It happens whenever wolf shifter Roni Axton is near Marcus Fuller: a crackle of sexual awareness that’s intoxicating…and deeply annoying. Marcus is a pack enforcer who oozes power, but Roni is lethal in her own right—nothing like the flirty females who flock around him. Even still, his possessive gaze makes one thing clear. Marcus has singled her out for seduction, and he wants to make her sit up … up and beg.
No matter how aloof and unfazed Roni acts, Marcus can tell she wants him. When a brutal attack by a jackal pack forces them to work together, it’s the perfect opportunity for Marcus to chip away at her defenses—until he falls into his own trap, completely unprepared for the intensity of their connection. Roni is the only one who’s ever seen past his shifter charm and discovered the man hiding beneath it. And for Marcus, claiming Roni once will mean needing her forever.

Cat & Mouse… or wolf &… wolf, rather
I wasn’t a big fan of Marcus’ at the start of this book. I didn’t like that it felt like he was playing a cat-and-mouse game with Roni. Not that she can’t handle herself, or him, because she can. Of course, as he realized he was the one that got caught in the trap, I liked him a lot more.
This series reminds me of the shifter romances that made the paranormal romance genre popular. It’s often overused now, but this one and the previous books in the series have brought back my enjoyment of predestined shifter mates, psychic bonds, and bite marks.
And I truly appreciate that the heroine isn’t a bitch, as many authors tend to mistake bitchiness with ‘strong’. The females also aren’t purposefully demanding to go into dangerous situations when they aren’t physically strong OR trained. That drives me crazy.
This series has female leads that have intelligence, TRUE mental strength, smart-ass comments, and females that can fight. More importantly, the characters are likable.

This is the 4th book in the Phoenix Pack series. I don’t consider these stand alone as each book builds off events from previous books. I’ve listened to this series so many time and this one of my favorites of all of them.
Roni & Marcus are so much fun as a couple. She’s quirky and even before they decide to be mates – he totally gets her and accepts her as she is. There’s several little enjoyable subplots that come together really well at the end. This also continues to meld the Phoenix & Mercury packs together so that we get updates on previous couples as well as get to know future MCs better.
Jill Redfield continues to be amazing. This is a HUGE cast of characters, male and female, young and old and she gives them all unique voices and characteristics that stay consistent throughout the series.
Note: This series is intertwined with Wright’s Mercury Pack series. For chronological order of events, read/listen to Spiral of Need (Mercury Pack book 1) next.
Love this series. Great characters who continuously appear. Hot sexy times and laughter.
Dark Instinctis one of my favorite in the series. There is good character building at the same time, the suspense, action and romance makes it a great read.
Marcus and Roni come across as a little childish here but that’s one of the reason I love them.. Especially their quirks and banter.
It’s also great to read about previous characters and how their lives are progressing. I love love Kye here, a little alpha in the making . I also love Eli and Roni’s pranks it was hilarious and how Roni made Greta like her, very devious .
Again it was great read and I truly enjoyed it
‘Dark instincts’ is another ‘YES!!’ for me. I’m enjoying this series so much! It has the perfect balance between fun, hot, emotional, sassy, dominant and action. And the fact that they can shift into an animal (wolf in this case) is an extra plus!
What I really enjoyed in this book is the fact that Marcus is an enforcer for the Phoenix pack and Roni is also an enforcer but she is part of the Mercury pack. That means that both packs are really present in this book and I enjoyed that very much. It was such fun to see the members of both packs interact with each other. How they tease each other but also how they have each other backs. I love that!
Although both Roni and Marcus (and their wolves) are dominant, that doesn’t mean that they are always fighting for dominance. No! But Roni does have her own special way to let people now that she isn’t happy about something and I love that side of her. And although Marcus can be very dominant (especially in the bedroom) he does respect Roni’s boundaries and her dominant side. But that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t find other ways to ‘tame’ her and I love that too.
The story is told from both POV’s. I would suggest that you start this series from the beginning, because then you will have more fun with the background comments of everyone.
My favorite in the series!
In this next book we have Marcus and Roni, Marcus an Enforcer for the Phoenix pack and Roni, sister to Nick the alpha of the Mercury pack and Roni an Enforcer. Another great story filled with past guilt about situations they had no control over. Both are blocking the mating instincts based on their past histories. I have to say that I am getting a little tired of the same theme running thru most of the books of the shifters, either blocking or not recognizing their mates and all the angst that leads up to them finally realizing it. Other than that, I love the sarcasm, the witty repertoire between all the past, present and future characters, the action and the love that builds between Marcus and Roni. For two dominant enforcers they were able to make their relationship work. 4 stars!
Great Series
