Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in Dark in Death, by J.D. Robb, the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense, and takes on a case of death imitating art… It was a stab in the dark. On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylan’s neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times … the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanel’s best friend, who had just slipped out of the theater for a moment to take a call, it felt as unreal as the ancient black-and-white movie up on the screen. But Chanel’s blood ran red, and her death was anything but fictional.
Then, as Eve Dallas puzzles over a homicide that seems carefully planned and yet oddly personal, she receives a tip from an unexpected source: an author of police thrillers who recognizes the crime–from the pages of her own book. Dallas doesn’t think it’s coincidence, since a recent strangulation of a sex worker resembles a scene from her writing as well. Cops look for patterns of behavior: similar weapons, similar MOs. But this killer seems to find inspiration in someone else’s imagination, and if the theory holds, this may be only the second of a long-running series.
The good news is that Eve and her billionaire husband Roarke have an excuse to curl up in front of the fireplace with their cat, Galahad, reading mystery stories for research. The bad news is that time is running out before the next victim plays an unwitting role in a murderer’s deranged private drama–and only Eve can put a stop to a creative impulse gone horribly, destructively wrong.
From the author of Echoes in Death, this is the latest of the edgy, phenomenally popular police procedurals that Publishers Weekly calls “inventive, entertaining, and clever.”

I can’t believe we’re at the forty-sixth book in the series and it hasn’t begun to be repetitive or stale. Each new book is as interesting and exciting as all those that came before it! As each new release approaches, I promise myself I’ll read it in stages and savor each section – but – when the release occurs – I devour it – in one sitting. I’m so ashamed ….
I always purchase these books with the Whispersync option because I absolutely LOVE Susan Eriksen as the narrator. Her range is phenomenal and she makes you believe whatever emotion she’s conveying. It is worth listening just to hear her say “Darlin’ Eve” as Roarke. Goodness, she does them well!
Each mystery is new and interesting. They are well plotted and excellently written. The suspense builds and builds until the final climactic moment when the killer is caught. Eve Dallas is a no-nonsense cop who always ‘Stands for the Dead’. When someone is murdered, no matter how despicable they are, they belong to Eve and she will stand for them and find their murderer.
Then, there is Roarke. He’s a reformed thief, a gazillionaire and Eve’s husband. Then, you add drop-dead gorgeous with a lilting Irish accent and you definitely have a drool factor. I just love how much Eve and Roarke love each other and I am so happy I’ve gotten to watch that love grow and mature since the first book.
Someone is killing people in New York in New York City. This time, they are following the murders in a set of police procedural novels – but – they are slightly re-writing them. The changes are small and subtle, but they are different none-the-less. The murderer is changing the mistakes that the book murderer made that allowed him/her to be caught. Can Eve catch them before they go through the entire series and begin writing their own plots? It will take Eve, Roarke, Peabody, McNab and the rest of the crew to figure it out and solve the crime(s).
If you want a want a wonderful series to read, this one should be at the top of your list! It is filled with humor – Eve can really butcher some of those ‘old sayings’ we all hear every day. You’ll be intrigued by all of the gadgets and lifestyles in the book – there are some really cool things there – like an AutoChef that you program for the meals you want.

The in death series is one of my absolute favorites. Eve is interestingly different from most main characters and her surrounding characters add plenty to the books. I would strongly suggest starting at the beginning, which is Naked in Death.
#46 wow and I’m still so invested in this series. I kept thinking who is this murderer and how do they fit into this story. The author could easily have been writing about herself.
There was a lot going on and I enjoyed watching Eve unravel the mess and working out the finer details. Great story, kept me glued to my book and I couldn’t put it down.
You can’t miss with a J D Robb book. To really enjoy her books You really have to start with the very 1st One For those who don’t know J D Robb is really Nora Roberts.
The JD Robb “In Death” series are futuristic police procedurals with romance and humor. The characters are wonderful, romantic, funny, and — when they need to be — deadly serious and professional. Fans of Nora Roberts (who writes this series under the JD Robb pen name) are sometimes surprised by the amount of violence and cursing in this series, but they won’t be surprised at the steamy love scenes. In this book, there are in-jokes and behind-the-scenes publishing information since one of the characters is an author. The things she goes through with a stalker fan sound like something Nora may have expeirenced herself before — at least the angry letters and unsolicited manuscripts from would-be writers. If you haven’t read this series, I recommend starting with the first book, Naked in Death, and enjoying the way the characters grow and fall in love. I especially enjoy the audiobooks of this series and the narrator, who gives voice to the characters.
Yet another great entry in the peerless (and hopefully never-ending) In Death series. If you haven’t read any of these, all I can say is gird your loins, ignore the cries of your bank account, and buy every one of them, starting with Naked in Death. You have such a treat ahead of you.
I read that book in two day could hardly put it down already have the other one on order
I was disappointed with this book. I have always read her in death series in one sitting. Until this one. I have re-read her series and decided it is her attitude. She doesn’t get invested in the deaths. She also has very little interaction with her support group. The fun was missing.
Eve get a case where the victim is killed in a movie theater watching the classic Psycho. An author comes to her with Nadine say the death scene is close to a scene in a book series she wrote. Eve learns there was a previous murder of a LC that matches the first book. They look or the killer. Roarke has the book series in his library so they read them to help find the murderer and the next victim. Eve used her police and intuition skills and employs the skills of those around her including Roarke to help her find the killer. As usual she is unimpressed by celebrities and the rich and just sees them as people who need her help so they can stay alive, give them closure on the death of a family member or friend or can help her capture the killer.
I’ve read all the books in this series, believe this is number 46. The characters seem like old friends. I do wish that there was a little more conflict between the two lead characters that are married. They seemed to have settled in, which is nice, but the conflict as they got together and learned about each other was good.
I have read all of the in death series and have enjoyed them all. I love how Dallas
takes up the victim as her own to seek justice for them even if she doesn’t like them in some of the books. Great characters in the series whom I have enjoyed getting to know in each book.
I’m a huge fan of Eve and Roarke. This book is just ‘mag’ with a lot of twists and turns. Almost all of the gang features in this novel and that’s one of my favourite things, to catch up with them all. Can’t wait to read the next one.
one of our favorite authors. both mu husband and i like dallas and roarke and the gang. the writing is quite readable. the situations concern me. actually jd robb causes me to buy the book ’cause i know it’ll be good
Love all her books
Eve searches for a murderer who copies the modes of death as conveyed by an author of murder mysteries. The author recalls the individual she seeks as an aspiring author who sent her book to her…The lack of clues and no knowledge of who the next victim will be lead to many directional searches which pick up bits and pieces…
If you read J.D. Robb you will be turning pages to reach the conclusion to “Dark”.
Have read all of her ” in Death” books. Romantic and action packed, thriller.
Great characters .They are well developed.Really enjoy Dallas’s & Roarke’s relationship, as well as the secondary characters.
Story fast paced & unpredictable.
4.5/5
I am always amazed that Robb can keep churning out original, inventive murder cases for Eve to solve…but she does.
This one centers around a disturbed woman who confuses fiction from reality and decides to “rewrite” a popular murder series featuring the killers as heroes…disturbed indeed.
I did miss a few of her regular supporting cast members in this one, but all-in-all another satisfying addition to the series!! It’s always nice to visit with this family of characters.
Excellent plot where the killer takes on the role of killers in a book series. It’s a fun read. Very much enjoyed the twist and turns. I would recommend this book.
Love ve the future setting of the books. Also the strong woman Dallas is and the great supporting characters.
