Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in Dark in Death, by J.D. Robb, the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense, and takes on a case of death imitating art… It was a stab in the dark. On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylan’s neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times … the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanel’s best friend, who had just slipped out of the theater for a moment to take a call, it felt as unreal as the ancient black-and-white movie up on the screen. But Chanel’s blood ran red, and her death was anything but fictional.
Then, as Eve Dallas puzzles over a homicide that seems carefully planned and yet oddly personal, she receives a tip from an unexpected source: an author of police thrillers who recognizes the crime–from the pages of her own book. Dallas doesn’t think it’s coincidence, since a recent strangulation of a sex worker resembles a scene from her writing as well. Cops look for patterns of behavior: similar weapons, similar MOs. But this killer seems to find inspiration in someone else’s imagination, and if the theory holds, this may be only the second of a long-running series.
The good news is that Eve and her billionaire husband Roarke have an excuse to curl up in front of the fireplace with their cat, Galahad, reading mystery stories for research. The bad news is that time is running out before the next victim plays an unwitting role in a murderer’s deranged private drama–and only Eve can put a stop to a creative impulse gone horribly, destructively wrong.
From the author of Echoes in Death, this is the latest of the edgy, phenomenally popular police procedurals that Publishers Weekly calls “inventive, entertaining, and clever.”

Eve and Roarke are the BEST! I have every book in this series! No one beats Eve and Roarke! Great stories, lots of suspense! Lots of romance!
Not her best Robb.
I read all of J. D. Robb and Nora Roberts’ books. They never disappoint.
I love these characters and am never disappointed. But always sad when the book ends and I have to wait for the next installment!
If you like J. D. Robb and Lieutenant Eve Dallas you won’t be disappointed.
Really enjoy this author. Theirs always some unique plot twist of how or why a murder has been committed. It’s interesting learning about the possible future and what life may be like. Love the relationship between Eve and Roarke.
I have read all the books in this series. Loved the puppy giving Eve a kiss and Gallahad’s reaction later. REALLY Nice followup on that.
Unlike other mysteries where you can guess who the murderer is , this one takes you through the book developing the culprit till they are caught.
Note that I only read J.D. Robb books not the others.
This series is one of my go-to favorites. Didn’t disappoint.
Got hooked after the first in the series and now I own them all!
Perfect Nora Roberts!!!!!!!!
Another great book in the Eve Dallas Series from JD Robb, can’t wait for the next
having read every one of Nora Roberts/JD Robb books and never been disappointed in any of them, she doesn’t miss
Best author of futuristic detective solving with humor on the sidelines of personal life with RICH hubby
The In Death series by JD Robb us an excellent must read series.
I love all the in Death books.
As usual the In Death series continues to do what good reads do- takes the reader on a trip to another world for an escape from this reality.
It is fast paced, and I like the way she uses humor to tell the story.
Once again Nora (JD Robb) comes thru w/ a good Eve & Roark yarn.
I enjoy all of JD Robb’s books.
There is not much left that I can say about Eve Dallas and In Death that I haven’t already said in the multitude of reviews that I have done for this series. It continues to be one of my favorite series, and one that I hope stays around for years to come.
The premise of this installment concerns a rash of murders being carried out across the city that closely mimic the plot lines by a popular writer of police procedurals. I liked this story line as it felt like we were reading a story within a story, and books that somewhat mirrored Eve’s own life and career. As always, the suspense plot was written very well and kept my attention throughout the duration of the audiobook. I was not able to guess the villain’s identity in this installment, and I always love when a book stumps me until the near end.
Dark in Death was a bit light on the secondary characters that we know and love, other than Peabody and Roarke. Even Somerset was missing from this installment, but that gave Eve and Roarke some much-needed alone time. And ooh boy – did they take advantage of having the house to themselves. I love seeing the fun, flirty and steamy sides of their characters. Plus – Roarke could be in every scene and I would not ever get tired of him.
Susan Ericksen continues to be a fabulous narrator for this series. She embodies Eve’s character to the extent that I have a hard time separating the two when I hear this narrator performing another story. She also does an exception Irish lilt for Roarke that is just all kinds of yummy. I have gotten to the point that I stick to this series solely in audio and save the story for a long road trip as I know it will keep me entertained.
I highly recommend this series to fans of police procedurals, mystery-detective stories, and futuristic fiction.
