Welcome to Whimsical Wednesday my Wonderful Wordish Wyverns! Tonight’s Gem is quite wonderful..it shimmers and changes colors like a stage spotlight. It hovers and changes and glows. It gives One courage just holding it for a bit. This is “Dare to be Seen” by Gem Maker Elisa Di Napoli.
This book is of the self-help variety and yet, does not make One feel that One is on One’s own completely. Ms. Di Napoli is a licensed therapist AND a singer and musician. She understands the stage fright and performance anxiety issues she speaks of. Do you or someone you know and love long for a career on the stage or where getting up in front of others is part of the pathway to success and just this alone is holding you or them back? Does the thought of stepping in front of an audience make you want to turn tale and run into the night, never to be seen again? At the mere mention of the words ‘stage’ or ‘microphone’ do your scales quake and quiver like jello at the King’s banquet? If so, this may be just the book the doctor ordered!
“Dare to be Seen” is split into four parts with Part I explaining the underpinnings of Parts II, III, and IV. If you are not a student of psychology, you may need to do a bit of research to get through the introduction and first chapter to understand the names and phrases discussed. Do not let this intimidate you. Part I also explains what hypnosis is, how it works and how it can benefit people.
Part I also takes on reducing anxiety, letting go of worry and catastrophic thinking and best of all – how to be more confident while performing. Your humble Book Dragon did quite a bit of performing in my younger years and I loved it, but the confidence building took some time as my dear Ma Ma used to say I sounded “like a dinosaur caught in the tar pits” while practicing.
Part II covers fear and calming oneself when fearful. Part III is letting go of the past (something we could all use at times). Part IV is dealing with negative thoughts and dealing with self-consciousness. There is even a section dealing with past trauma.
Ms. Di Napoli also includes hypnotherapy sessions and explains how to download them, and use them on One’s own. She does explain this is NOT magic. It is not going to fix all your ills. I would suggest here that if you are already seeing a therapist or counselor for other issues that you let them know you are going to read and try the exercises in this book. It is not always wise to mix therapies.
This is a neat little book and I really enjoyed it. If you have a loved on who you know is having stage fright or performance anxiety (dear Uncle Fred keeps bringing up that he missed another promotion because he just can’t speak in front of crowds, etc) then this would make a lovely gift this year..and who knows? If old Freddie gets that promotion, you might get a nice gift of your own next year!
Until tomorrow I remain, your humble Book Dragon, Drakon T. Longwitten
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
