweet!I really came to love Inanna as a heroine, she was very determined, brave and badass and her heart so golden that i find it no wonder that even little Benji was smitten with her.
THERE GOTTA BE more talk about the hero Gabriel D’Angelo.Just come the FREAKING ON how i came to love this gorgeous angel of a man!He was so steadfast, selfless, strong, courageous and so beautiful that i wanted him for myself! He is also a virgin!!!!CAN HE BE SEXIER THAN THAT!!!NOOO because he was absolutely perfect in my opinion!I love how he took in the news of the secret world he never knew existed and him turning into a Dark One and bonding with Inanna.Inanna did change his whole world and entire existence and i love watching him open his heart to her and him accepting hers.It was like watching old lonely souls who have searched for each other finally coming together after millions of years. It was a volcanic explosion that was mean to be and damn it all but their chemistry was off the page burning so badly it got hot in my room!Gabriel and Inanna are meant to be,and thank you Aja James for creating the perfect couple in these two.Gosh how my romantic heart nearly burst in two pieces for them!
It was fun meeting the Pure Ones again, especially Sophia,Cloud and Aella. That one scene with Sophia and Dalair made my heart stop!I AM SO DYING FOR THESE TWO!Then we have got Seth and Queen Jade!I mean DAMN these two are so hot for each other that i have seriously been considering to read their book “Pure Ecstasy” first but then i changed my mind cuz it would be best to read every book in order from here on.Both Seth and Jade are calling to my soul!!!Then we have the mysterious Creature i am staring to get more intrigued by.In the former book he had been a bother to me,but in this one it was like a part of his soul got opened.I am strangely and very much intrigued by him,and i can`t wait to know more!
(My review can also be found in Goodreads)
WOW!!!
This is outstanding it didn’t matter whether you are reading about Inanna’s past, her history her present, or where her possible future lies this vampire challenges everything I have ever understood about the how’s and why’s of vampires lives and what they encompass.
I was amazed at the depth and pace found throughout the life of this challenging yet ancient female vampire, who seems to understand the suffering felt by others while trying to assist in a way that helps others, herself and her duty during the millennia she has lived.
The authors ability to take the reader’s back into Inanna’s past to give us a complete understanding and view of why Gabrielle is the central to so much that has occurred within her life.
Though the complex weaving of so many different characters the action and mysteries surrounding this world and its culture, gives us an opportunity to understand how superbly the fates have organised the mind boggling outcome of a number of the fascinating characters and the domino effect their actions take with the results of the three main worlds we get to know at great depth as they battle against each other trying to keep a balance within their power structure.
Gabrielle and Inanna work within the restrictions and laws they are bound by as they try to deal with the continued attempts at either killing them or keeping them apart.
An incredibly complex structure of events, combined with an intense and deeply emotional romance, gives us an appreciation of how deeply those who are bound to each other through love and their spirit can come together and have an effect on each other and the world as they know it without realising what is happening.
A storyline that will tempt and tease you the further you are drawn into this world of vampires, dark ones and pure ones while living alongside those who are totally unaware of their existence. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the world of the supernatural and the paranormal.
