An amazingly addictive new series. –Fresh FictionI’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me–again.Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry … who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects–and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me? It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me–and I’m in for the fight of my life.

I thought Dark Frost was a great addition to the overall series. I am loving how much magical and mythical elements the story has. I am well versed on the back story of Loki and his chaos so to see an author weave that through a modern day story is fascinating to me. In Dark Frost I feel like Gwen is maturing and learning to stand on her own two feet. She still needs a lot of help fighting reapers, but thankfully she has a wonderful group of friends that keeps growing with every story. The romance between Gwen and Logan is also well done. We get just a touch of their slow burning romance, but with the seriousness of Gwen’s missions for Nike I think it strikes the right balance. Each books gets a little darker and more intense, which I love!
Loved that the action started in the first chapter and kept going, almost non-stop. Several surprises were in store for Gwen in this book along with character growth, a heartbreaking meltdown, conflict between friends, a fuzzy new arrival to the group, and a grandma with a sword. Though all the books have trials and life and death situations for Gwen, I think this one was the heaviest so far.
Gwen is challenged on many levels – her friends, relationship, her obligation as Nike’s champion, her job, her family, her enemies, and most of all by her own powers. There’s also a big shock or two thrown in. She has come so far in her short time at the academy and though she still has a lot of whiny, stereotypical moments, she has grown more confident in using her powers and she’s understanding more, and finding more answers. Along with Gwen’s challenges, Daphne and Logan also have to face some struggles of their own and they both lash out at her as a result, causing conflict in her circle of friends. She ends up more on her own, making rash decisions and mistakes that take a deadly turn for her and causes greater danger for everyone in the end. There’s a lot to sort through but, aside from her breakdown, in the end they come together ready to face their next challenge together.
This one seems a bit more serious due to situations in the story and the depth of their feelings and conflicting emotions. There’s a lot teenage angst and drama and emotional turmoil – especially related to Gwen and Logan. There push/pull-longing relationship takes several hits, but hopefully in the end it will make them stronger; ready to face what is yet to come for them all.
I would really rate this audiobook at a 4.5. I really liked it. I didn’t give it a 5.0 because I felt it got a bit repetitive a few too many times. However, the narration is well done. The worldbuilding and storyline engaging and the characters well flushed.
They are times that Gwen or one of her schoolmates are a bit immature or filled with self-doubt and pull the “woe is me” stuff and I want to tell them to grow up. Then I remind myself that they are teenagers and that’s what they are doing, or trying to do. Grow up while being expected to deal with very adult stuff. So in this regard, I’d have to say the author is spot on. Lots of action, some awe shucks moments, and a tear-jerker or two.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good YA paranormal or YA urban fantasy.
Aside from the very frequent “my gypsy gifts”, this is a great book. Personally I figured out who the Reaper Girl was before the main character as well as the Reaper in the Protectorate. Maybe that’s just me though since I read a lot of these books and rarely get surprised my these twists. The plot is fantastic a gripping. I read the first 4 books and 2 novellas in one night because I couldn’t stop. The romance between Logan and Gwen is kinda lacking and leaves us wanting sooo much more.
